The fish genera Gasterosteus, Hucho, Oxynoemacheilus, Salmo, and Schizothorax are examples of these groups among vertebrates, and the genera Magnibursatus (Trematoda), Margaritifera, Potomida, Microcondylaea, Leguminaia, Unio (Mollusca), and Phagocata (Planaria), among invertebrates. There is reason to believe that their ancestors spread to Europe through the Paratethys (or the proto-Paratethys basin that preceded it), where intense speciation took place and new genera of aquatic organisms arose. Ports and Logistics Scoping Study in CAREC Countries CAREC countries rely upon open-sea ports of third-party countries outside of their borders as conduits for their exports and imports. These open-sea ports are located mostly in non-CAREC countries and act as international oceanic trade nodes to connect CAREC freight moving on cross border railways, highways, inland sea shipping, and on river and canal barges. This Scoping Study analyses seaports and multimodal corridors serving CAREC landlocked countries. The purpose is to provide sufficient background to ports and logistics developments in the region and identify areas and potential activities that will require cooperation among CAREC countries and development partners within the framework of the CAREC Program. About the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Program The Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program is a partnership of 11 member countries and development partners working together to promote development through cooperation, leading to accelerated economic growth and poverty reduction. It is guided by the overarching vision of “Good Neighbors, Good Partners, and Good Prospects.” CAREC countries include Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, the People’s Republic of China, Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Niger Is a Landlocked Country in Western Africa
Niger is a landlocked country in Western Africa. Niger (pronounced knee-ZHARE) is a landlocked country in central Africa that borders seven other countries. Being landlocked has made it difficult for Niger to develop its econ- omy; it doesn’t have any seaports that can be used for shipping or receiving supplies. In ad- dition, more than 80 percent of Niger’s land area is located in the Sahara, the world’s largest hot-weather desert. And every year, the Sahara grows several miles larger, eating more and more of Niger’s land. The country’s only real farmland is very overcrowded. This area is located in the southwest- ern part of the country, fed by the Niger River, the largest river in West Africa. The water in this river is not just for irrigation. It is also used for drinking and cooking water, for laun- dry, and for baths. Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world. Most people in Niger are very poor and live on the little food they grow themselves. In 2005 and 2006, Niger suffered a severe food shortage and had to get aid from the United Nations. Today, the food crisis is not as severe, but the country still relies on international aid for survival. The mineral uranium makes up most of Niger’s exports. Uranium is the key mineral in nuclear power and nuclear weapons. This has helped the country’s economy, although ura- nium prices have gone down in recent years. And Niger’s two uranium mines are owned by French companies. -
