denkraum für die jugendarbeit ZEIT geben in der Jugendarbeit! MUSS Arbeit so viel fordern? SEIN oder nicht SEIN - Leben im Flüchtlingslager Powered by September 2014 Nummer 03/14 • P.b.b. 02Z031486M • Oesterreichischer Alpenverein, Olympiastr. 37, 6020 Innsbruck Editorial 3 Cover Parken – Stehenbleiben, Zeit nehmen … • Genre Bending Narrative, VALHALLA Tells the Tale of One Man’S Search for Satisfaction, Understanding, and Love in Some of the Deepest Snows on Earth
62 Years The last time Ken Brower traveled down the Yampa River in Northwest Colorado was with his father, David Brower, in 1952. This was the year his father became the first executive director of the Sierra Club and joined the fight against a pair of proposed dams on the Green River in Northwest Colorado. The dams would have flooded the canyons of the Green and its tributary, Yampa, inundating the heart of Dinosaur National Monument. With a conservation campaign that included a book, magazine articles, a film, a traveling slideshow, grassroots organizing, river trips and lobbying, David Brower and the Sierra Club ultimately won the fight ushering in a period many consider the dawn of modern environmentalism. 62 years later, Ken revisited the Yampa & Green Rivers to reflect on his father's work, their 1952 river trip, and how we will confront the looming water crisis in the American West. 9 Minutes. Filmmaker: Logan Bockrath 2010 Brower Youth Awards Six beautiful films highlight the activism of The Earth Island Institute’s 2011 Brower Youth Award winners, today’s most visionary and strategic young environmentalists. Meet Girl Scouts Rhiannon Tomtishen and Madison Vorva, 15 and 16, who are winning their fight to green Girl Scout cookies; Victor Davila, 17, who is teaching environmental education through skateboarding; Alex Epstein and Tania Pulido, 20 and 21, who bring urban communities together through gardening; Junior Walk, 21 who is challenging the coal industry in his own community, and Kyle Thiermann, 21, whose surf videos have created millions of dollars in environmentally responsible investments.

  • Annual Mountaineering Summary: 2013
Annual Mountaineering Summary: 2013 Celebrating a Century of Mountaineering on Denali Greetings from the recently re-named Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station. With the September 2013 passage of the "Denali National Park Improvement Act", S. 157, a multi-faceted piece of legislation sponsored by Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, Denali's mountaineering contact station is now designated the Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station, honoring the achievements of Athabaskan native who was the first to set foot on the summit of Denali on June 7, 1913. Harper, a 20-year-old guide, dog musher, trapper/hunter raised in the Koyukuk region of Alaska, was an instrumen-tal member of the first ascent team which also included Hudson Stuck, Harry Karstens, and Robert Tatum. Tragically, Harper died in 1918 along with his bride during a honeymoon voyage to Seattle; their steamer SS Princess Sophia struck a reef and sank off the coast of Juneau in dangerous seas, killing all 343 passengers and crew. A century after his history-making achievement, Harper is immortalized in Denali National Park by the Harper Glacier that bears his name, and now at the park building that all mountaineers must visit before embarking on their Denali expeditions. The ranger station's new sign was installed in December 2013, and a small celebration is planned for spring 2014 to recognize the new designation. Stay tuned ... - South District Ranger John Leonard 2013 Quick Facts Denali recorded its most individual summits (783) in any one season. The summit success rate of 68% is the highest percentage since 1977. • US residents accounted for 60% of climbers (693).

  • Further Cutting-Edge Routes (Part II) 1990-2000
A publication of the South Australian Volume 4, Issue 15 Climbing Club (CCSA)... February 2006 BOLFA Special points of inter- est: Further cutting-edge routes (Part II) • Cutting edge routes 1990-2000 1990-2000 So by the end of 1990, the world had its first route graded 8c+ (34), courtesy of a 25 • Joke of the month foot offering in the UK. It was big news, for it was an unprecedented grade – and a route that would stand the test of time and see only 4 repeats in the next 14 years. Nev- • Gallery ertheless, it wasn’t long before another climb came to challenge it in the difficulty • The Last Word stakes – and this time it was Germany’s turn. 1991 Aktion Direkt (originally UIAA XI) (or 34/35 for us Aussies) was the product of Wolf- gang Gullich in 1991. The line had been a project of local Milan Sykora – though his vision was of a slightly different path up the same radically overhanging bulge. Gullich set to work on the project but chose instead to take a direct finish straight through the business. To do this, he specifically trained 1-finger pockets, but more importantly started a campus boarding regime that up until then, was unheard of. To train for the route, Gullich (amongst other exercises) trained plyometrics – specifi- cally on one-finger first joint edges. This involved dropping down and catching his weight using one-finger of each hand – then springing back up to the next rung. Clearly this type of training helped him, because he went on to climb the route over a period of 8 days (spread over a significantly longer period).
