This report differs from the State Highway Crash Rate Tables in that it contains crash data on motor carrier crashes only, and does not include data for highway spurs, frontage roads, and the “non-add” segments of highway couplets. Part I, Results of Analysis, contains comparative tables and rates as follows: C Table I compares the crash rates for Total and Truck At-Fault crashes on the State Highway System, by Interstate and Non-Interstate Highway, and by Rural and Urban subgroups. C Table II provides a five-year monthly comparison that counts crashes, injuries and deaths. C Table III presents total highway crash summaries and rates. It includes volumes for all roadways; not only those limited to the State Highway System. Table III also contains Triples mileage and crash rates. C Table IV is a crash summary by highway type for the last five years. C Table V is a five-year summary of crash rates on selected major highways. C Table VI gives a summary of Truck At-Fault crashes with a ranked listing of major causes, first for 2000, and then for a combined five-year ranking. C Table VII gives a summary of Hazardous Material crashes by hazard class that includes hazardous spill information for the years 1994 to 2000, with the most current year’s data presented first. C Table VIII estimates the societal costs of truck crashes in Oregon. Part II, State Highway System, contains a list of state highways by highway number, name, and corresponding route numbers; and a map of the Oregon State Highway System with an enlargement of the Portland area. Part III, Crash Rate Data, presents three years of data for each state highway. The highways are separated into urban and rural subsections as they occur from the beginning of the highway to the end. Crash rates are calculated within these subsections using the number of crashes that occurred within a given milepoint range, and the average truck daily traffic for that stretch of highway. Data provided for each subsection includes current crash rates, current truck at-fault crash rates, and the total Truck and Truck At-Fault crash rates for the previous two years. The most current year’s data is summarized for each highway. This publication of Motor Carrier rate comparisons by State Highway will assist readers in computing Motor Carrier crash rates for specific sections of the State Highway System. 1 2 PART I RESULTS OF ANALYSIS 3 4 Table I - Summary of Motor Carrier Crash Rates on State Highways for 2000 TOTAL TRUCK AT-FAULT Length Truck Crash Crash TOTAL in Miles ADT Crashes Rate Crashes Rate State Highway System 7,465.82 123,809 1,202 0.0036 698 0.0021 Interstate 771.73 41,355 549 0.0471 312 0.0268 Non-Interstate 6,694.09 82,454 653 0.0032 386 0.0019 Primary 4,941.12 81,572 1,062 0.0072 614 0.0042 Interstate 761.76 38,662 547 0.0509 310 0.0288 Non-Interstate 4,179.36 42,910 515 0.0079 304 0.0046 Secondary 2,524.70 42,237 140 0.0036 84 0.0022 Interstate 9.97 2,693 2 0.2041 2 0.2041 Non-Interstate 2,514.70 39,544 138 0.0038 82 0.0023 RURAL State Highway System 6,675.59 86,320 816 0.0039 454 0.0022 Interstate 625.06 29,062 322 0.0486 170 0.0256 Non-Interstate 6,050.53 57,258 494 0.0039 284 0.0022 Primary 4,340.98 59,722 701 0.0074 388 0.0041 Interstate 625.06 29,062 322 0.0486 170 0.0256 Non-Interstate 3,715.92 30,660 379 0.0091 218 0.0052 Secondary 2,334.60 26,598 115 0.0051 66 0.0029 Interstate N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A Non-Interstate 2,334.60 26,598 115 0.0051 66 0.0029 URBAN State Highway System 790.23 155,353 386 0.0086 244 0.0054 5 Interstate 145.30 44,018 178 0.0762 115 0.0493 Non-Interstate 659.95 107,112 180 0.0070 105 0.0041 Primary 600.14 106,552 361 0.0155 226 0.0097 Interstate 136.70 42,374 225 0.1064 140 0.0662 Non-Interstate 463.44 64,178 136 0.0125 86 0.0079 Secondary 190.12 48,801 25 0.0074 18 0.0053 Interstate 9.97 2,693 2 0.2041 2 0.2041 Non-Interstate 180.12 46,108 23 0.0076 16 0.0053 6 Table II - Motor Carrier Crashes – Injuries - Deaths 1996 to 2000 CRASHES INJURIES MONTH 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 January 106 177 155 157 215 52 38 55 42 82 February 113 112 136 175 190 47 52 48 60 44 March 133 122 135 167 124 74 44 23 38 47 April 119 120 133 152 141 36 71 41 41 34 May 114 114 121 146 126 43 44 38 43 38 June 120 123 145 111 149 40 40 48 67 36 July 117 133 157 155 152 56 42 65 76 48 August 140 163 149 134 170 69 58 46 47 66 September 142 192 151 148 154 56 68 59 62 44 October 133 158 154 145 180 58 47 50 57 40 November 152 161 154 156 153 69 62 44 46 45 December 157 165 190 148 181 92 65 60 51 47 Totals 1,546 1,740 1,780 1,794 1,935 692 631 577 630 571 DEATHS MONTH 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 January 7 9 9 7 5 February 5 3 9 1 4 March 4 3 0 4 3 April 3 8 2 3 1 May 3 2 2 3 4 June 7 9 4 6 6 July 9 6 6 15 3 August 8 14 7 4 7 September 4 8 11 8 6 October 6 3 5 1 3 November 5 5 8 3 9 December 2 9 8 1 4 Totals 63 79 71 56 55 7 Table III - Motor Carrier Crashes and Rates 1998 to 2000 Motor Carrier Crash Summary 1998 1999 2000 Motor Carrier Crashes 1,782 1,794 1,935 Deaths 71 56 55 Injuries 577 630 571 Fatal Crashes 65 46 54 Truck At-Fault Summary 1998 1999 2000 Truck At-Fault Crashes 1,063 1,070 1,145 Truck Driver At-Fault Crashes 1,012 1,022 1,106 Truck Mechanical Crashes 51 48 39 Motor Carrier Miles Traveled and Crash Rates 1998 1999 2000 Motor Carrier Miles Traveled (million) 1,774 1,693 1,591 All Motor Carrier Crash Rate (per million VMT) 1.005 1.060 1.216 Truck At-Fault Crash Rate (per million VMT) 0.599 0.632 0.720 Fatal Motor Carrier Crash Rate (per million VMT) 0.037 0.027 0.034 Triples Crashes, Miles Traveled, and Crash Rates 1998 1999 2000 Triples Crashes by Year 16 12 15 Triples Mileage by Year (million) 27.6 27.1 26.9 Triples Crash Rate (per million VMT) 0.580 0.443 0.558 Note: Motor Carrier Miles Traveled is from Highway Use Tax Reports provided by Motor Carrier Transportation Division records.
