Update No.132 - 11 November - A Fine Armistice Day

Lockie’s 12/78 Helps Aces to a 135 Run Win Over Otago

(photo – ACA website) Lockie – 15 4 34 7 & 19.1 5 44 5 Total Match Figures: 34.1 9 78 12 Bowling at great pace, Lockie ferguson shattered Otago’s batting line up – 4 of his 12 were bowled and 2 lbws. Rob Nicol, former Aces skipper now captaining Otago, was lbw in both innings, victim to a couple of vicious yorkers. Derek de Boorder twice went to leave the ball only for it to cut sharply back and take his stumps. Congratulations Lockie and very best wishes for the remainder of the season!

NEWSFLASH! LOCKIE WILL TURN OUT FOR PARNELL THIS SATURDAY DROP EVERYTHING & COME DOWN TO SHORE ROAD AT 11.00am TO SEE LOCKIE BOWL

Men’s Premier Grade Hedley Howarth Trophy - Two Day Championship, Round 3. Day 1.

11 & 18 Nov. 2017 - Day 1. PARNELL vs. EAST COAST BAYS at Shore Road Reserve 1. PARNELL 239/10 Ben Rainger 42, Mitch McCann 51, Dean van Deventer 87; Ryan Harrison 4-62, Louis Delport 6-83

EAST COAST BAYS 128/6 Cole Briggs 45*; Mike Ravlic 3-43 To be continued – Day 2. commences 11.00am Saturday, 18 Nov.

1. Ben Rainger lost opening partner, Flynn McGregor-Sumpter early but with Mitch McCann (2.) got the side off to a solid start after we had lost the toss and been sent in to bat.

1. During their partnership, Waterboy Jacob hands Ben his water bottle. Sadly for us both Ben and Mitch got out just when looking settled for a big total and Andy Lane Brad Rodden and Jesse Simpson all fell quickly, too. Skipper Dave Goddard, back at the helm after missing the previous game, stuck around for a while (photo 2.)

Another Waterboy – Oliver Kittle bringing drinks out to the batsmen

But the saviour of the innings was Dean van Deventer (photos 1 & 2) – a swash-buckling innings of 87 and some stickability from the tail gave us a semi respectable total to defend.

Then our turn to attack – Rav, wicketless last week, was all fire as was Dean. Wickets fell quite steadily though Briggs dug in and remained right through to stumps

Mid afternoon a severe gust toppled the marquee but our scorers remained unruffled -

Catches win matches – Andy Lane take a superb catch at slip despite being slightly unsighted by our ‘keeper

1. Yes Andy, it stuck! 2. Elliot Foster behind the stumps, deputising for Ben, gave a very polished display NOW IT IS ALL ON – ECB, 111 BEHIND WITH 4 WICKETS IN HAND – DAY 2., SATURDAY, SHOULD BE ENTHRALLING AND ……… LOCKIE COULD BE BOWLING FOR US!

What about a 10 win – just as meritorious as an innings win, why not 2 points? 2. Bonus Points are still hugely important – we have missed several already this season – 226/10 vs Cornwall in Round 1., just 4 more runs would have earned an additional point Round 2. – 225/5 vs Howick Pak. & having them 188/8 – 5 more runs & 1 more wicket would have given us 2 additional points. Bonus points are crucial to winning the Championship and players must be very aware of them and to take advantage at every opportunity.

Men’s Premier Reserve Grade – Presidents Cup Two Day Major Championship

11 November PARNELL vs. SUBURBS NEW LYNN Eastdale Reserve 1

SUBURBS NEW LYNN 297/10 B Hick 174 (127), Will St John 1/23 (11), Joe Kinghorn-Gray 2/42 (15) Hamish Robertson 2/70 (14), Henry Glogau 4/67 (11) PARNELL 67/2 Hamish Robertson .30* To be continued – Day 2. commences 11.00am Saturday, 18 Nov.

COACH ROY GOODYEAR REPORTING: We got in a whole days play!! We lost the toss and were asked to field

The day belonged to Ben Hick. His 174 off 127 balls was a master class in bating particularly against spin. His 100 came off 64 balls including 8 x 6's and 5 x 4's. Between Hick and George Hanham they put together a 164 run partnership out of an innings total of 297. At lunch SNL were 182 for 2. After the break the Parnell lads strung together 34 overs of much tighter bowling with William St John and Joe Gray bowling well in tandem. Joe ending up with 2 for 42 off 15 and Will with 1 for 23 off 11. After some early punishment Hamish Robertson and Henry Glogau ended with figures of: 2 for 70 off 14 and 4 for 67 off 11 respectively In reply we batted through a difficult last period of 26 overs on a pitch that had got lower and slower. We ended up with 67 for 2 wickets. Simon wood unfortunately holing out in the penultimate over for 11 runs off 67 balls leaving Hamish Robinson on 30 and Joe Gray taking on the night watchmen duty 7 not out. Roll on next Saturday.

Women’s Premier Reserve Grade – T20

11 November – Armistice Day PARNELL vs. NORTH SHORE Melville Park 4a.

NORTH SHORE 121/5 (20) Emma Nisbet 3/20 PARNELL 90/10 Lexy Bassett 32 (23) RESULT: NORTH SHORE WON BY 31 RUNS

MANAGER TOM BASSETT REPORTING: Hosting North Shore in the third round of the T20 competition, Parnell lost the toss and were sent into the field. North Shore lost an early wicket to Emma Irwin, but then benefitted from some loose bowling to score freely at the start. Emma Nisbet came on to break the partnership – a catch to Ella Lambert. She then dismissed Sam Petherick North Shore’s , opening bat and top-scorer – clean bowled. Emma picked up her third wicket, with a second catch to Lexy Bassett in the covers. However, with four Under 15 players, and a lot of experience, North Shore had the players to keep the run rate going and continued to score reasonably freely. A bright moment off the last ball when Kate Irwin clean bowled Anna Browning for 28. Emma Nisbet was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets for 20, with honourable mention to Renee Macmillan and Emma Irwin whose four overs each went at 2.5 and 3.5 runs per over respectively. Nellie Drumm-Owen kept tidily behind the stumps, taking the keepers gloves, and overall Parnell fielded well. North Shore’s final score was 121 for 5 off their 20 overs. Parnell’s innings started steadily, with Renee and Emma Irwin opening the innings. They looked in little trouble, and Renee scored several boundaries to get the innings going. Unfortunately a run out ended the partnership: 20 for 1 became 21 for 2, and suddenly runs were hard to come by. The run rate mounted until Lexy came in at number five, and scored a quick-fire 32 off 23 balls before falling to a catch on the long leg boundary. The asking rate thereafter was too tough and Parnell’s innings finished in the twentieth over – all out for 90. Renee was second top score with 16, but while Parnell batters generally defended well they found it tough to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Overall, Parnell lost by 31 runs, but it was a commendable effort against a more experienced and older team. It will be good experience for later in the season, if we can learn to score the runs as well as protect our wickets.

Parnell Prem Reserve Women play Papatoetoe at Bloodworth this Saturday in the fourth round.

Men’s Fourth Grade Limited Overs Championship Parnell “Thirds”

11 November – Armistice Day PARNELL THIRDS vs. GRAFTON UNITED Orakei Domain 2

GRAFTON UNITED 194/10 (54) Rudi Bisschoff 16 6 37 3 Elliot Jaffe 14 1 47 3 Simon Walker 6 1 18 2 PARNELL 60/4 (27) Giacomo Lamplough 40* To be continued – Day 2. commences Noon Saturday, 18 Nov.

CAPTAIN/COACH RUDI BISSCHOFF REPORTING: 3rds played their first 2 Day against Grafton at Orakei No 2. We won the toss and elected to bowl. We had plenty of opportunities but 9 drop catches made work hard for the bowlers. Grafton was eventually bowled out for 194 in 57 overs. An overall good display with the ball. J Gardner 76 for Grafton after being dropped on 20 odd. Top bowlers for PCC 3rds was R Bisschoff (16 - 6 - 37 - 3), E Jaffe (14 - 1 - 47 - 3), S Walker (6 - 1 - 18 - 2). PCC are now batting and having lost 4 quick wicket G Lamplough batted well to keep us in it and is 40* at close of play and night watchman M Wali 3* having blocked out half an hour to stumps and currently at 60/4 after 27 overs. We go into day 2 having to get 135 in 33 overs to get first innings.

Can you please note that 3rds would have played on Artificial BUT due to the hard work and effort from Groundsman Dave Keane, we were able to play on grass. The wicket was great and we thank him for everything he did to make it possible for us to get a game on grass.

Men’s Senior Seventh Grade Limited Overs Championship Parnell “Fourths”

11 November – Armistice Day PARNELL FOURTHS vs SUBURBS NEW LYNN at Eastdale Reserve 5a. PARNELL 190/9 dec. (60) Lance Pooley 59, Cam Willis 27 SUBURBS NEW LYNN 65/3 (19) Cam Willis 1/27 (8), James Partridge 1/14 (5) To be continued – Day 2. 18 Nov. CAPTAIN JAMES PARTRIDGE REPORTING: We arrived to Eastdale Reserve with clear skys overhead which had evaded us for the previous two week. With three debutants for the club in our team that was made up of a few new faces and a couple of return service men from last season we were all eager to get out there and play same cricket. We won the toss and chose to bat even though to outfield appeared to be quite long. A couple of early wickets made it slow going and we were 2 down at drinks for 29, however following drinks and with the introduction of their spinners we started to move the run rate along until the 32 over where we lost 2 wickets to end the over 4 down for 80. Pooley and Haren steadied the ship until a loose shot brought Haren innings to an end leaving us 5 down for 106. Willis & Pooley combined for just under a run a ball 62 run partnership, with Willis falling in the 53 over. In the final few overs a couple of small partnerships but 3 wickets fell. Looking for some early wickets Willis steamed in down the hill and had the batsmen waving their bats at thin air, unfortunately when the nick did come we were unable to take the catch. Some loose bowling helped the openers establish themselves and it was not until the 12th over that got our first wicket. Shortly after Willis got his man with a great ball aiming in at the batsman’s body and removed his leg stump. The fall of this wicket appeared to unsettle the batsman and the new pair tried to take a suicide single but Haren pounced on the ball and our keeper did the rest. After receiving a stern talking to from their captain the batsman blocked out the final few overs of the day. Special mention go Lance Pooley for his 59 runs on Debut, also Willis for his 27 plus his firebrand opening spell. Finally a mention should go out to Scott Hillman for his efforts behind the stumps letting through no byes with some acrobatic drives after not keeping for a number of years.

Men’s One Day Grades Grade 1B Parnell “Kings” 11 November – Armistice Day PARNELL KINGS vs HOWICK PAKURANGA at Shore Road 2a. HOWICK PAKURANGA 123/10 (26.1) Chak 4/15, Abrar 3/21 PARNELL 126/6 (20.5) Abrar 51, Roy 52* RESULT: PARNELL KINGS WON BY 4 WICKETS CHAK ARUNACHALAM REPORTING FOR SKIPPER SOWNDAR We played against Howick Pakuranga at Shore road 2a and it was a fine day and we lost the toss and were asked to bowl first. Aaron and Arul bowled a great first spell. They both bowled tight lines and runs were really hard to come. Arul got rewarded for his discipline and got the first wicket with the batsman nicking one behind and Keeper Roy taking a beauty. Aaron was unlucky not to get a wicket. Sowndar and karthik came on next and got a wicket each. Chak was introduced just before drinks and immediately got the result in his first over. Chak then bowled brilliantly and got wickets regularly and Abrar on the other end kept things tight as well and was rewarded with wickets. Howick was soon dismissed for 123 in 26.1overs. Chak taking 4 and Abrar 3 wickets each. Chasing a small total Parnell was in trouble initially with Chak getting out in the first over and Arul following suit in the 3rd. But Abrar was at his usual best smashing the bowlers all over the park. Though wickets fell at regular intervals Abrar got going and reached his 50 in no time. But was dismissed soon after. Roy who have Abrar good company and rotated the stike then took over playing some wonderful shots and scoring some quick runs and reached his 50 as well as taking us through in just 20.5 overs. It was a good win and keeps us at the top of the table.

Presidents’ Grade Fantastic, Mark Smith has “volunteered”, Army style, to regularly report on some (emphasis on “some”) of the Pressies’ on field activities. He also supplied the Team photo below – a fine body of men!

11 November – Armistice Day PARNELL PRESSIES vs AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY at Thos. Bloodworth Pk. PARNELL 223/8 Chris Laycock 85 (77), Everard Lee 36 (42), Simon Payton 31 (34) AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY 171/10 (33.5) Marc O’Gorman 2/25, Everard Lee 5/42 (6.5) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 52 RUNS MARK REPORTS Match report for PCC Presidents vs Auckland University CC Saturday 11 November at Bloodworth Park. The parting of the rain clouds allowed the inaugural match of the season to be played under calm skies. PCC batted first. It became apparent, early, that playing shots along the ground would be slow, on account of the bundles of cut grass spread inside the inner ring. Opening batsman Chris Laycock showed his fitness by scoring 85 off 77 balls running most of them, with the odd boundary. He was assisted by another newcomer, Caribbean Everard Lee 36 off 42 and Simon Payton 31 off 34. Lee also showed true bottle as umpire giving skipper Lindberg out LBW first ball. A significant collapse of the tail followed, resulting in the final score of 223/8 being posted. Robinson and O'Gorman opened the bowling as usual. The difference in styles is mind blowing, the only similarity being the length of run up. Robbo very tidy and accurate was treated with respect 0-22 off 7 overs. Gormo 2-25 was unlucky being dropped twice by MacCulloch (2 from 5 attempts). This was highlighted by the statistician so mentioned. First change, Monteiro kept the pressure on 0-11 off 4 overs 2 maidens. The run rate was down when Lee was asked to bowl. A great spell followed as he took a Michelle (Ed: fiver) for 42 runs in 6.5 overs. AUCC 171 all out in 33.5 overs. Given our tried and true batsmen did not fire it was a pleasure to see the newcomers contribute heavily with the bat, ball and LBW decisions. An encouraging, if belated, start to the season.

Added bonus, Craig Speakman beat a retreat from the Prems & spied on the Pressies:

Two views of Everard Lee – Caribbean flair

Chris Laycock – first bat for many years – really? 85 off 77 balls rather belies that!

Evergreen Gormo at full tilt

Neil MacCullough - all guile

Mark Smith on the attack

‘Keeper Simon Payton – “he’s down the track, got the ball, bails off - Square Leg Ump. agrees!” A stumping without the need for DRS!

News of Juniors

No reports received this week but I can comment that the GRADE 1 MUSTER on Friday evenings is proving a great social event as well as introducing our wee youngsters to the game. Huge enthusiasm amongst the 5 year olds under the guidance of Joe Kinghorn-Gray and his coaching team. Very grateful thanks to young Fergus Meredith who, after all other have departed, has helped tidy up the aftermath at the conclusion of the last two Friday gatherings.

Whilst her brother was being coached with the other 5 year olds, Katie Haggitt, who will be two next week, found the Club’s Annual Report interesting reading

What Parnell Cricketers (& our Sponsor) Also Get Up To

Last Sunday, as a Rotarian, your Editor was a Duck Race Starter at the Vector Wero White Water Park, a quite amazing facility. Shortly after the last race, and the leading ducks “paddling” frantically downstream to the winning post, the “also rans” had to be rounded up – the job given to the canoeing fraternity. WILL PAYTON, (son of Pressies’ Simon) who turns out for Parnell when he can, is pictured below hard at work for Wero.

A lot of fun, a great fundraiser, in this instance for the Life Education Trust and Rotary projects. Huge thanks to all the donors and especially Ray White/Megan Jaffe Real Estate, a major sponsor.
