Premier Mens’Grade Hedley Howarth Trophy – Two Day Championship Round 3. Saturday 2 December PARNELL vs PAPATOETOE at Shore Road Reserve 1.

PARNELL 319/4 (50) Ben Rae 56 (54), Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 84 (110), Jesse Simpson 24 (26), Andy Lane 57 (65), Brad Rodden 55* (51), Ollie Pringle 22* (15), H Vyas 3/45 (9) PAPATOETOE 186/10 (36.3) N Ajula 68 (63), D Bhatti 34 (52), Henry King 4/40 (9), Ollie Pringle 3/43 (9) Josh Fisher 1/33 (7), Aniket Parikh 2/31 (7) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 133 RUNS

Opening partnership 96 – Flynn, 84, Ben 56 What a joy that, on a beautifully fine day, our batsmen all made hay. Ben Rae set the scene with a typically dashing half and Jesse kept up the momentum. Through this, Flynn McGregor-Sumpter maintained stability at the other end – 96 for the 1st with Ben and 140 when Jesse fell to Vyas, the 7th bowler used by Papatoetoe.

Jesse, Andy and Brad – a feast of classic, and very powerful drives On it went, Andy kept the flow coming putting on 91 with Flynn. Flynn was at 231, a hugely important innings, both for the side and for Flynn. With Ben Rainger out with a damaged shoulder for some time, Flynn has stepped up wonderfully. Then the Skipper – Brad really took the Papatoetoe attack apart. Andy had departed (at 250/4) but Ollie came in to play an ideal cameo. Brad and Ollie remained undefeated when the innings ended at 319/4.

Then Ollie – first with the bat, then with the ball in partnership with Henry King Henry and Ollie struck immediately with wickets falling at 1 and 9, then two in the forties capped by three in the seventies. Josh had chipped in claiming the 7th wicket at 76. With Papatoetoe reeling, Ajula and Bhatti dug in, played some superb shots and added 88 before Aniket removed Bhatti. Ajula hung on but Henry returned and had him caught by the Skipper – 182/9 and Aniket tidied up in the 37th over. A very satisfying day after the frustrations of the previous week.

Josh and Aniket gave great support and Giacomo had 4 over but without success

Premier Mens’Grade T20 Championship Pool 2. Round 2. Wednesday, 12 December PARNELL vs GRAFTON UNITED at Shore Road Reserve 1. GRAFTON UNITED 132/8 (20) O Westbury 71 (61), O Pringle 2/20, J Fisher 2/20 PARNELL 136/4 (18.3) Ben Rae 55 (38), M Sneddon 2/14 RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 6 WICKETS Despite Grafton’s pro, Ollie Westbury, leading the way early, his dismissal at 109 saw a collapse and our bowlers contained well. However, 133 target was not easy in the deepening gloom. Overcast conditions meant no twilight but Ben Rae struck the ball superbly and cameos from Jesse, Andy, Ollie, Aniket and Brad the target was in sight when, DVD came to the crease and ended the game with one hit for 6. Note: Ollie Westbury – ex Shrewsbury School, England U19s & Worcestershire 2nd XI, had played two 1st Class games.

Maddy Curran skittles Papatoetoe’s no. 11 and the game is won! Determined, even dogged by Parnell, with a very generous helping of extras (41 wides) allowed us to build up a very defendable total. No big score but Emma, Yasmin and other sticking around gave our bowlers a total to defend. And defend it they did – a tremendous achievement in winning their second game in succession. More wins are sure to follow!

8 December Round 3. PARNELL vs NORTH SHORE at Orakei Domain 1... PARNELL 234/4 (50) Cam Gibbons 59, Will Ormiston 111*, Dean van Deventer 37 NORTH SHORE 191/10 (42.2) Simon Walker 2/45 (10), Razin Bharde 2/28 (10) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 43 RUNS

COACH, “VICAR” ROY GOODYEAR REPORTING: Good weather came at last to give us an uninterrupted day of Cricket. We won the toss and elected to bat An excellent opening partnership of 121 between Cam Gibbons (59) and Will Ormiston (111 ) laid the foundation for a total of 234 for 4 wickets. The highlight of the innings was Will Ormiston's 111 not out, carrying his bat through the innings. Will was particularly strong down the wicket with excellent driving in the V, He was well supported upfront by Cam Gibbons as the two worked so well together, assisting each other in keeping focused on the job in hand. They faced some testing times with the North Shore attack not giving too much away. It was really good cricket from both sides. Dean van Deventer played a cameo, smashing a huge six in his total of 37 off 23 balls along with Keegan Russell chipping in with 10 off 10,all at a time when we looking to accelerate our innings 234 for 4 was our total off the allotted 50 overs In reply: North Shore looked to attack our bowling from the outset with their opener James O' Brien scoring 58. The wickets were shared around with; Keegan Russel 1 for 32 off 6 overs Simon Walker 2 for 45 off his 10 overs, he bowled really well on a wicket giving him little assistance Razin Bharde 2 for 28 off his 10 overs, he contained the batsmen and brought their run rate back significantly Sam Klippel 1 for 24 off his 4 overs Cam Gibbons 0 for 29 off 7 overs, bowling his "straight" off spinners helped with pegging back their run rate Last but not least, DVD came into the attack to finish off two balls off a Hugh Teesdale over when he was removed from the attack due to two full tosses being bowled, unintentionally of course. DVD then proceeded to take 3 wickets for 3,runs off the 13 balls he bowled. He bowled off spin, don't know how much it turned but it was definitely all "flight and guile" As a Premier player (who is on the injured list)!! I have to thank DVD for his approach to game and the side; adding advice and motivation to the lads, this attitude is what our club thrives on, thanks Dean. North Harbour ended up on 191 all out in 43rd over A good game, played in good spirit Congrats men.

8 December Round 5. PARNELL vs WAITAKERE at Melville Park 5a PARNELL 139/3 (20) Kate Irwin 87* (69) WAITAKERE 99/8 (19.1) A Smith 3/8 (4) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 40 RUNS A wonderful, unbeaten, innings of 87 by Kate Irwin, off just 69 balls, set the scene for this resounding win by Parnell. Only Ella Drumm reached double figures a well. Ella, no. 8, came in at 126/6 and her partnership of 34 with Emma was crucial in setting a winning total. Ella’s 13 off 8 balls was worth heaps more than the figures show. Waitakere responded with an opening stand of 38 but wickets fell regularly and a very well deserved win was the result.

THIRDS – 4th Grade: 8 December Round 2. PARNELL vs AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY at Colin Maiden Park AUCC 181/10 Pete Hickman 3/42, Elliot Jaffe 2/26 PARNELL 151/10 Dinesh Kharel 40 RESULT: AUCC WON BY 30 WICKETS SKIPPER ELLIOT JAFFE REPORTING: PCC won the toss and elected to bowl first. Hickman 3/42, Jaffe 2/26 and some good bowling from Cam Rope, Ashwin Haran and Dinesh Kharel restricted AUCC to 181 all out. In reply we batted too slowly, finding ourselves at 60/3 after 22. Overs caught up with us and we ended up 155 all out. Kharel ended up with 40 runs. A difficult loss to take, however we can still bounce back and put ourselves into a strong position in the table going into Christmas.

FOURTHS – 7th Grade – 8 December Round 4. PARNELL vs CORNWALL CORNWALL 68/10 Logan Strange 3/23 (5), James Partridge 3/11 (4), Lance Pooley 2/19 (6) PARNELL 69/8 Wides 27 RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 2 WICKETS SKIPPER JAMES PARTRIDGE: Reporting on the Fourths (the “Prunes”) v Cornwall After our last two weeks being washed out the Prunes were eager to get out on the ground and play some cricket, we lost the toss and were asked to bowl. A few of the boys were a little under the weather after a Friday night on the turps, some were still sleeping when the first ball was to be bowled. We start the match with only 9 players on the field, with Strange and Konara opening the bowling with some tight bowling, Strange had picked up two early wickets before our full quota turned up. Before we knew it Strange had picked up 3 wickets before his fourth over was done and we had Cornwall on the ropes 3 down for 35 runs at the end of the 10th over. We brought on Partridge and Pooley with instant success as Partridge took a wicket with his second ball then both both took wickets in their 3rd and 4th overs and Cornwall were 8 down for 62 run after 16 over over. We then brought on our twin spin Humphries & Khalid who both finished with 1 wicket a piece. Cornwall only had 9 wickets and finished their innings all out for 68 runs. We started our chase with Paewai and Noland opening and both got off the mark with nice nudges through the slips cordon before Noland was bowled for 1, which brought our inform batsman Van Wyk to the crease unfortunately his stay was short lived being caught behind for 8 . Due to the inaccuracy of the Cornwall bowlers the score kept ticking over as wides were a constant. Wickets fell at regular intervals as we gradually moved towards the 69 run target. Which we managed to do in the 22 over after we had lost 8 wickets. We bowled great today however the lack of stability in our batting list up was a worrying sign, as we head into next week’s game against the top of the table Suburbs side. Highlight from the game were Logan Strange 3 for 23 off 5 overs, James Partridge 3 for 11 off 4 overs and Lance Pooley 2 for 19 off 6 overs. A honourable mention needs to go to Mr Wide who was a constant support for our batsmen and top scored for our team with 27 runs.

Men’s One Day Grades 8 December Round 4. PARNELL KINGS vs GRAFTON TIGERS PARNELL KINGS 199/10 (40) Abrar 48, Sai 44, Vignesh 32* GRAFTON TIGERS 142/10 (32.5) Sai 4/21, Aaron 2/26, Sowndar 1/13 RESULT: PARNELL KINGS WON BY 57 RUNS Chak Arunachalam Reporting: On a beautiful sunny day, Abrar lost the toss and Kings were forced to bat first. Abrar and Mani opened the innings. It wasn't a great start for Kings as Mani got out early edging one to the slips. Karthik followed him soon and Kings were struggling at 18 for 2. Abrar and Roopesh showed some resistance and made sure no more wickets were lost till half time, thanks to opponents for throwing away few catches, but the scoring rate was just above three. Trying to accelerate, Roopesh and Abrar got out in quick succession. Abrar got out to a well made 48. Arul got off to a quick start but was unlucky to get out trying to flick a wide ball. Chak, batting low down the order, was adjourned lbw very early in his innings. Kings were 6 down for 103 and were in bit of trouble. Roy smashed 2 big sixes in an over, bringing the hope of big score for the team. Next over, his stumps went for a walk as Roy played all over a ball that kept low. Sai and Vignesh came together and did what they were good at - smashed the bowlers all over the park. Opponents didn't have an answer to their hard hitting combined with quick running between the wickets. In no time they put on 74 runs for the 8th wicket. Kings lost three wickets in the 40th over but got to a respectable score of 199. Aaron and Arul started the proceedings with the ball for kings. Batsmen found it really hard to put bat on ball but kept trying. Arul got the first break through when the batsmen hit straight to Mani at short mid-wicket. Aaron joined the party next over with Karthik making no mistake at gully. Sowndar and Sai replaced the bowling attack and kept the batsmen guessing. Sowndar sent the opponent captain packing with his middle stump out of the ground. On the other hand, Sai trapped the other opening batsmen in front. Every change of bowling worked for Abrar as Chak and Vignesh took a wicket each. Just when Kings were smelling a victory, one of the batsmen smashed 3 massive sixes and the pair put on 42 runs quickly. Abrar got back to his trump card, Aaron, in desperate need of a wicket. Aaron responded to the captain's call and got rid of the batsmen when he skied a slower one. Sai completed the formalities giving kings their victory. A big thank you to our sponsors and supporters for their continuing support.

8 December Round 7. PARNELL vs MT at Shore Road 2a. PARNELL 163/9 (35) Ruchir 56 (45) MT WELLINGTON 166/3 (20.2) R Weerasinge 100 (58) RESULT: MT WELLINGTON WON BY 7 WICKETS

Despite the efforts of these gentlemen – Rudi, Ruchir, Keith and Neil – Mt Wellington chased down our total with ease

Baby G actually captured a wicket – but not enough

Earlier, John, Ruchir, Rudi and others could only muster 163/9 in their 35 overs SKIPPER CHRIS LAYCOCK REPORTING: We were looking forward to fielding our strongest line up against top of the table Mt Wellington, but injuries, sleep deprivation and other woeful distractions prevented us from doing so. We were put in to bat and again dropped early wickets, Ruchir thrived against the opening spin attack and finally got himself through the 20’s and notched up a well constructed 56 off 45 balls. We crept through to an under par 163/9 off our 35 overs. Mt Wellington have scored at 9 per over so far this season often exceeding 300 from their 35 overs, we were keen to see what all the fuss was about. We started well hanging onto some difficult catches securing 2 early wickets. Then in came Arnold (ex Sri Lankan Warrior) who immediately started dismantling our bowlers best efforts. We couldn’t field far enough back at cow corner and when our bowlers took an “outside off” line he displayed his ability to reverse sweep us with similar effect, he retired on 100 off 39 balls. Rudi, Greg J and Keith took a wicket each thanks to 3 good catches and I’m sure all of our bowlers would thank me for not dwelling on their economy rates. Mt Wellington reached our total inside 21 overs but more disappointing than that was the blown out calf, tweaked hammy and ruptured ligament/fractured thumb injuries we can now add to our list. In typical Pressies fashion we hosted our opposition back at the club rooms and enjoyed the glow of both Premier sides emphatic wins along side us at home. Better news predicted next week.

Gillette Cup New Zealand Secondary Schools Cricket The Gillette Cup dates from 1990 and is the most highly sought after secondary school cricket trophy. Scholarship are sought, and given, by the top competing schools eager for sporting success. Contrary to recent publicity, , the current All Black captain didn’t get a rugby scholarship to Saint Kentigern College. Way back, Read did attend Saint Kents in Year 9, but on a cricket scholarship. This lasted only one year as he went back to his Pukekohe mates at Rosehill for the rest of his schooling.

GILLETTE CUP 2018 – 45 overs TOURNAMENT: Auckland schools were represented this year by King’s College who fielded a side with only one Parnell CC lad – Nathan Robinson. The Tournament was very closely fought and King’s has to be deemed unlucky as they lost two games by very narrow margins. Eventual winner was Wellington College, BH 2nd with King’s 3rd, just nudging Hamilton Boys into 4th place. King’s beat BHS in round 1. But lost their 2nd their 2nd to Christchurch BH - 4 of King’s top 6 batsmen were run out! King’s then lost by 4 runs to ’s King’s HS despite Nathan Robinson’s 65. Then further calamity: Round 4 – Wellington College 235/10 (49.3) vs King’s College – to quote NZ Cricket’s report: “King’s College run chase started poorly with two early wickets, but skipper Thorn Parkes (82) and Nathan Robinson (62) built a n excellent partnership of 115 to place King’s in the box seat. As the pressure of the chase came on wickets started to fall. With just a single run needed and four wickets in hand King’s were in prime position to record their second victory of the week. Remarkable bowling from Wellington’s Dylan Sharma (4-31) and Henry Chandler (4-41) had something to say about that and with three balls remaining King’s last batsman was run out handing victory to Wellington” In the playoff for 3rd, the King’s openers started outstandingly – Nathan Robinson 81 and T Simmonds 66 – and totaled 275/5 in the 45 overs. Hamilton BHS responded well – Jacob Parker hitting 110 – but fell 8 short . With points equal, King’s had the superior run rate by just 0.01 and so gained 3rd place. Wellington College took the Final – 250/9 beating Christchurch BHS, 210/10 by 40 runs. Wellington’s Tim Campbell (also Karori CC) was the outstanding batsman of the Tournament. He scored consistently well in all games including 114 vs King’s HS. The Tables below tell the story – Nathan Robinson also performed extremely well, his successive innings of 65, 62 and 81 being most impressive. Nathan is currently playing for the EDCA U17 XI in the White Cross ACA Age Group Tournament – his scores in the first two game have been 78 and 20.

Nathan Robinson – at the Parnell CC Awards Dinner last April when he was awarded the TW Jarvis Cup for his 227

EDITORIAL – THE GILLETTE CUP, SCHOOLBOY CRICKET and COLLEGE SPORT IN GENERAL: With so much media attention being given to and alleging that schools “poach” rugby player for their own grandisment, it is interesting to consider the history of the Gillette Cup. As mentioned above, Kieran Read received a “cricket scholarship” but turned down Saint Kentigern, and cricket. Note the relative lack of cricketing success of the Auckland schools/colleges. Having, years back, served on the m, anagement committees of the Southland and Nelson Cricket Associations, I am quite sure that country boys grow up much harder mentally than city lads as they play either with, or against, MEN. They play ADULT cricket wit/against ADULTS. Hence the overwhelming successes of Christchurch BHS, Otago BH and Palmerston North HS teams. Of the Auckland schools, Saint Kentigern has only won once, in 1991 when Mark Richardson and Adam Parore were in the XI and hard nosed Ross Morgan was their coach. King’s College has fared very much better – I believe for two reasons. First, a cricket culture generated by excellent coaching. Peter Barton and then Roy Goodyear were legendary coaches. And so many of their players had already had an excellent grounding in the basics of the game at Parnell, Auckland University and Grafton United Cricket Clubs. Some may also have come from Cornwall. These clubs, Parnell in particular, have provided top class coaching for many years and youngsters complete their Year 8 as very competent cricketers. T20s are not for them – they want REAL games and I am very worried at the turn of events this season in which basic/sound technique is being devalued by the requirement of shortened pitches (to 18m), shortened boundaries, many and varied coloured balls (and of smaller size). There is many a 12 year old who’s growth spurt has taken him over 6 foot and to have him hurtling in with a new ball from 18m, and with a 142g ball, would be terrifying, even to an adult. And, by the age of 10, OUT should be OUT – kids need to learn, early, to value their wicket. This is a personal view, but I am sure that I have huge backing from parents and, especially, from professional coaches, that this tinkering with the way Junior cricket is played should be stopped – it is destroying a club/district setup that has worked brilliantly well for many, many years. Now look at the Gillette Cup stats from 1990 below. Bryan Haggitt EDITOR Participants[edit] The numbers of teams entered has increased fairly steadily from 75 in 1990 to 198 schools entering the 2013 competition. 10 December EASTERN DISTRICTS U18s vs SAINT JOSEPHS at Auckland Grammar School, Lower Ground

EDCA 217 (50) Sajith Dhamagolla 41, George Corey-Wright 30, Flynn Dudson 36, A Paulsen 25* Thibault de la Varis 40* SAINT JOSEPH’S 174/10 Bailey Service 3/17 (6), Thibault de la Varis 2/13 (4.3), Seb Stephan 2/24 (6) RESULT: EDCA WON BY 43 RUNS Coach Ian Trott has commented “Some good fielding, good catches & a runout- direct hit (Dhamagolla) from side on! Very good day to build up for the coming Tournament”.

Saint Joseph’s have brought four teams across to play cricket. They have played Saint Kentigern College and this game, and others, have been arranged thanks to EDCA administrators. Very timely as, with the reduction by Auckland Cricket in the scope of their annual Age Group tournaments, there are many youngsters who would, otherwise have been deprived of cricket. Congratulations to James Dudson of EDCA and his team!

Test Cricket & Quiz LAST WEEK’S QUESTIONS: Watching ’s 100 was heart warming in the extreme but some Parnell cricketers have also performed outstandingly on the international stage: PLEASE NAME (ANSWERS IN RED) 1. The batsman who scored 197 and 128 in his first game against an international team For Otago vs MCC (Walter Hammond’s team), March 1947 at - Bert then made his Test debut in the next game scoring 53 for NZ vs England

2. The bowler who took 8/66 in an innings against an international team (32. 7. 66. 8) Geoff Rabone For Auckland vs An Australian XI (Ian Craig’s team), March 1957, at Eden Park – Geoff’s victims were Favell, O’Neill, Craig, Jarman, Drennan, Gaunt, Meckiff & Kline – a who’s who of Australian teams over the next decade

3. The bowler who took match figures of 11/180 in a Test Chris Martin vs , 22 March 2014 at Eden Park Sth Africa 296 Martin 6/76 & 349 Martin 5/104 NZ 595 Styris 170, 158 & 51/1 NZ won by 9 wickets CONGRATULATIONS to Alan Graham (formerly of Parnell CC, now Karori CC) – 100% correct. Also to Jocelyn Goodger for 2 out of 3 correct (Geoff Rabone was the stumbling block).

No Question this week, just some facts about NZ’s Test playing history. New Zealand gained “Test Match” status in 1929 and England sent a team, captained by AHH Gilligan here in 1928/29 to mark the occasion and 4 Tests were played. Parnell’s scorer, Alison Hall, scored in the 4th Test becoming the first woman Test scorer.

By 1972, New Zealand had played 105 Tests: By 2018, the imbalance has been somewhat corrected: vs. ENGLAND 42 Tests 103 SOUTH AFRICA 17 48 INDIA 16 57 PAKISTAN 15 58 WEST INDIES 14 47 1 57 but not since 2015/16. Next – 1.1.2020 Total 105 370 Interesting to note that the All Blacks, between 1929 & 1972, had played 48 rugby Tests vs Australia for 36 wins, 11 lost, 1 drawn.

The relationship between the NZ Cricket Council and the Australian Cricket Board of Control has, over the years been a most disappointing one. The book below has just recently been published by Ronald Cardwell’s The Cricket Publishing Company of NSW. Stephen Walters, the author, is very critical of the neglect Australian cricket showed to New Zealand. “A Forgotten Adventure”- the story of the first NZ vs Australia Test of 1945/46 is fascinating and, whilst I have browsed through it already, it will be my main reading in the holiday weeks coming.
