Abstract The purpose of the study was to compare migration behaviour and survival of acoustic and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tagged juvenile salmonids passing dams on the Columbia River, Washington State, USA. Downstream migrating yearling chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha Walbaum 1792), steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum 1792), sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka Walbaum 1792), and sub-yearling chinook smolts were individually implanted with either acoustic or PIT tags and monitored at Rocky Reach and Rock Island dams dur- ing spring and summer 2002. Travel times and detection rates were compared for acoustic (“A” tag weight 1.0 g and “E” tag weight 1.5 g) and PIT (tag weight 0.06 g) tagged fish released upstream of Rocky Reach Dam and detected at a Surface Collector Bypass Channel and further downstream at the Rock Island Dam project. -

Your comments have provided valuable public, agency. and tribal input to the SOR NEPA process, Throughout the SOR. we have made a continuing effort to keep the public informed and involved. Fourteen public scoping meetings were held in 1990. A series of public roundtables was conducted in November 1991 to provide an update on the status of SOR studies. Tbe lead agencies went back 10 most of the 14 communities in 1992 with 10 initial system operating strategies developed from the screening process. From those meetings and other consultations, seven SOS alternatives (with options) were developed and subjected to full-scale analysis. The analysis results were presented in the Draft EIS released in July 1994. The lead agencies also developed alternatives for the other proposed SOR actions, including a Columbia River Regional Forum for assisting in the detennination of future sass, Pacific Northwest Coordination Agreement alternatives for power coordination, and Canadian Entitlement Allocation Agreements alternatives. A series of nine public meetings was held in September and October 1994 to present the Draft EIS and appendices and solicit public input on the SOR. The lead agencies·received 282 fonnal written comments. Your comments have been used to revise and shape the alternatives presented in the Final EIS. -

FOREWORD Most travelers who have driven through eastern Washington have seen a geologic and scenic feature that is unique-nothing like it is to be found anywhere else in the world. This is the Channeled Scab land, a gigantic series of deeply cut channels in the erosion-resistant Columbia River basalt, the rock that covers most of the east-central and southeastern part of the state. Grand Coulee, with its spectac ular Dry Falls, is one of the most widely known features of this ex tensive set of dry channels. Many thousands of travelers must have wondered how this Chan neled Scabland came into being, and many geologists also have speculated as to its origin. Several geologists have published papers outlining their theories of the scabland's origin, but the geologist who has made the most thorough study of the problem and has ex amined the whole area and all the evidence having a bearing on the problem is Dr. J Harlen Bretz. Lawrence The interrelationship of rock assemblages in the Prairie Mountain area suggests that a Permo-Triassic subduction zone existed in the western North Cascades.The2fsquare mile rneta- igneous complex in the thesis area correlates with other tectonic bodies which occur west of the Straight Creek Fault.The rocks are uniquely associated with thrust faulting, a blueschist terrane and a possible melange of deformed Late Paleozoic sediments and meta- sediments.In the Prairie Mountain area the meta.- igneous rocks were emplaced by thrust and high-angle reversefaults into the Late Paleozoic Chilliwack Group.The meta-igneous rocks are metadio- rites, meta- quartz diorites, metatrondlijemites, mylonite gneis ses, rare greenstone metavoLcanic s and metamorphosed ultramafi.c s. Though the rocks were metamorphosed to the greenschist facies, only locally do they display a strong metamorphic fabric. A weak secondary cataclastic overprint resulting from ucoldtt intrusion is superimposed on the meta-igneous rocks. The meta-igneous rocks possibly represent fragments of island arc crust and/or oceanic crust that were incorporated into a Permo- Triassic subductj.on zone from a position -

The Teanaway Valley was part of the summering grounds for these tribes. The name Teanaway possibly had its origins in a Sahaptin word, tyawnawí-ins, meaning “Drying Place”. • The watershed is within the ceded area of the Yakama Nation under the Treaty of 1855. Photo by Adam Johnson Teanaway History Farming, grazing, and timber harvest became important within the watershed as European immigrants and other settlers began moving into the area in the late 1800s. Sheep and livestock grazing occurred, and at various times, several thousand head of livestock grazed in the area. Timber harvest within the forest began early in the 1900s. Zartman INTRODUCTION Bedrock of the Chelan 1:100,000 quadrangle displays a long and varied geologic history (fig. 1). Pioneer geologic work in the quadrangle began with Bailey Willis (1887, 1903) and I. C. Russell (1893, 1900). A. C. Waters (1930, 1932, 1938) made the first definitive geologic studies in the area (fig. 2). He mapped and described the metamorphic rocks and the lavas of the Columbia River Basalt Group in the vicinity of Chelan as well as the arkoses within the Chiwaukum graben (fig. 1). B. M. Page (1939a, b) detailed much of the structure and petrology of the metamorphic and igneous rocks in the Chiwaukum Mountains, further described the arkoses, and, for the first time, defined the alpine glacial stages in the area. C. L. Willis (1950, 1953) was the first to recognize the Chiwaukum graben, one of the more significant structural features of the region. The pre-Tertiary schists and gneisses are continuous with rocks to the north included in the Skagit Metamorphic Suite of Misch (1966, p. 102-103). Peter Misch and his students established a framework of North Cascade metamorphic geology which underlies much of our construct, especially in the western part of the quadrangle. Our work began in 1975 and was essentially completed in 1980. -

CHAPTER 2. ECOSYSTEM PROFILE 2.1 Introduction Kittitas County is situated in central Washington on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains, between the Cascade Crest and the Columbia River in the Columbia River basin. The county is contained within three major basins: Upper Yakima (Water Resource Inventory Area [WRIA] 39), Alkali – Squilchuck (WRIA 40), and Naches basin (WRIA 38). Of the 2,297 square miles that constitutes Kittitas County, the majority, 78 percent, lies within the Upper Yakima basin (WRIA 39), which drains into the Yakima River. The Alkali – Squilchuck basin (WRIA 40) comprises 17 percent of the county in the eastern portion and drains into the Columbia River. The remaining 5 percent of the county is contained in the Naches basin (WRIA 38) on its southwestern edge and drains into the Little Naches River, which becomes the Naches River joining the Yakima River in Yakima County. Figure 2-1 shows the locations of the WRIAs in Kittitas County. Four different ecoregions are found within Kittitas County: North Cascades, Cascades, Eastern Cascades Slopes and Foothills, and Columbia Plateau (Figure 2-2). The North Cascades ecoregion, found in the northwestern portion of the county, is characterized by glaciated valleys and narrow-crested ridges punctuated by rugged, high relief peaks approaching 8,000 feet above mean sea level (AMSL). It is forested with fir, hemlock, and, in the drier eastern margins, pine. The Cascades ecoregion, located in southwestern Kittitas County, is similar to the North Cascades, but in contrast has more gently undulating terrain, the climate is more temperate, and there is less occurrence of ponderosa pine.
