  • ?Mckenna Long?????Dentons??????
?McKenna Long?????Dentons?????? Consolidation at the top of the global legal industry is showing no signs of stopping with the confirmation that Dentons, fresh off its last big international tie-up, wants to again walk down the aisle — this time with U.S.-bound McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP. Denton's potential addition of the Atlanta-based, 575-lawyer McKenna Long would add a significant new branch to Dentons' growing international structure, which now includes about 2,500 lawyers in 50 countries. If completed, the merger would bring Dentons to a top-three spot in the industry by size, with about 3,100 lawyers. In McKenna Long, Dentons would acquire a well-regarded but somewhat undifferentiated general services firm with solid roots in government contracts, established offices in a handful of major U.S. markets, a network of Washington contacts and no significant international profile. Among its more notable offerings is the firm's intellectual property and technology practice led by D.C.- and Seoul-based partner Song Jung, which has done considerable work for Korean tech giant LG Corp., among others. The addition of McKenna Long "adds to [Dentons'] capacities in D.C. and Los Angeles and San Francisco,” said firm management consultant Eric Seeger, a principal at legal consultant firm Altman Weil Inc. "They already had Chicago, and it gives them a large Atlanta office." For the McKenna Long partners now considering the deal, joining Dentons would immediately vault them from an increasingly squeezed U.S. middle tier into a global network with a slew of multinational clients, but one that is likely still experiencing growing pains from repeated cross-border mergers, experts say.

THE BRITISH INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL AND COMPARATIVE LAW Charles Clore House, 17 Russell Square, London WC1B 5JP Tel: (+44)(0)20 7862 5151 E-mail: [email protected] Fax: (+44)(0)20 7862 5152 No 1 www.biicl.org February 2006 NEWSLETTER RECENT ACTIVITIES Study on Legalisation of Documents between Member States of the European Union The Institute has been awarded a major contract by the Justice and Home Affairs Directorate of the European Commission to study the difficulties faced by citizens and economic operators because of the obligation to legalize documents within the Member States of the European Union, and the possible options for abolishing or simplifying this obligation. The citizens of Member States of the European Union should benefit, at least in theory, from expedited procedures in the authentification of documents. Starting with the 1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, there are a number of international agreements—and provisions of European Community law—that eliminate the need for legalization of certain documents. Whether this has been effectively realized is uncertain, however. Therefore the proposed Study will be concerned with the extent to which legalization (or equivalent formality) of a specified range of documents constitutes a barrier to the exercise of the freedoms established in the Treaties, most notably the free movement of persons and freedom of establishment. The Study will examine the nature and frequency of such problems, the possible solutions in the context of the Treaty freedoms, as well as the creation of a common area of law and justice in the European Union.

Legal Services Act Update Welcome to the Spring 2014 edition of our Legal Services Act Update, an e-update detailing recent press coverage of how the professional services community and regulatory bodies are responding to the major changes facilitated by the Legal Services Act 2007. This issue highlights the progress made in legal services deregulation and business innovation in the years since The Legal Services Act came into force. As ever we welcome your feedback. Best regards, Clare Rodway Managing Director 0207 323 3230 [email protected] Press summary Issue: Spring 2014 Contents This issue Legal market innovation picks up speed London Borough of Lambeth considers ABS licences Virtual and online legal services storm the market Mergers among law firms gather pace ABS failures pile up ABSs go global New ABS insurance code Impact of Legal Services reform - debate Tips and snippets - Law Management Section roadshow, Birmingham SRA fines increase agreed This issue Almost 250 alternative business structures (ABSs) have been licensed since the Legal Services Act came into force and the new regulatory regime is certainly encouraging innovation across the legal services sector. More names that have joined the sector include Direct Line’s launch of a legal services arm with law firm partner Parabis Law; and big four accountancy firm Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC). Another consequence of legal market disruption is that mergers amongst law firms are gathering pace with 28 involving Britain’s 100 leading law firms in 2013, the highest annual number of such mergers ever. And shifts are happening in unexpected ways with new online legal services businesses sprouting up in the UK market.
