Prof. Dr. Y. Hakan Erdem August 2011, xi + 289 pages ABSTRACT This thesis is a study of the late Ottoman modes of perceptions and conceptions of the non-European world and their own Arab provinces. It is based on a systematic comparison of the Ottoman perceptions and conceptions with the European colonial discourses and its rhetorical modalities. The main argument of this study is that the Ottoman response to the Western discourses in the context of the non European world and the Ottoman Arab periphery were dualistic in nature. It was the internalization of the fundamental aspects of the European colonial discourses while resisting many aspects of it. The sources used in this study are the late Ottoman travelogues and memoirs. In the course of this study the main characteristics of the orientalist discourse as a fundamental part of the colonial discourses and the rhetorical tools of the colonial discourses are discussed in order to render a systematic comparison with the European discourses possible. Then, it was respectively followed by a systematic comparison between the Ottoman perceptions of the non-European world and the European visions on the non-Europe and between the Ottoman perceptions of the Arab periphery and the European visions on the Orient. This study claims that there were both convergences and divergences between the Ottoman and European perceptions and conceptions of the world around them; it investigates various factors that had contributed to these convergences and divergences. Bu inceleme Osmanlı algılamaları ve kavramsallaştırmaları ile Avrupa kolonyal söylemleri ve onun retorik unsurları arasındaki sistematik bir karşılaştırmaya dayanmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın temel argümanı Osmanlının Batılı söylemlere Avrupa dışı dünya ve Arab eyaletleri bağlamında verdiği yanıtın ikili bir doğaya sahip olduğudur. Bu yanıt Avrupa kolonyal söyleminin en temel veçhelerini içselleştirirken pek çoğuna da direnmiştir. Bu çalışmada kullanılan kaynaklar geç dönem Osmanlı seyahatnameleri ve anılarıdır. Bu çalışmada kolonyal söylemin temel parçalarından biri olan şarkiyatçı söylemin temel karakteristikleri ve kolonyal söylemin retorik araçları Avrupa söylemleri ile sistematik bir karşılatırmayı mümkün kılmak için tartışılmıştır. Bu tartışma sırasıyla Osmanlının Avrupa dışı dünyayı algılaması ile Avrupa dışına Avrupalı bakışlar ve Osmanlının kendi Arap çevresini algılaması ile Avrupa’nın doğu imgelemi arasındaki sistematik karşılaştırmalarca takip edilmiştir. Bu çalışma Osmanlı ve Avrupa algılamaları ve kavramsallaştırmaları arasında hem yakınlaşmalar hem uzaklaşmalar olduğunu iddia ettikten sonra bu yakınlaşmalar ve uzaklaşmalara katkıda bulunmuş unsurları incelemektedir.     What is the role of the library in an urban setting? Then what is the role of a library partnership project vis-à-vis its urban context? In this presentation I will present you BiblioPera: Beyoglu Research Centers Network. BiblioPera is a partnership project of 9 research centers & libraries located in Beyoglu district of Istanbul, which gets its inspiration from its neighborhood, and aims to contribute back to the urban culture it is rooted in. So, what is this urban setting? Historically called Pera, Beyoglu is one of the central districts of Istanbul. Once one of the 13 districts in Byzantine Constantinople, its historical significance began with the semi-autonomous Genoese trade colony’s establishment in the 12th century. Developing as a walled city and a port town, the district continued to hold onto its semi- autonomous structure under Ottoman rule for some time, but was gradually Otomanized and Islamicized. One of the fundamental factors in the district’s historical development was the opening of the French Embassy in the region in the 17th century, which were followed by other European embassies that gave the district a unique, international character. 1 The port and the embassies attracted the attention of Levantine merchants, artists, and journalists from all around the world, especially from the 19th century onwards, with the increasing integration of the Ottoman Empire to the world markets. Cultural institutions that developed in the area also reflected these global trends, as embassies serving as hubs of cultural & scientific gatherings, bookshops and libraries opened that would bring books and journals published in Europe as well as other corners of the Ottoman Empire, building up collection in the many languages of the Empire as well as French and English.

Devletin verdiği burs ile yurtdışına gönderilen Ekrem Akurgal, Sedat Alp, Halet Çambel, Muazzez İlmiye Çığ, Arkeoloji, Hititoloji gibi dallarda eğitim almıştır. Bu isimler yurda döndükten sonra Ankara Üniversitesi Dil Tarih Coğrafya Fakültesi bünyesinde kurulan Arkeoloji, Hititoloji gibi farklı bilim dallarında açılan kürsülerde kendi öğrencilerini yetiştirmiştir. Muhibbe Darga, II. Abdülhamit ‘in Başmabeyincisi Darugazade Mehmet Emin Bey’in torunu, Dr. Sait Bey’in kızıdır. 1921 doğumludur. İstanbul Üniversitesi Arkeoloji bölümü mezunudur. 1947’de doktor, 1965’te doçent ve 1973’te profesör unvanını almıştır. Karatepe, Gedikli, Değirmentepe kazılarına katılmış, Şemsiyetepe kazılarına başkanlık etmiştir. Muhibbe Darga, Prof. Th. Bosset, Prof. Dr. Bahadır Alkım ve Prof. Dr. Halet Çambel ile 122 birlikte Karatepe kazılarında, Hitit hiyerogliflerini çözümlemiştir. 1989-1991 kazı döneminde Eskişehir Müzesi ile beraber Dorylaion ören yerinde kazı başkanı olarak çalışmıştır. Darga, Türk Tarih Kurumu ve Alman Arkeoloji Enstitüsü üyesidir. Ülkemizin ilk kadın arkeologlarından Muhibbe Darga, 6 Mart 2018 tarihinde vefat etmiştir.     Trakya Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Dergisi, Cilt: 6, Sayı: 12, Temmuz 2016, s. 47‐66 LATE BRONZE AGE TEXTILE TOOLS FROM MAYDOS KİLİSETEPE IN GALLIPOLI (TURKEY) AND THEIR AEGEAN CONNECTIONS Derya YILMAZ* ABSTRACT: As one of the largest mounds of the Gallipoli Peninsula, Maydos Kilisetepe is situated on the European side of the Çanakkale Strait in the town of Eceabat in the Northern part of the Aegean Sea (Turkey) (Figure 1). Some important data regarding the Dark Ages and Late Bronze Age has been gathered in the excavations started in 2010. The paper presents preliminary analysis of the investigation of textile tools excavated in the context of the Late Bronze Age (LBA) in Maydos Kilisetepe. In the northern part of the Aegean, spindle whorls and loom weights have been the most remarkable findings associated with textile activities during the Bronze Age. The aim of this paper is to focus on spindle whorls and loom weights discovered at the site and to expand upon their Aegean Connections. The above‐mentioned textile tools have some similarities that indicate contact with the Aegean, Western Anatolia and the Balkans. The presence of the loom weights indicates that the warp‐weighted loom was used in textile production. The whorls from the Late Bronze Age settlement, which were used to get the desired yarn thickness and quality, have several shapes, types and weights. It is possible that the weaving production at the site was carried out for domestic purposes as a daily activity on a small scale during the Late Bronze Age.
