FINAL REPORT | 2019 WHAT IS NEWHOUSE? For 37 years, the Newhouse Architecture + Design Competition has helped foster the talents of Chicago area high school students by challenging them to design solutions to real world problems. Nearly 800 students worked on projects in seven categories. The competition opened on February 4 and concluded with a public showcase and awards ceremony on May 18. Participants’ work was juried by a panel of 35 architecture and design professionals and winners received certificates, cash prizes and gifts donated by architecture firms. Named after late Illinois Senator Richard Newhouse, the Newhouse program: • builds architectural and design skills • connects students to professional mentors • gives participants feedback from architects and designers • provides an opportunity for students to learn from each other • raises awareness of careers in architecture, engineering, construction and design • sets the bar high for excellence and achievement NEW LOCATION FOR 2019 For the first time, the competition was held at the Illinois Center, 111 E. Wacker, in conjunction with the inaugural year of the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) being located in the same building. More than 490 final projects were on display for public viewing and CAC guests had the opportunity to walk through the exhibition as part of their CAC experience. From Tuesday, May 14–Friday, May 17 the exhibition saw an average of 260 guests per day. While attending Lane Tech High School, I won three grand prizes in the Newhouse physical model division. This gave me confidence to pursue architecture as a career and led to internships at prestigious design firms (Landon Bone Baker and Holabird & Root). These internships helped me build and maintain relationships with multiple architects who guided me during my undergraduate studies at UIC. I continued working as a part-time intern at Holabird & Root throughout college and upon graduation, the firm offered me a full-time position. In other words, Newhouse helped me secure a job in architecture right after graduating college. This year I came back as a juror and it felt great being on the other side of the competition, reviewing the work of students who someday might end up following the same path I did. I am a HUGE fan of Newhouse and I will always be thankful for everything it allowed me to accomplish.” — ALBERTO BAHENA 2010 Newhouse Winner | 2019 Newhouse Juror Project Coordinator at Holabird & Root EXHIBITION & SHOWCASE Families, teachers and partners were invited to celebrate the Newhouse participants and award winners at a final showcase and formal awards ceremony on Saturday, May 18. Nearly 150 guests attended the event in the CAC’s Joan & Gary Gand Lecture Hall. CAC President and CEO Lynn Osmond was the keynote speaker and welcomed guests into the new Center. Winners were called up by division to receive their trophies, certificates and awards. Hosting the showcase in the lecture hall gave all the participants a chance to visit the Center—many for the first time. THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNERS! Harley Ellis Devereaux Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP Participating as a partner in the Newhouse Competition is a way to give back and to pass the torch to the next generation of architects and designers. To us, the Newhouse Competition is invaluable for opening doors into the fields of architecture and design for Chicago’s youth. Many students would not be exposed to opportunities in architecture if it weren’t for the competition, which brings much needed diversity to the field. We really enjoy getting to be a part of this inclusive and encouraging effort. Participating as a partner in the Newhouse Competition is a way to give back and to pass the torch to the next generation of architects and designers. It is also a wonderful experience to see the different ways youth—who understand Chicago’s built environment through their own lived experience of it—approach your challenge. You will learn from these students just as they learn from your challenge!” — ANGELA PAULDINE Director of Communication | Chicago Bungalow Association THANK YOU TO THE FUNDERS & PARTNERS WHO MAKE THE CAC TEEN EDUCATION PROGRAMS POSSIBLE JOHN & NANCY DICIURCIO LATENT DESIGN PENNY & BILL "IN MEMORY OF MELISSA ARNOLD MEMORIAL ANONYMOUS OBENSHAIN UNCLE BOB" BY DEAN ARNOLD ANN & RICHARD BARRY SEARS & SHARON & TODD CARR KATHY RICE WALBERT.
