Itineraries of Jewish Actors During the Firs
ABSTRACT Reconstructing a Nomadic Network: Itineraries of Jewish Actors during the First Lithuanian Independence !is article discusses the phenomenon of openness and its nomadic nature in the activities of Jewish actors performing in Kaunas during the "rst Lithuanian independence. Jewish theatre between the two world wars had an active and intense life in Kaunas. Two to four independent theatres existed at one time and international stars were often touring in Lithuania. Nevertheless, Lithuanian Jewish theatre life was never regarded by Lithuanian or European theatre society as signi"cant since Jewish theatre never had su#cient ambition and resources to become such. On the one hand, Jewish theatre organized itself in a nomadic way, that is, Jewish actors and directors were constantly on the road, touring from one country to another. On the other hand, there was a tense competition between the local Jewish theatres both for subsidies and for audiences. !is competition did not allow the Jewish community to create a theatre that could represent Jewish culture convincingly. Being a theatre of an ethnic minority, Jewish theatre did not enjoy the same attention from the state that was given to the Lithuanian National !eatre. !e nomadic nature of the Jewish theatre is shown through the perspective of the concept of nomadic as developed by Deleuze and Guattari. y 293 A Mediterranean Mayflower? Introducing Ronit Matalon TamaR S. HEss onit Matalon (b. 1959, Ganei Tikva, Israel) is a major voice in contem- porary Israeli fiction. After having written three novels (two appear in REnglish translation, with a third underway), one children’s book, a collection of short stories, a novella, and a volume of essays, Matalon has clearly established her reputation and has received an array of prizes and honors. One mark of her position in Israeli literature was exhibited by the scandal stirred after she published her novella Galu et pane’ha (Uncover Her Face; 2006), when the doyen of Hebrew literature Dan Miron and the editor of Haaretz’s literary supple- ment Benny Tzipper attacked the work and its author, while prominent scholars such as Galit Hasan-Rokem and Chana Kronfeld rose to Matalon’s defense.1 Beyond the contents of this wildly fantastic and ferocious urban legend of love and aggression, the very publication of a story by Matalon was clearly considered a cultural event to be reckoned with. If one is to highlight a striking or remarkable characteristic that readers note about her work, it is that Matalon cannot be pinned down. Two of the articles in this issue of Prooftexts, by Hannan Hever and Shimrit Peled, are devoted to a particular novel, Ze im ha-panim eleinu (The One Facing Us; 1995). Hever and Peled’s variant readings of it join previous diverging interpretations by Gil Hoch- berg,2 Deborah Starr,3 Nissim Kalderon,4 Avner Holtzman,5 Barbara Mann,6 and Batya Gur z”l,7 and the possible meanings are hardly exhausted. -

M. Lienhard In Memory of Klaus Wagner By Motti Lerner Klaus Wagner was a very dear friend, a wonderful teacher and colleague. Our collaboration started in 1988 when he produced my play KASTNER which dealt with the extermination of the Hungarian Jewish Community in 1944. I came to Heilbronn for the beginning of the rehearsals and was very touched by the honest commitment of Klaus and the actors to explore this horrible episode of the Holocaust. In 1996 Klaus himself directed my play AUTUMN which dealt with the immigration of European Jews to Palestine in the early 20's of the 20th Century. Klaus was a wonderful director. His soul connected to mine very deeply. Two years afterwards, in 1988, Klaus produced my play "The Murder of Isaac" – about the assassination of prime minister Yitzhak Rabin in Tel Aviv in 1995. This was a world premiere. All the theatres in Israel refused to do this play. Klaus was courageous and sensitive and he was able to connect to the horrors in the collective sub-conscious of the Israeli society, which are the basis of this play, more than most Israelis. In 2001 we collaborated on one of the most significant theatrical journeys I've ever been part of. As you know, the second Palestinian Intifada began in September 2000. Israelis and Palestinians killed each other on daily basis. In May 2001 Klaus and Madeleine came to Israel to initiate a theater project about the bloody conflict.
