~ Today’s Readings ~

Isaiah 49:1-7 L: A reading from Isaiah. Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The Lord called me before I was born, while I was in my mother's womb he named me. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, "You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified." But I said, "I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the Lord, and my reward with my God." And now the Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the sight of the Lord, and my God has become my strength—he says, "It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth." Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave of rulers, "Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you." L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Psalmody: Psalm 40:1-11 Please join in singing the congregational refrain:

Cantor: I waited, I waited for the Lord who stooped down to me, and heard my cry. God put a new song into my mouth, praise of our God. Refrain. Cantor: You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings, but an open ear. You do not ask for holocaust and victim. Instead, here am I. Refrain. Cantor: In the scroll of the book it stands written that I should do your will. My God, I delight in your law in the depth of my heart. Refrain. Cantor: Your justice I have proclaimed in the great assembly. My lips I have not sealed; you know it, O Lord. Refrain.

1 Corinthians 1:1-9 L: A reading from 1 Corinthians. Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind—just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you—so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God!

The Gospel Acclamation Please rise and join in singing the Gospel Acclamation’s Refrain:

Cantor: The Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us. To those who accept Him, He gave power to become children of God. Refrain.

John 1:29-42 D: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 1st Chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, "After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.' I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel." And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, "He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God." The next day John again was standing with two of his

disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Anointed ). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter ). D: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ.

For the grace of humility: that we may resist the temptation to puff ourselves up and instead use our gifts in faithful service of God and neighbor. Lord in your mercy…

For this congregation: that we might discern well the call of God in these days ahead and go together into a new day of faithful witness, loving proclamation, and vibrant hope. Lord in your mercy…

For the members of Congress: that God will give them wisdom, focus and courage in their task and success in bringing about good for all whom they serve. Lord in your mercy…

Church Council Meeting Highlights

Our 2020 Church Council held their first meeting of the year last Sunday afternoon, January 12, 2020. o We gathered with Prayer and spent time connecting with each other and sharing a little about ourselves, our experiences, and our daily life. o We focused on the Mission of the Church through a study of various Bible Passages, especially Matt. 28 (The Great Commission ~ Make Disciples, Teach, and Baptize), Matt 22 (Love The Lord, Love your neighbor), Ephesians 4 (Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving), Micah 6:8 (Do justice, act kindly, walk humbly with God). o We reflected on Trinity’s ministries and parish-life, noting the strong level of commitment and involvement of many parishioners and the healthy mix of ages, family-models, talents and interests which are present and shared at Trinity. o We discussed some directions, challenges, and opportunities which we will address through the upcoming months. o We reflected, from our own experiences, on the traits of effective and respected leaders. o We elected our Congregation’s Officers for the year: President: Wynn Leppert, Vice-President: Rick Smith, Secretary: Laura Vent, and Treasurer: Wayne Prescott. o We negotiated and organized the leadership teams for 2020’s 6 Standing Committees: Worship & Music: Mary Lorah & Jason Miller, Children & Youth: Wynn Leppert & Laura Vent, Adult & All-Parish: Alice Corle & Jennifer Klavuhn, Outreach: Toni Jackson & Carol Siegfried, Property: Wayne Hullihen & Rick Smith, Finance & Stewardship: Wayne Prescott & Janet Raines. o We acknowledged the diligent and faithful effort of the TLC-ELCA Study Team, and the 6+ months of listening, reading, researching, discussion, and prayerful deliberation which they have devoted to their work. o After much discussion on the scope, experiences and recommendation of the TLC-ELCA Study Team, we voted (13 to 1) to accept the Team’s recommendation and set the date of Sunday, February 16, 2020 (9:45 am) for a Special Congregational Meeting. At this meeting, the congregation will vote on the recommendation to leave the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and become a member-congregation of the North American Lutheran Church (NALC). o Following the meeting, we gathered to enjoy each other’s company and to share dinner together. o Please visit Trinity’s website to read the full minutes from this meeting.

Special Congregational Meeting Sunday, February 16, 2020; 9:45 am o Our Church Council has called a Special Congregational Meeting for Sunday, February 16, at 9;45 am, to act on their recommendation to leave the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and join the North American Lutheran Church (NALC). o This recommendation is based on the thorough and exhaustive work of the TLC-ELCA Study Team, which has discerned that Trinity’s parishioners and friends, and the Christian Fellowship & Ministries we share, will be best-served by leaving the ELCA and claiming membership in the NALC. o This recommendation comes after 6+ months of prayerful listening, study and discernment by the Study Team, which was comprised of 15 parishioners who encompassed and represented the fullness of Trinity’s rich and diverse membership: older and younger members… long-term and more-recent members… life-long Lutherans and those who’ve adopted Lutheranism more recently… working and retired members… families who are presently parenting children & youth in their homes and those who are empty-nesters. o Born out of a desire to locate Trinity in a good and faithful place, this recommendation will enhance and secure our congregation’s ability to continue sharing a strong Christian Witness among the families of the parish, and with the Bedford Community, through the years ahead. o We all agree… Parish Life, Worship, Learning, Fellowship and Service Ministries are strong and well-supported at Trinity. It is the team’s intention to create a new denominational affiliation which will support the congregation and keep us focused on Christ, welcoming, healthy, vital, family-like in nature, and Gospel-centered! o The Team has discerned that, guided by the NALC’s “4 Core Values”, Confession of Faith, Mission/Vision statement, and emphasis on Discipleship, Trinity’s ministries will be enhanced, more-faithful to traditional Lutheran Biblical-Confessional Teaching and Practice, and more reflective of the devout and orthodox faith-perspectives of the vast majority of the people of this congregation. o Church Council encourage parishioners to attend this significant meeting. o Resources will be added regularly to Trinity Web Site to provide relevant information about this recommendation as the date approaches. o Please, if you have any questions about the NALC, or the challenges and concerns which continued membership in the ELCA presents to our congregation, contact Pr Weinhold, Pr Short, or Wynn Leppert, our Council President. We would be more than happy to talk with you. o A meeting with Bp Michael of the Allegheny Synod, for discussion about the recommendation and upcoming vote, is set for Tuesday, February 4, 6:00 pm. This “consultation” is provided-for in the constitution and is open to all parishioners.
