The Capitol Lounge of CAC orchestra played beautifully, we 5:30 -7 pm had a first rate guest artist and a 03 WSO Time to Rejoice! very enthusiastic audience. I am Community Arts Center very proud of our musicians and 7:30 pm can't wait for the next concerts. February 2014 As the holidays are approaching, 10 Meet the Maestro a different type of music is ringing in my ears. From Capitol Lounge of CAC 5:30 -7 pm festive to solemn, entertaining to profound, it's definitely music for everyone. I was lucky to be in Dublin several 11 WSO Fantastic Tales years ago and visit the church where Handel's Messiah was Community Arts Center 7:30 pm premiered in 1742. I was moved to be in that place. Although it took one year until it was performed in London 23 Close Up Concert # 2 and other places, this piece become a staple of the holiday Mary Lindsay Welch Honors Hall, Lycoming season and one of the most performed oratorios of all College time. We have chosen selections from it including the 3:00 pm famous "Hallelujah" chorus accompanied by the wonderful 23 Williamsport Symphony Williamsport High School Choir and four excellent soloists Youth Orchestra (WSYO) from the area.

    1 The DRUMS of WILLIAM WEBB “CHICK” Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Feb. 16, 2021 2 Born: Baltimore, Maryland, Feb. 10, year unknown, 1897, 1902, 1905, 1907 and 1909 have been suggested (ref. Mosaic’s Chick Webb box) Died: John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, June 16, 1939 Introduction: We loved Chick Webb back then in Oslo Jazz Circle. And we hated Ella Fitzgerald because she sung too much; even took over the whole thing and made so many boring records instead of letting the band swing, among the hottest jazz units on the swing era! History: Overcame physical deformity caused by tuberculosis of the spine. Bought first set of drums from his earnings as a newspaper boy. Joined local boys’ band at the age of 11, later (together with John Trueheart) worked in the Jazzola Orchestra, playing mainly on pleasure steamers. Moved to New York (ca. 1925), subsequently worked briefly in Edgar Dowell’s Orchestra. In 1926 led own five- piece band at The Black Bottom Club, New York, for five-month residency. Later led own eight-piece band at the Paddocks Club, before leading own ‘Harlem Stompers’ at Savoy Ballroom from January 1927. Added three more musicians for stint at Rose Danceland (from December 1927). Worked mainly in New York during the late 1920s – several periods of inactivity – but during 1928 and 1929 played various venues including Strand Roof, Roseland, Cotton Club (July 1929), etc. During the early 1930s played the Roseland, Sa voy Ballroom, and toured with the ‘Hot Chocolates’ revue. From late 1931 the band began playing long regular seasons at the Savoy Ballroom (later fronted by Bardu Ali).

This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

    JAZZ WRITING? I am one of Mr. Turley's "few people" who follow The New Yorker and are jazz lovers, and I find in Whitney Bal- liett's writing some of the sharpest and best jazz criticism in the field. He has not been duped with "funk" in its pseudo-gospel hard-boppish world, or- with the banal playing and writing of some of the "cool school" Californians. He does believe, and rightly so, that a fine jazz performance erases the bound• aries of jazz "movements" or fads. He seems to be able to spot insincerity in any phalanx of jazz musicians. And he has yet to be blinded by the name of a "great"; his recent column on Bil- lie Holiday is the most clear-headed analysis I have seen, free of the fan- magazine hero-worship which seems to have been the order of the day in the trade. It is true that a great singer has passed away, but it does the late Miss Holiday's reputation no good not to ad• LETTERS mit that some of her later efforts were (dare I say it?) not up to her earlier work in quality. But I digress. In Mr. Balliett's case, his ability as a critic is added to his admitted "skill with words" (Turley). He is making a sincere effort to write rather than play jazz; to improvise with words,, rather than notes. A jazz fan, in order to "dig" a given solo, unwittingly knows a little about the equipment: the tune being improvised to, the chord struc• ture, the mechanics of the instrument, etc.

    Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021) I’ve been amassing corrections and additions since the August, 2012 publication of Pepper Adams’ Joy Road. Its 2013 paperback edition gave me a chance to overhaul the Index. For reasons I explain below, it’s vastly superior to the index in the hardcover version. But those are static changes, fixed in the manuscript. Discographers know that their databases are instantly obsolete upon publication. New commercial recordings continue to get released or reissued. Audience recordings are continually discovered. Errors are unmasked, and missing information slowly but surely gets supplanted by new data. That’s why discographies in book form are now a rarity. With the steady stream of updates that are needed to keep a discography current, the internet is the ideal medium. When Joy Road goes out of print, in fact, my entire book with updates will be posted right here. At that time, many of these changes will be combined with their corresponding entries. Until then, to give you the fullest sense of each session, please consult the original entry as well as information here. Previous studies in the literature emphasise modal and blues content within the album, overlooking the creative principle that underpins Kind of Blue – repetition and variation. Davis composed his album by Signifyin(g), transforming and recombining musical items of interest adopted from recent recordings of the period. This thesis employs an interdisciplinary framework that combines note-based observations with intertextual theory.
