INESLE Madrid 2019 SPANISH PROGRAM June 29Th - July 28 Th , 2019 Madrid - SPAIN INESLE Madrid 2019 SPANISH PROGRAM June 29th - July 28 th , 2019 Madrid - SPAIN INESLE Madrid Insti tute of Spanish Summer @ INESLE Madrid Summer @ INESLE www.inesle.com ’’Tuve un tiempo increible con INESLE Madrid. INESLE Madrid was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Over the span of a month, I was able to fully immerse in Spanish culture- whether it was cooking paella in the classroom or exploring Burgos with my host family. We went on fun excursions after school, such as the Camino de Santiago and visiting Toledo. In addition, my fluency in Spanish greatly improved during the trip, and I am excited to continue practicing at my high school. All of the teachers and Spanish students were encouraging and helped me become more proficient with my pronunciation and grammar. Most importantly, I met an incredible group of Americans and Spaniards that welcomed me with open arms. From day one, my host family took me in and treated me like a son. We went to many family celebrations and trips together. Furthermore, the students in the program were, funny enthusiastic, and kind. I will never forget the love, laughter, and memories that we all shared together during this incredible month. I certainly hope to return to Spain and the program in the future.’’ William T. • Salamanca Connections Bar Down Sit Or in the Res Nections on C Th a Cafe Bar Chinitas #18—Where at Victorio, (Market) on Plaza on (Market) Mercado Has Fresh Fruits
Salamanca Connections 385 meats, several salads, and varied raciones (daily, Calle Prior 4, tel. 923-260-092). PICNIC FOOD The covered mercado (market) on Plaza Mercado has fresh fruits and veggies (Mon 8:00-14:30 & 16:00-19:00, Tue-Sat 8:00-14:30 but may be open later on Tue in summer, closed Sun, on east side of Plaza Mayor). Supermarkets: A small El Arbol grocery, two blocks west of Plaza Mayor at Iscar Peyra 13, has just the basics (Mon-Sat 9:30- 21:30, closed Sun). For variety, the big Carrefour Market super- market is your best bet, but it’s a six-block walk north of Plaza Mayor on Calle del Toro (Mon-Sat 10:00-22:00, closed Sun, across from Plaza San Juan de Sahagún and its church—see map on page 372). Sandwiches: The Pans & Company fast-food sandwich chain is always easy, with a branch on Calle Prior across from Burger King (daily 10:30-24:00). OHFF T E BEATEN PAth Locals and students head just a bit outside the old town to hit the tapa/pincho scene along a main artery called Calle Van Dyck. It’s about a 20-minute walk or a short taxi ride from the edge of the old town, but it’s worth the effort as there are several cheap and tasty options. You’ll spend, on average, €2.50 for a caña (small beer), which comes with a small tapa. To get there on foot, go to the end of Calle del Toro, cross the main drag (Avenida de Mirat), and go up Calle Maria Auxiliadora; after crossing the wide Avenida de Portugal, take the third left onto Calle Van Dyck (see map on page 372).

  • Travel Guides Created with Real Tips from Over 2 Million Travelers. Madrid Is the Capital of Spain and the Country’S Political, financial and Cultural Heart
Discover Madrid Travel guides created with real tips from over 2 million travelers. Madrid is the capital of Spain and the country’s political, financial and cultural heart. It’s city in a perpetual state of renewal, where baroque palaces sit side by side with cutting-edge arts centers and historic tapas bars share the corner with trendy gastropubs. It’s classy in its architecture yet boisterous in its nightlife, traditional in its atmosphere yet forward-thinking its in cultural calendar. Madrid is a city that’s to be enjoyed with all five senses and, as you’ll soon find out, is also one that knows how to give visitors a warm welcome. “Madrid is "e ci# of li$rature.” Francisco Umbral. By European standards, Madrid is a modern city, with roots rarely dating back farther than the 17th century. Still, the narrow streets and plazas of the Madrid de Las Austrias district are enough to keep even the most enthusiastic history hounds busy for days. The Plaza del Oriente is the heart of historic Madrid and houses the Almudena Cathedral, the Opera and the Royal Palace, one of the largest on the continent. The nearby Plaza Mayor and the old-school La Latina neighborhood round out the historic center and are full of historic churches and street names that recall the days when the area was a Moorish settlement. Crossing the Puerta del Sol, the Barrio de las Letras offers a glimpse into Madrid’s considerable literary history while the Paseo de Recoletos provides an architectural feast with iconic buildings like the Cibeles Palace or the Puerta de Alcalá.

Each semester, Sally’s courses taught downtown in the art history building carried me into the heart of the city, a path that became fortuitous. I expected to be launched towards museum curation and am grateful for the influences—especially the walks downtown and hours writing papers on park benches —that shifted my attention towards the built environment and curating public spaces. Two years in the company of poets, architectural historians, musicians, ministers-to-be, and liturgically-minded people at the ISM has been invaluable.” Elizabeth is grateful for the ISM’s support, including conference travels and collaborative place-based projects. After graduation, she looks forward to serving on church building committees and working as a project manager of public space activation and design for downtown New Haven.
