A recent remark that the latter ‘strove in everything to be worthy of the Mother of God, to Whom the city was dedicated by St Constantine the Great in 330’ follows a deeply embedded pious narrative in which state and church intertwine in the city’s foundation as well as its subse- quent fortunes. Sadly, it perpetuates a flawed reading of the emperor’s place in the political and religious landscape. For a more nuanced and considered view we have only to turn to Vasiliki Limberis’ masterly account of politico-religious civic transformation from the reign of Constantine to that of Justinian. In the concluding passage of Divine Heiress: The Virgin Mary and the Creation of Christianity, Limberis reaffirms that ‘Constantinople had no strong sectarian Christian tradition. Christianity was new to the city, and it was introduced at the behest of the emperor.’ Not only did the civic ceremonies of the imperial cult remain ‘an integral part of life in the city, breaking up the monotony of everyday existence’. Hecate, Athena, Demeter and Persephone, and Isis had also enjoyed strong presences in the city, some of their duties and functions merging into those of two protector deities, Tyche Constantinopolis, tutelary guardian of the city and its fortune, and Rhea, Mother of the Gods. These two continued to be ‘deeply ingrained in the religious cultural fabric of Byzantium.. -

The launch problem for small payloads is nowhere as serious as it is for scientific and academic users, who cannot tap the purchasing power available to spacecraft funded by the military and large corporations. The options available for the researcher at a university who has an instrument or a spacecraft are limited, sometimes depressingly so. Dedicated vehicles are usually unaffordable, and secondary payload opportunities require meeting a host of requirements, from payload design to timing to integration, dependent on the needs of the primary payload. In this paper, the authors survey the options available and answer the question, “Where do I start?” Sources of potential rides, including NASA, military, commercial, and non-U.S. programs and organizations were surveyed. The results are presented here, along with recommendations for an improved process which, at low cost, could improve the “matchmaking” system and simplify the obstacle course faced by spacecraft and instrument developers today. However, the truth is that Cupid has arranged this himself, so that he can carry Psyche away as his own bride. 4. Her sisters become jealous of Psyche’s superior riches and treasures. 5. Psyche is torn between her love for and her faith in her husband, and the doubt and fear her sisters cause her to feel. She is unable to live with the uncertainty of not knowing the truth. 6. When Psyche sees that her husband is a beautiful youth, she feels too ashamed of her suspicion that she is about to plunge the knife intended for him into her own breast. However, her hand trembles and the knife falls. This faltering saves her own life, but also causes her to drip some lamp oil on Cupid, who sees that she has betrayed him and runs away. 7. This oral history with Donna Shirley is being conducted for the NASA Oral History Project in her offices at the University of Oklahoma. Carol Butler is the interviewer. Thank you very much for allowing me to come visit with you today. SHIRLEY: Okay. BUTLER: To begin with, I did take a look at your autobiography before coming, and it was very interesting. It did cover a lot about your early life and how you got interested in the space program. So I'd like to just expand on some of the things that were in your book. To begin with, when you first came to JPL [Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California] early on, were here at JPL, you worked on an early Mars mission— SHIRLEY: Right. BUTLER: —by doing some entry studies, I believe. SHIRLEY: Right. 17 July 2001 1 NASA Oral History Donna L. Shirley BUTLER: What were the similarities of that project with what you worked on later that was Mars-related, and then some of the differences? SHIRLEY: Well, the similarities of the projects were, this project was called Voyager. It wasn't the Voyager that went on the grand tour, but its name was Voyager, and it was going to be a really big project, bigger than anything that had flown and so on. It was going to land on Mars in 1971. One of the big differences was that in 1966 we didn't have a very good understanding of the thickness of the atmosphere. -

Acetylene is transported and stored in pressurised gas cylinders with a porous filling, dissolved in acetone. The cylinder must therefore be stored upright. It is produced from calcium carbide in acetylene generators or by the petrochemical sector. Main applications Multi-purpose fuel gas (autogenous welding and cutting process), chemical synthe- ses, etc. Safety Under unfavourable conditions, the energy-rich acetylene molecule can decompose without the involvement of oxygen, thereby releasing energy. Marble Sculptures from the Imperial Palace in Sirmium
UDC 904:73"652"(497.113) DOI: 10.2298/STA0656153P 153 IVANA POPOVI] Institute of Archaeology, Belgrade MARBLE SCULPTURES FROM THE IMPERIAL PALACE IN SIRMIUM Abstract. – Few fragments of marble sculpture have been found in the course of the archaeological excavations conducted in Sirmium between 2003 and 2005 at site 85 which is believed to be part of the imperial palace complex. The most important are two almost completely preserved heads of deities. The head of a young person made of milky white, fine-grained marble of exceptionally fine texture from Pentelicon was found under the Late Roman floor in room 7 of the residential structure. The sculpture, of exceptional quality, is from the second half of the 1st century and represents a deity, most probably Venus or Apollo. Another head made of Carrara marble, from the 4th century, was found in a secondary position and on the basis of its mural crown is identified as the Tyche of Sirmium. The chapters in attendance were NSS Atlanta (which supplied 6 members), Middle Tennessee Space Society (which supplied 2), and the host chapter, HAL5 (which supplied 11). Bill Wood from NSS Memphis was also scheduled to attend, but had to cancel at the last minute. Michael Gilbrook of the Metro Orlando Space Society, had expressed interest in participating, but had a work conflict. Though the meeting was staged with little notice and little planning, it was a huge success! 19 members of these chapters participated in two days of chapter management workshops and planning sessions at the Holiday Inn. Landis NASA Glenn Research Center mailstop 302-1 21000 Brook Park Road Cleveland, OH 44135 21 6-433-2238 geofrq.landis@grc. nasa.gov ABSTRACT Although the surface of Venus is an extremely hostile environment, at about 50 kilometers above the surface the atmosphere of Venus is the most earthlike environment (other than Earth itself) in the solar system. It is proposed here that in the near term, human exploration of Venus could take place from aerostat vehicles in the atmosphere, and that in the long term, permanent settlements could be made in the form of cities designed to float at about fifty kilometer altitude in the atmosphere of Venus. INTRODUCTION Since Gerard K. O'Neill [1974, 19761 first did a detailed analysis of the concept of a self-sufficient space colony, the concept of a human colony that is not located on the surface of a planet has been a major topic of discussion in the space community. There are many possible economic justifications for such a space colony, including use as living quarters for a factory producing industrial products (such as solar power satellites) in space, and as a staging point for asteroid mining [Lewis 19971. However, while the concept has focussed on the idea of colonies in free space, there are several disadvantages in colonizing empty space. Space is short on most of the raw materials needed to sustain human life, and most particularly in the elements oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen. -
