Dominated by bacteria, the microbiota also includes commensal populations of fungi, viruses, archaea, and protists. Unlike bacterial microbiota, which was extensively studied in the past two decades, these non-bacterial microorganisms, their functional roles, and their interaction with one another or with host immune system have not been as widely explored. This review covers the recent findings on the non-bacterial communities of the human gastrointestinal microbiota and their involvement in health and disease, with particular focus on the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease. Periodontal pathogenic bacteria like Porphyromonas gingivalis, that belongs to the complex net of oral microflora, exhibits a toxicogenic potential by releasing endotoxins, which are the lipopolysaccharide component (LPS) available in the outer cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria. Endotoxins are released into the tissues causing damage after the cell is lysed. There are three well-defined regions in the LPS: one of them, the lipid A, has a lipidic nature, and the other two, the Core and the O-antigen, have a glycosidic nature, all of them with independent and synergistic functions. Lipid A is the “bioactive center” of LPS, responsible for its toxicity, and shows great variability along bacteria. In general, endotoxins have specific receptors at the cells, causing a wide immunoinflammatory response by inducing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the production of matrix metalloproteinases. -

There are some reports about the risk of manipulating wild hedgehogs since they can be reservoirs of potential zoonotic agents like dermatophytes. The aim of this study was to describe the integument mycobiota, with special attention to dermatophytes of wild European hedgehogs. Samples from spines and fur were cultured separately in Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) with antibiotic and dermatophyte test medium (DTM) plates. Nineteen different fungal genera were isolated from 91 cultures of 102 hedgehogs. The most prevalent genera were Cladosporium (79.1%), Penicillium (74.7%), Alternaria (64.8%), and Rhizopus (63.7%). -

Although a large number of studies have shown that TPs have obvious neuroprotective and neuro repair effects, they are limited due to the low bioavailability in vivo. However, TPs can act indirectly on the central nervous system by affecting the “microflora–gut–brain axis”, in which the microbiota and its composition represent a factor that determines brain health. Bidirectional communication between the intestinal microflora and the brain (microbe–gut–brain axis) occurs through a variety of pathways, including the vagus nerve, immune system, neuroendocrine pathways, and bacteria-derived metabolites. This axis has been shown to influence neurotransmission and behavior, which is usually associated with neuropsychiatric disorders. Leveau 11.1 Introduction The term phyllosphere was coined by Last (1955) and Ruinen (1956) to describe the plant leaf surface as an environment that is physically, chemically and biologically distinct from the plant leaf itself or the air surrounding it. The term phylloplane has been used also, either instead of or in addition to the term phyllosphere. Its two- dimensional connotation, however, does not do justice to the three dimensions that characterise the phyllosphere from the perspective of many of its microscopic inhab- itants. On a global scale, the phyllosphere is arguably one of the largest biological surfaces colonised by microorganisms. Satellite images have allowed a conservative approximation of 4 × 108 km2 for the earth’s terrestrial surface area covered with foliage (Morris and Kinkel, 2002). It has been estimated that this leaf surface area is home to an astonishing 1026 bacteria (Morris and Kinkel, 2002), which are the most abundant colonisers of cuticular surfaces. Thus, the phyllosphere represents a significant refuge and resource of microorganisms on this planet. Often-used terms in phyllosphere microbiology are epiphyte and epiphytic (Leben, 1965; Hirano and Upper, 1983): here, microbial epiphytes or epiphytic microorganisms, which include bacteria, fungi and yeasts, are defined as being cap- able of surviving and thriving on plant leaf and fruit surfaces. Several excellent reviews on phyllosphere microbiology have appeared so far (Beattie and Lindow, 1995, 1999; Andrews and Harris, 2000; Hirano and Upper, 2000; Lindow and Leveau, 2002; Lindow and Brandl, 2003). -

In the absence of effective preventive treatments against most pathogens transmitted, vector control remains one of the most suitable strategies to prevent mosquito-borne diseases. Insecticide overuse raises mosquito resistance and deleterious impacts on the environment and non-target species. Growing knowledge of mosquito biology has allowed the development of alternative control methods. Following the concept of holobiont, mosquito-microbiota interactions play an important role in mosquito biology. Associated microbiota is known to influence many aspects of mosquito biology such as development, survival, immunity or even vector competence. Mosquito-associated microbiota is composed of bacteria, fungi, protists, viruses and nematodes. While an increasing number of studies have focused on bacteria, other microbial partners like fungi have been largely neglected despite their huge diversity. A better knowledge of mosquito-mycobiota interactions offers new opportunities to develop innovative mosquito control strategies. Here, we review the recent advances concerning the impact of mosquito-associated fungi, and particularly nonpathogenic fungi, on life-history traits (development, survival, reproduction), vector competence and behavior of mosquitoes by focusing on Culex, Aedes and Anopheles species.
