Il n'est pas un turfiste, sans distinction de classe ou d'opinion, qui n'ait ressenti cela à l'égal d'une catastrophe. C'était l'un des plus beaux chapitres de l'histoire du pur-sang français brutalement déchiré par la main de fer du conquérant. Les premières pages de ce chapitre remontent à l'origine même des courses de chevaux réglementées en France, aux lointaines années de la Monarchie de juillet. En 1836, à la première édition du Derby de Chantilly, le vainqueur de l'épreuve se vit gratifié de 5.000 francs en espèces et d'une coupe offerte par le baron Nathaniel de Rothschild et M. Henry Lee, l'historien des courses, nous dit que le journal La Mode se permit de railler doucement le donateur. Dix ans plus tard, ce même baron Nathaniel gagnait le prix du Jockey Club avec un poulain nommé Meudon qui profita heureusement d'un écart du favori Premier août, dont la victoire paraissait certaine à cent mètres du poteau.
