TUESDAY, 6 OCTOBER 2020 BOOK 1 DEBUT FOR HARAS D=OMBREVILLE CREAM OF THE CROP By Emma Berry ASSEMBLED FOR It is not an easy year to be making a Book 1 debut but it is an occasion that Matthieu and Solenn Gouesnard of Haras TATTERSALLS SHOWPIECE d=Ombreville have been looking forward to, despite the extra complications of the coronavirus situation. The couple launched their farm in the Pays d=Auge region of France in 2012 after Mathieu had completed stints in Ireland with Ballylinch Stud and as manager of Haras de Meautry. The following year saw their first draft at Arqana and it wasn=t long before Ombreville was associated with a top-class name as, in 2014, they sold subsequent Hong Kong dual Group 1 winner Pakistan Star (Ger) (Shamardal) to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for i180,000 at the August Sale. AWe have been thinking about coming to Newmarket for a couple of years and this year we had a really good crop of yearlings bred on the farm,@ says Matthieu Gouesnard. As marketing director of Europe=s largest sales house, it is clearly George=s job to say positive things about the most profitable three days of yearling trade but the sale=s statistics very much back up this claim. This year Tattersalls is coming off a hat-trick of Book 1 catalogues accruing more than 100 million gns each in turnover, reaching a record high of 106,503,000gns in 2018. While expectations of the 2020 yearling market have been adjusted downwards across the board, there was a genuine feeling of positivity at Park Paddocks on Monday from the predominantly masked vendors and potential buyers alike. AIt=s very much up to standard. I just wish the lead up to it had been a bit more conventional,@ George continued.
