  • Developmental Cross Training Repertoire for Musical Theatre
Developmental Cross Training Repertoire for Musical Theatre Women The repertoire suggestions below target specific developmental goals. It is important to keep in mind however that the distinguishing characteristic of musical theatre singing is the variability of tonal resonance within any given song. A predominantly soprano song might suddenly launch into a belt moment. A chest dominant ballad may release into a tender soprano. Story always pre-empts musical choices. “Just You Wait” from My Fair Lady is part of the soprano canon but we would be disappointed if Eliza could not tell Henry Higgins what she really felt. In order to make things easier for beginning students, it’s a good idea to find repertoire with targeted range and consistent quality as students develop skill in coordinating registration. Soprano Mix—Beginner, Teens to Young Adult Examples of songs to help young sopranos begin to feel functionally confident and enthusiastic about characters and repertoire. Integrating the middle soprano is a priority and it is wise to start there. • Read the Journal
Composite Journal 1 The following is a composite of journal made up of entries written by students in the 2008-2009 session of the Theater in London Class. The names, school years, and majors of the authors follow each entry. In some cases multiple entries for a single play are provided so as to allow the reader to see how different students responded to the same performance. Cinderella (2008). Dir. Melly Still. Based on Brothers Grimm Aschenputtel. Written by Ben Power and Melly Still. Lyric Hammersmith Theatre The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre has a reputation for unique and alternative Christmas shows, and this version of Cinderella certainly didn't disappoint. The play not only models itself after the original Grimm Brother's Aschenputtel but also incorporates elements of other traditional folk tales to add depth to the backgrounds of the characters. It is a darker and more introspective Cinderella than the Perrault-based Disney version many are familiar with, but it is by no means less tender. The depth of character development and psychological intricacy of this production are, in my opinion, its greatest strengths; though at times I felt the storytelling could have been less convoluted. I admired the Pulp-Fiction-esque timeline and its contribution to the dreaming landscape of the production, but I was occasionally distracted from the performance while trying to sort through the multiple myths and multiple timelines in my head. Another thing I admired about this production was the characterization of the step-sisters: they are not exactly sympathetic but are portrayed in a less harsh light than in most Cinderella tales I have read.

  • Low Male Voice Repertoire in Contemporary Musical Theatre: a Studio and Performance Guide of Selected Songs 1996-2020
LOW MALE VOICE REPERTOIRE IN CONTEMPORARY MUSICAL THEATRE: A STUDIO AND PERFORMANCE GUIDE OF SELECTED SONGS 1996-2020 by Jeremy C. Gussin Submitted to the faculty of the Jacobs School of Music in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree, Doctor of Music Indiana University December 2020 Accepted by the faculty of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Music Doctoral Committee __________________________________________ Ray Fellman, Research Director __________________________________________ Brian Gill, Chair __________________________________________ Jane Dutton __________________________________________ Peter Volpe December 10, 2020 ii Copyright © 2020 Jeremy Gussin iii Preface This project is intended to be a resource document for bass voices and teachers of low male voices at all levels. For the purposes of this document, I will make use of the established term low male voice (LMV) while acknowledging that there is a push for the removal of gender from voice classification in the industry out of respect for our trans, non-binary and gender fluid populations. In addition to analysis and summation of musical concepts and content found within each selection, each repertoire selection will include discussions of style, vocal technique, vocalism, and character in an effort to establish routes towards authenticity in the field of musical theatre over the last twenty five years. The explosion of online streaming and online sheet music resources over the last decade enable analysis involving original cast recordings, specific noteworthy performances, and discussions on transposition as it relates to the honoring of character and capability of an individual singer. My experiences with challenges as a young low voice (waiting for upper notes to develop, struggling with resonance strategies above a D♭4) with significant musicianship prowess left me searching for a musically challenging outlet outside of the Bel Canto aesthetic.
