  • Liminal Periods in the Udmurt Ritual Year
AADO LINTROP Estonian Folklore Archives, Tartu Liminal Periods in the Udmurt Ritual Year In our cultural space we usually imagine our lifetime as a journey. Wayfarer or pilgrim is common metaphor for us as travellers on the road of life. We have several stages or parts on our way and many mental milestones and turns for marking and separating them. Actually we can say that linear time of human life is also structured by the cyclic rhythms of year and day. These contain for us periods of different significance. Holy periods There are interim periods during a person’s lifetime as well as during the calendar year, which are characterised by a state of indefiniteness or being without borders due to lack of everyday boundaries. The times are open to both good and evil and are close to the supernatural. Mental boundaries and landmarks are part of our system of orientation. Without them, space would be homogeneous; there would be no difference between familiar and unfamiliar, good and evil, sacred and profane places. It is the same with time. The expressions good times, hard times, crazy times, fast times, holiday time, everyday time, childhood, youth, manhood etc. contain obvious judgements and defining of limits. Transitions from one time, one period of life, one status to another are kind of crossroads or fork in the road in time. As we well know from the mythologies of different peoples, crossroads are liminal places in space where homeless or restless spirits gather and miscellaneous magic will be done (Puhvel 1989). If liminality causes ordinary orientation to be unable to function, then usual behaviour will also turn out to be ineffective or unsuitable.

Signed Name of student: Meike Weijtmans Student number: s4235797 Weijtmans, s4235797/3 Abstract Celtic culture has always been a source of interest in contemporary popular culture, as it has been in the past; Greek and Roman writers painted the Celts as barbaric and uncivilised peoples, but were impressed with their religion and mythology. The Celtic revival period gave birth to the paradox that still defines the Celtic image to this day, namely that the rurality, simplicity and spirituality of the Celts was to be admired, but that they were uncivilised, irrational and wild at the same time. Recent debates surround the concepts of “Celt”, “Celticity” and “Celtic” are also discussed in this thesis. The first part of this thesis focuses on Celtic history and culture, as well as the complexities surrounding the terminology and the construction of the Celtic image over the centuries. This main body of the thesis analyses the way Celtic elements in contemporary adaptations of the Arthurian narrative form the modern Celtic image.

  • Test Your Faerie Knowledge
Spiderwick Tes t Your Activity Sheet Faerie Knowledge It wasn’t all that long ago that faeries were regarded as the substance of the imagination. Boggarts, Elves, Dragons, Ogres . mankind scoffed at the idea that such fantastical beings could exist at all, much less inhabit the world around us. Of course, that was before Simon & Schuster published Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You. Now, we all know that faeries truly do exist. They’re out there, occasionally helping an unwary human, but more often causing mischief and playing tricks. How much do you know about the Invisible World? Have you studied up on your faerie facts? Put your faerie knowledge to the test and see how well you do in the following activities. When you’re finished, total up your score and see how much you really know. SCORING: 1-10 POINTS: Keep studying. In the meantime, you should probably steer clear of faeries of any kind. 11-20 POINTS: Pretty good! You might be able to trick a pixie, but you couldn’t fool a phooka. 21-30 POINTS: Wow, You’re almost ready to tangle with a troll! 31-39 POINTS: Impressive! You seem to know a lot about the faerie world —perhaps you’re a changeling... 40 POINTS: Arthur Spiderwick? Is that you? • A Kobold Revolution This Is the First Ever Dungeons and Dragons Adventure to Be Published in Sapere Aude
A Kobold Revolution This is the first ever Dungeons and Dragons adventure to be published in Sapere Aude. Roleplaying games are not a storytelling medium that most people are literate in. What is a d20, and what do you do with it when your Game Master (GM) says “make a Charisma check?” Games are a rich storytelling medium, one that grants its players the ability to craft a completely unique story with them as the stars. By publishing this adventure in the pages of Sapere Aude, I hope to show to you that roleplaying games are not just entertainment, but a medium of literary escape, social bonding, team building, and creative thinking every bit as potent as a novel, a play, or a puzzle. A Kobold Revolution is not a typical Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) experience. It is not one in which a group of lawless adventurers enter a monster-infested dungeon, slaughter its inhabitants, and leave with their gold. This adventure provides the framework to tell the story of how five puny creatures stood up to a mighty tyrant, and how they prevailed and achieved their freedom— or failed, and were brutally suppressed. The outcome of the story depends on the actions of the players, and the players have total freedom in how they choose to act. This act of roleplaying invests the players deeply into the story and requires them to think cleverly about how their character would overcome the challenges placed before them. The “adventure module” is an unusual art form, because it is incomplete. In that way, it is similar to the script of a play—though instead of being filled with concrete dialogue and stage direction, it is filled with charts, numbers, maps, and read-aloud text that encourages the reader to paraphrase and improvise as frequently as they wish.

  • Patinkas to Go with Our Beautiful Engraved Sets of Five Gemstone Elemental Stones©
.!Qbujolbt!.! This Fact Sheet has been created by Patinkas to go with our beautiful engraved sets of five gemstone Elemental Stones©. About Elementals An Elemental is a spirit of nature, embodying four of the five elements of Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. Ether does not have a specific elemental spirit associated with it. All of the five elements are combined in different proportions to make up the whole of creation and all are, therefore, present in us. The energetic essence of elementals is quite unique and unlike anything else in the intangible realms. It is said that they are responsible for creating, sustaining, and renewing all life on Earth. When we work with the five elements and Elemental spirits, we connect with their realms and associated energies, benefiting from these vibrations and balancing those elements within ourselves. Water Undines are the elemental of water; the spirits of the water world. They hail from the West and their Archangel is Gabriel. One of the earliest references goes back to ancient Greece and a clan of nymphs called Oceanides who dwelled in the waters of the world. Mythology says that they were the daughters of Titan and his wife Tethys. They were well known to sailors and sea farers as generally benign spirits who could be called on for safe passage in troubled waters or to aid in navigation. To cross one, however, was to be avoided at all costs, as their wrath could whip up a destructive tempest. In European folklore, Undines were said to be the itinerant spirits of bereft women; wounded through unrequited or lost love.
