  • Clan STEWART of ARDSHIEL
Clan STEWART OF ARDSHIEL ARMS Silver with a green tree surmounted by a sword on the tip of which there is a crown. CREST A unicorn’s head argent, armed Or MOTTO Quhidder will zie (Whither will ye, What will you do) STEWART, STEUART, STUART. In Old English, the original sense of the word stiward (from older * stigeweard, 'sty- warden') was one who looked after the domestic animals; hence, by extension of meaning, one who provides for his master's table. The vowel change of y is due to the following w, and the earliest instance of the final letter of the name being t instead of d occurs in the Armorial de Gelre (c. 1370-88 ). By the eleventh century the word had come to mean one who superintended the household affairs of another, and was therefore a title of honor. In Scotland the steward was not only chief of the royal household, but his power extended to the collection and management of the crown revenues, to the administration of justice, and in time of war he took first J>lace in the army next to the king. (For development of meaning compare the names CONSTABLE and MARSHALL.) In early charters and kindred documents steward, seneschal (from a lost Gothic word * sinaskalks, meaning 'old servant'), and dapifer ('food bringer') are practically synonymous terms. There are four ways of spelling the surname Stewart, Steuart, Stuart, and Stewaf'd, besides the borrowed Gaelic form Stiubhard. The fame of Mary, queen of Scots (who spelled her , name Stuart, after the French manner, there being no w in that language) and of the Young Pretender has made the French form more popular.

They acquired estates in England after the Norman Conquest and Walter Flaad, the Steward, moved to Scotland when David I claimed his throne. He was created Steward of Scotland and granted extensive estates in Renfrewshire and East Lothian. He was one of the commanders of the army which defeated Somerled of the Isles in 1164. James, the fifth High Steward, swore fealty to Edward I of England, but later joined Sir William Wallace and on his death, Robert the Bruce, in the struggle for Scottish independence. Walter, the High Stewart, married Marjory, Robert’s daughter, and when Bruce’s son, David II, died childless, he was succeeded by Bruce’s grandson, Robert Stewart, who reigned as Robert II. The first Stewart king had many sons. His eldest, John, succeeded to the throne as Robert III; his third son, Robert, Duke of Albany, was Regent during the reigns of his father, his brother and his nephew, James I; his fourth son Alexander, Earl of Buchan, famed as the ‘Wolf of Badenoch’, was responsible for the destruction of the elegant cathedral at Elgin.

********************************************************************************* GENEALOGISTS FOR THE SCOTTISH CLANS by Robert D. McLaren 7810 Kincardine Court Alexandria, VA 22315-4025 (703) 971-6924 [email protected] 8 April 2000 Version 2000-3 © Copyright 2000 Robert D. McLaren The following list is a compilation of Clan Genealogists or Clan points of contact for genealogy (for the Scottish Clans and Family Associations). The amount of information available from these genealogists varies greatly, with some having extensive records. For example, the clan genealogist for Clan Scott maintains a database of all SCOTTs and is a coordinator of the SCOTT One Name Society. He has about 53,000 records on file dealing with more than 2,000 family lines. The clan genealogist/historian for Clan Barclay also is a coordinator for the BARCLAY One Name Society. She has about 19,000 BARCLAY/BARKLEY and collateral names on file dealing with 125 family lines. The Clan Morrison historian has a 6,000-name database of MORRISON families in the U.S. and Canada. Some clans have genealogy committees. When I learn about them I will include committee members in this listing. Some of these members only cover one or a few states. In these cases, I note the states that particular member covers. Also, some clan genealogists specialize in one surname of a clan. Clan MacKay, for example, has many surname genealogists. I am listing these surnames under the parent clan with a note (i.e., See also Mackie). The actual genealogist and his/her address will be listed under the surname (i.e., Mackie). For some clans, more than one society exists.
