DEDICATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND ENCOURAGEMENT OF ATHLETIC ENDEAVOUR

Calgary Booster Club In keeping with its “Dedication to the Development and Encouragement of Athletic Endeavour”, the Calgary Booster Club takes great pride in recognizing this year’s Founding Members, Past Sportsmen of the Year, Athletic Leaders, Calgary’s Athletes of the Year, and the 59th Sportsman of the Year Carol Kyle

1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Brent Gough On behalf of The Calgary Booster Club I am so very pleased to welcome you to the 59th Sportsman of the Year Dinner, and to thank you for making our special night part of your social calendar. By doing so you affirm the immense value that athletics have in our community, and you honour the specific individuals that are recognized this evening for their contributions, their leadership, and ultimately, their sportsmanship. While a healthy sense of competition is a natural part of human instinct, our ability to cooperate, work constructively with others, and interact fairly while doing so, is learned behaviour. Sport allows us to develop and nurture these abilities that are so vital to us as social creatures and, at the same time, give us a vehicle for exercising and honing our competitive spirit. With that competitive spirit in great supply, along with the ongoing involvement of countless volunteers, corporate sponsors, builders, and participants (both professional and amateur), Calgary really is a centre of sporting excellence, and The Calgary Booster Club is committed to acknowledging that excellence! Our acknowledgements to sponsors, partners, sports media, leaders, officials, coaches and athletes are not only meant to say, “thank you for what you have done” but also, “thank you for your commitment to Calgary’s athletic future!” In that sense, we encourage all of you to reflect on your own participation in our athletic community, and endeavour to grow that involvement wherever and whenever you possibly can. Certainly, with planning for the 60th Sportsman of the Year Dinner already underway, we hope you’ll join us again next year for that milestone, and would ask that you keep in mind, in the meantime, potential nominees for those awards. Collectively, you have the ability to inform our organization who the leaders of sport are in our city. You decide who deserves recognition for their accomplishments and years of service. Once again, please accept our most sincere gratitude for attending tonight’s presentation to express your congratulations to our Honoured Athletic Leaders, the Male and Female Athletes of the Year, and our 59th Sportsman of the Year. And not least of all, thank you for helping The Calgary Booster Club continue to “Develop and Encourage Athletic Endeavour.”

congratulations to all athletes

6 2012 SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR Carol Kyle The Calgary Booster Club considers it a privilege to honour Carol Kyle as our 2012 Sportsman Of The Year. For fifty- one years, Carol has been a motivator in Athletics, and the driving force behind the formation and the subsequent success of Officiating in Track and Field programs - not only locally, but also nationally and internationally as well. In 1958, Carol and her husband Doug started CALTAF, which was the first organized Track and Field Club in Calgary since the Second World War. Together they were administrators and coaches as they trained athletes, sponsored local meets, looked after officiating, and organized all travel arrangements. In 1969, they were transferred to , but returned permanently to Calgary four and a half years later. Carol now devoted her efforts into full-time officiating, and in 1973, she achieved her Grade 5 level as a Track and Field official, which is the highest level an official can achieve in this sport at the International level. As the top official in her area of expertise (which is the Vertical Jumps), Carol has worked both locally and provincially at over three hundred meets from 1969 until the present time. This includes club, age class and high school meets, as well as indoor and outdoor provincial championships and summer games. During these years, Carol also found time to offer clinics for officials, and to help young athletes develop an understanding of the rules in their events, so that they could achieve greater success. Carol’s expertise and rapport with athletes and other officials landed her in top positions at over thirty high profile national and international meets over the years. These meets range from Canadian Championships to the , the , the World University Games, the World Indoor and Outdoor Championships, the World Police and Fire Games, and the . She is still actively officiating, and Carol will be part of the officiating team at the Canadian Senior Track and Field Championships and the Canadian Olympic Trials, which will be held in Calgary on June 28th to 30th, 2012. One of the highlights of her long and distinguished career was the Olympic Games which were held in in 1976. As a high jump official, she witnessed first- hand, Canadian Greg Joy winning the Silver Medal with a jump of 7 feet 3 ¾ inches when he beat out the heavy favorite, of the U.S.A. The American ended the competition by winning the Bronze Medal, with the Gold Medal going to the Polish high jumper. Carol was the Officials’ Chairman for Alberta for four years, which included the year of the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton in 1978. She was given the job of upgrading, training, and obtaining enough qualified officials for these games, which she did. She also instituted a Recognition Program for Alberta officials with shirts, badges and jackets, which proved to be a huge success. Before getting involved with officiating, Carol was an outstanding athlete for over ten years in the high jump. She was a high school provincial record holder in Ontario, and she was the Canadian Open High Jump Champion and record holder in 1953 and 1954.

During her illustrious career as an Athlete, Builder and Official in Track and Field, Carol has received many honours over the years. The ones she is most proud of include: • Ontario Outstanding Athlete of the Year Award in 1954 and 1955 • Club Builder Award from Calgary Track & Field Club in 1969 • Alberta Official of The Year for Athletics in 1989 • Calgary Booster Club Honoured Athletic Leader Award in 1997 • Canadian Official of The Year in Athletics and Wall of Honor Award in 1998 • Inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame as a Builder in 2000. Carol has been happily married to Doug for 54 years, and they are the proud parents of a daughter Susan, who lives in England, and a son, Bob, who lives in Calgary. She and Doug have three wonderful grandchildren. Carol has also found time to be an active volunteer in St. Peter’s Anglican Church for over 37 years, holding many different positions, as she continually works with both children and adults. Her hobbies include golf as a member of Earl Grey Golf Club, sewing, and her Home Craft business. In summary, Carol has devoted fifty-one years as a volunteer without pay to Athletics as both a builder and an official. She has made a significant contribution to amateur , and for these reasons and many more, the Calgary Booster Club is proud to honour Carol Kyle as our 59th Sportsman of the Year.

In the 1990’s, the City of Calgary implemented a “pay-per-use” policy on public tennis courts. City Council abandoned the “pay-per-use” policy as a result of his presentation. In 2003, Rolf was responsible for starting the Racquet Central Tennis Tournament in Calgary. He has worked in this capacity at nearly every competition hosted in Calgary since 1988. Ron served as a member of the Olympic Organizing Committee in 1988. In the 1990’s, he became actively involved in competitive Ski Jumping when his children started in the sport. The Calgary Jumps were the only active competitive jumps in Canada. The sport was struggling, and he quickly became aware of the challenges facing it. Ron served on the Altius Nordic Board, was the Chair of this Board from 1996 to 2000, and he was the Chair of Ski Jumping Canada from 2000 until 2004. Ron has been an active member of the Canadian Olympic Committee and the International Ski Federation (FIS) since 2000. He was instrumental in developing two successful proposals acted upon by the FIS. The first one was to create a women’s Continental Cup series, followed by a women’s event at the WorldJ unior Championships in 2005. The second one was to include Women’s Ski Jumping in the World Championships in 2009, and in the next Olympics in 2014. Ron has worked tirelessly with parents and coaches to rebuild the sport of Ski Jumping in Calgary, setting a goal to bring the facilities at Canada Olympic Park up to their full potential. Ron Read is a passionate advocate of the sport of Ski Jumping, and the Calgary Booster Club is very pleased to recognize him as an Honoured Athletic Leader for 2012.

greg steiner - Football Greg Steiner has made numerous contributions to sport in the city of Calgary over many years. When he started teaching at St. Francis High School in Calgary, he spent four years as an Assistant Coach, followed by eighteen years as the very successful head coach of the Junior Football Team. He coached for seven years without losing a league game. His team won ten City Championships, and they were silver medallists eight times. Most importantly though, Greg’s players had the utmost respect for him as their coach. Greg has also spent thirty years as a leader in his community. He has devoted fifteen years of his time as a volunteer working on plans to build the Genesis Centre of Community Wellness, and seeing it through to fruition. This massive project is a new recreation and sports facility, which opened in January of this year. Building the Genesis Centre involved obtaining government and municipal support, fund-raising, building partnerships, engaging the community in this project, overseeing the design and the construction of the facility, and membership on its Board of Directors. In his letter of support for this nomination, Alderman Jim Stevenson indicated that Greg is a person who is willing to see a project through to its conclusion. 21 22 The Calgary Booster Club and Talisman Centre

The Calgary Booster Club has been a vital part of the city since it was founded in 1951. They were instrumental in pushing forward the successful bid for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary. That landmark achievement alone ensures the Calgary Booster Club a prominent place in Calgary’s history books. “One of the Calgary Booster Club’s greatest achievements was being the catalyst for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic games, while Talisman Centre was the catalyst for the 1983 Western Canada Summer Games,” says Jeff Booke, Chief Operating Office of Talisman Centre.

The Booster Club volunteers are hard at work year-round to develop and encourage athletic endeavour in the city. The Booster Club famously recognizes the Calgary Sportsman of the Year, Honoured Athletic Leaders as well as female and male athletes of the year. They also support and recognize athletic excellence in High School sports, and provide a number of generous athletic grants and awards.

The Calgary Booster Club’s passion and dedication to athletic endeavour make them a perfect fit with Talisman Centre, and the two organizations have enjoyed a long and mutually beneficial friendship. Since 1987, Talisman Centre has been the home of the Calgary Booster Club’s Sports Wall of Fame which recognizes recipients of the Club’s awards. In 2012, the Sports Wall of Fame will be reintroduced as a “living” digital display at Talisman Centre and will also feature the 1988 Winter Olympic torch and 2010 Winter Olympic torch. This digital display will provide the Calgary Booster Club with a new public portal to promote its events, awards, and celebrate athletic achievement.

From providing funds and volunteers for athletic events, to the awarding of scholarships and grants to high school, and post-secondary programs, as well as recognizing outstanding contributions made by Calgary athletes and athletic leaders, the Calgary Booster Club is one of this city’s most valuable organizations.

Talisman Centre is proud to have a close relationship with the Calgary Booster Club and looks forward to celebrating athletic endeavour with them for many years to come.

25 26 HENRY VINEY TROPHY WINNER Christine Nesbitt Christine’s summer training in 2010 was difficult because she was hit by a car and suffered a broken elbow. Nevertheless, in 2011 at World Cup events, she collected five gold medals at the 1000m distance, four at 1500m, one in Team Pursuit, and two bronze medals in 1500m. Christine ended the year as the 1500m World Cup Champion and the World Cup Runner-up in the 1000m. At the Allround Championships, she won the 500m and placed second overall. At the World Single Distance Championships, she won gold medals in Team Pursuit and in the 1000m distance, making her the World Champion at 1000m for the third successive year. The highlight of her year was being crowned the World Sprint Champion. Christine is a native of London, Ontario. At the age of twelve, she chose short-track speed skating over hockey. By age fifteen, she was the Ontario Junior Short Track Speed Skating Champion. In the following two years, Christine was ranked the top Ontario female junior and senior short track speed skater. Christine desperately wanted to attend McGill University so that she could train at the National Short Track Speed Skating Centre. That was the year that both grade 12 and grade 13 students graduated from high school. Although her marks would have allowed her into McGill the previous year (and in subsequent years), she was not accepted. She decided upon the University of Calgary, and she switched to long track speed skating. As with her short track career, her development as a long track speed skater proceeded rapidly. One and a half years after taking up the sport, Christine earned a spot on the 2004-2005 National Team. The following years saw Christine win many World Cup medals, World Cup Championships, World Championships, and Olympic medals. Her achievements were recognized by being selected as the Canadian Female Athlete of the Year in 2009.

The Calgary Athlete of the Year Award was started in 1958 by the Calgary Press Radio TV Sports Club. The award was given to the top male or female athlete in Calgary until 1987 when the Henry Viney Trophy was instituted for the top female athlete of the year. The Calgary Booster Club has coordinated the recognition program since 1990 after the Sports Media Club folded. The Calgary Booster Club honoured its first athlete at the 1956 Sportsman of the Year Dinner - a young football star named Normie Kwong, who was Alberta’s Lieutenant-Governor from 2005-2010. PAST WINNERS Henry Viney Trophy This award, named in honour of Henry Viney, the long-time Sports Director of CFCN Radio- Television, was established in 1987 by the Calgary Sports Media Club. 30 SCOTT-MAMINI AWARD WINNER Jon Cornish Jon was born in New Westminster, B.C. He attended high school in Burnaby and participated in basketball, track and field and football. He was selected as British Columbia’s provincial high school football player of the year in 2001. After high school, Jon attended college in Kansas. In his senior year at Kansas, he rushed for 1,457 yards, a single-season Kansas record. Jon Cornish signed with the Calgary Stampeders in 2007, spending most of his time with the special teams unit. In 2008, he served as the primary backup at running back and scored his first professional touchdown against his hometown BC Lions in the last game of the regular season. His greatest contribution came on special teams as he led the team with twenty-one tackles. Jon was a part of the 2008 Grey Cup Championship Team. After suffering an injury during the 2009 pre-season, Jon returned to action in Week 4. Once again he served as primary backup at running back and was valuable on special teams. In 2010, his fourth season with the Stampeders, Cornish established a number of career highs and earned the Stampeders’ nomination for the League’s Most Outstanding Canadian award. His 7.3 yard average per rush was tops in the CFL among running backs. Despite not making his first start of the past season until Week 13, Cornish led the Stampeders in rushing, was first among all CFL running backs in rushing touchdowns, tied for the league in total touchdowns, and earned West Division All-Star recognition. In addition to his excellent work on offence, Jon tied for second on the club with thirteen special-team tackles and returned eight kick-offs for 167 yards. He was named the CFL’s Canadian player of the week three times and the top offensive player once. For the second year in a row, Jon was the Stamps’ nominee for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian award. 42 The Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association was established in 1913 to provide competitive athletic opportunities for students in Calgary high schools. The Association believes that the interscholastic athletic program, as a recognized part of the school program, is educationally sound and will enhance the physical, mental, emotional and social development of young people. Annually, 10,000 student athletes participate in twelve sports including football, cross country, soccer, volleyball, diving, wrestling, basketball, swimming, rugby, track and field, badminton and field hockey. The CSHSAA is unique in many ways, but is recognized nationally for its belief that the amalgamation of Calgary’s two educational systems into one common athletic association is in the best interests of the residents of Calgary. As such, the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District have worked together harmoniously for decades. As well, the partnership with the Calgary Booster Club over the past five decades has been beneficial to hundreds of student athletes. Since 1956, 380 student-athletes have been honoured for their academic and athletic excellence. The Calgary Booster Club has also awarded 230 maximum participation scholarships to student -athletes for a total investment of $290,250. The Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association congratulates the Calgary Booster Club on their tremendous success and appreciates their involvement in high school athletics.

Calgary Sport Council congratulates the Honoured Athletes, Athletic Leaders and 2012 Sportsman of the Year, Carol Kyle.

Originally from Drumheller, Andrea is enrolled in Open Studies at Mount Royal. Andie-Lynn Gingrich - Grade 9 Andie-Lynn Gingrich can light up a room. Her energy and enthusiasm can inspire even the drowsiest of classmates. She is a strong leader who respects and encourages the input of others. She offers to explain difficult concepts to those struggling during class and is forever volunteering to get involved in school initiatives. Her philanthropic pursuits go beyond our school community she has been part of the ice patching brigade for Winsport. She has volunteered at several skating competitions in various roles. Currently she assists with coaching the CanSkate program in B.C.. Warm, kind, and compassionate are words that best describe Andie-Lynn. NSS is a better place for all of us because Andie-Lynn is a student here. As Andie-Lynn is away training and competing in Vancouver we would like to thank her mother Kim Lewis who is here to accept the honour on her behalf. Sydney Van der Voort - Grade 10 How does Sydney van der Voort display citizenship? It is really not one big event where Sydney demonstrates her caring, but the many little ones she does that all add up. At school, she has a presence and way of being that other students notice and look up to. When asked, she openly shares her beliefs and values while honouring perspectives that differ from her own. Beyond school and her alpine ski racing, she is actively involved in her church youth group and spring soccer. Most weekends she isn’t away skiing she can be found volunteering her time in the Children’s Ministry at Church by leading or assisting with the nursery, toddlers or grade school – wherever she is needed most. With a quiet caring heart she is always willing to do what is required whether it be getting up at 5:30 a.m. on Boxing Day to serve breakfast at Inn from the Cold, or to help coach the K1 skiers when the coach is injured while she herself is recovering from a concussion, or making sure she spends time with her special needs cousin who needs an understanding friend, or giving the young Nancy Greeners a piggyback ride in the lodge while parents try to collect their scattered equipment, or demonstrating soccer skills to younger players when the coach needs some help, or donating to the Calgary Dream Centre, or collecting coins to fill a baby bottle for the Calgary Pregnancy Care Centre, or listening to her fellow athletes and supporting them when they are having a tough day. Although quiet and unassuming by nature, Sydney is someone you soon learn will never say no if someone needs help. She demonstrates a determined and loving heart. It is my honour to present the 2011 Calgary Booster Club Citizenship Award for grade 10 to Sydney van der Voort. Kaitlyn Verge - Grade 11 Kaitlyn Verge is one of the most respectful and hardworking students at the National Sport School. Her positive attitude toward her teachers and fellow students stems from an intrinsic awareness of the goodness to be found in every person she meets. Kaitlyn has a strong understanding of social issues and world events, and she is passionate about doing something about them. In fact, when she did a project on Nigeria last year she was upset to see the environmental impact of their oil and gas operations. She wrote letters to Shell and to various groups trying to affect change. In addition, Kaitlyn likes being a mentor for younger kids. She takes the time to talk to them. Many of them stated that, “she talks to us and treats us like people”. She is always willing to help and will go out of her way if she sees someone needing a hand. While Kaitlyn has shared her experiences with younger people through her involvement with the Speaker’s Bureau, the place where she especially demonstrates her caring is in her presence at the sport school and on the ski hill with her teammates. She has a quiet and powerful presence of dignity and integrity that is hard to describe but instantly apparent when you meet her. It is my honour to present the 2011 Calgary Booster Club Citizenship Award for grade 11 to Kaitlyn Verge.

50 NATIONAL SPORT SCHOOL Calgary Booster Club Citizen Award Recipients 2010 - 2011 (continued from page 50)

Jayden Starnino, Bob Midyette Citizenship Award Grade 12 Jayden is being awarded the Citizenship Award. He is a mature and responsible student, brother and member of his community. Jayden leads by example both socially and academically. He strives to excel and maintain a healthy balance at school and in his sport. These qualities make him an excellent role model for his peers and his younger siblings. Jayden is known in his community and at school as being approachable, warm and friendly and always willing to lend a hand. Over the years at NSS, this has included explaining concepts to his classmates and helping his teachers with various tasks. Jayden has a passion for the environment and has been a member of Greenpeace. He has willingly volunteered to assist neighbours and friends doing odd jobs whenever he knew they needed assistance. Jayden also ran his own ski tuning business from the age of twelve years old with many return customers. Jayden has a real interest in the Buddhist concepts of mindfulness, awareness and happiness. He thinks the Dali Lama is a great guy and he has read and re-read “Happiness”, by Thich Nhat Hanh. Jayden has always been a young man who followed his own path and didn’t worry about current trends or what others might think was cool. Jayden did his first Big Mountain Ski Competitions last year and received a Gold and Silver in two out of the three comps he entered. He loves the challenges and competitive freedom of style in these competitions. His first love is skiing as he counts the days until he can be on snow again. He plays guitar, loves the trampoline and mountain biking.

55 CALGARY BOOSTER CLUB Virtual Wall of Fame Project The Calgary Booster Club continues to seek funding to install a “living wall” Sports Wall of Fame at Talisman Centre. As envisioned, a TV monitor will display photos and biographies of past Sportsmen of the Year, Athletes of the Year, and Honoured Athletic Leaders. It will profile annual recognition programs such as the Senior High School Athlete Scholarship winners and the Art Smith Amateur Sport Legacy Fund recipients. The 1988 Olympic Torch will be remounted along with a 2010 Olympic Torch donated by Ernie McCullough, a founding member of the Booster Club. This torch has special significance because Erie, who represented Canada as a track and field athlete at the 1948 London Games, 62 years later carried the 2010 torch as part of the cross Canada tour. In 1987 the “Sports Wall of Fame” was opened at Talisman Centre providing a complete history of the best in Calgary athletes and sports leaders. Unfortunately, by 1998 there was no longer space for new names and the display was physically deteriorating. The Sports Wall of Fame and the accompanying 1988 Olympic Torch Display was removed when Talisman Centre replaced the iconic tent roof and undertook major interior renovations.

CALGARY BOOSTER CLUB 1988 Olympic Torch Display The Calgary Booster Club passed a motion on September 11, 1978 to look into the possibility of Calgary hosting the 1988 Olympic Winter Games. On February 13, 1988, Harry Maubert, representing the Calgary Booster Club, used the torch to officially light the cauldron at the Olympic Plaza. Petro Canada, sponsor of the cross-Canada torch relay, presented this torch to the Calgary Booster Club on June 6, 1988 in recognition of the club’s major contribution to the XV Olympic Winter Games. The torch will be on display in conjunction with the Calgary Booster Club Virtual Wall of Fame at the Talisman Centre.

57 CALGARY BOOSTER CLUB Sportsman’s Wall

Since 1954, the annual Sports men’s Dinner has been dedicated to the person(s) selected Calgary Booster Club Sportsman of the Year. The Sportsman has customarily been one of the city’s athletic leaders who has greatly contributed to the local sport scene. To further recognize these outstanding Calgarians, the Booster Club maintains a permanent pictorial showcase of all Sportsman of the Year honourees. The Sportsman of the Year Wall was unveiled at the ATCO VIP Centre at Canada Olympic Park on March 25, 1990 and at the time of the unveiling, contained the pictures of the Calgary Booster Club’s 45 award recipients. As each year’s winner is announced, their picture is added to the display.
