LECTURES LECTURE 2008 Prof. ELIAS JAMES COREY Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology Harvard University The Isis Pharmaceuticals Lectures in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences at UCI were established in 2007 through the generosity of Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Carlsbad, CA, USA. This series of lectures will feature distinguished scientists who have made pioneering contributions to organic, bioorganic or medicinal chemistry. Synthetic Methods” Thursday May 8, 2008 Crystal Cove Auditorium UCI Student Center 3:30 PM Departments of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences Professor Elias James Corey is regarded by many as the premier organic chemist of our time. In 1990 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his theory of retrosynthetic analysis, which changed the way scientists think about synthesis planning and strategy. His studies for over five decades have covered virtually all fields of organic chemistry and have had a profound impact on biochemistry and modern medicinal science. These include the development of the fundamental logic of chemical Prof. Elias James Corey synthesis, the invention of numerous highly practical synthetic methods, encompassing organometallic chemistry, catalytic asymmetric reactions, mechanistic and fundamental 1990 Chemistry Nobel Laureate insights into bond forming processes, the synthesis of complex bioactive compounds, and the use of computers for designing synthetic routes. His academic career started in SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM 1951 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, immediately after earning his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1959, he moved to Harvard, 3:30 Introductory remarks and held the Sheldon Emery Professorship. He is currently an emeritus professor of Stephen Hanessian organic chemistry with an ever-active research program. He is the author of nearly 1,000 scientific publications and the mentor of over 600 outstanding chemists, including 3:35-3:55 “RNA –based Drugs and Drug Targets: A Brief Overview” over 150 university professors and an even larger number of researchers in the Dr. Eric E. Swayze pharmaceutical and chemical industry. Over the years, Prof. Corey has received more Vice President, Medicinal Chemistry than 20 honorary degrees and over 50 national and international prestigious awards, Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. such as the A.C. Cope Award (1976), the Tetrahedron Prize for Creativity in Organic Chemistry (1983), the Wolf Prize in Chemistry (1986), the National Medal of Science 3:55-4:00 Homage to Professor E. J. Corey from the President of the United States (1988), the Japan Prize in Science (1989), the Roger Adams Award (1993), and the Priestley Medal (2004) to mention a few. In 2002, the ACS recognized him as the most cited author in chemistry. 4:00-5:00 "Studies on Catalytic Enantioselective Synthetic Methods" Professor E. J.
