The telescope has a 24-inch lens to focus the light, and like all such instruments brings light of different colours to a focus at slightly different distances from the lens. The best-focus position for each colour is determined by placing a mask with a circular pattern of holes over the lens, and images through red, green, and blue filters are taken at several focus positions; the mask produces separate images of the star in each out-of-focus colour, with the colour in best focus being more concentrated towards the central spot. Hence, each ‘petal’ of the `flower’ is Castor’s spectral image, dispersed by the telescope lens. PLENARY SPEAKER Tuesday, October 3rd 14:30 - 15:30 Main Auditorium Prof Molly Stevens, Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College London, UK Molly M. Stevens Molly M. Stevens is currently Professor of Biomedical Materials and Regenerative Medicine & Research Director for Biomedical Material Sciences in the Department of Materials, Department of Bioengineering and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London. She was born in Nottingham, UK and received her PhD from The University of Nottingham in 2000, working within the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. She conducted her postdoctoral research within the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT in the labs of Prof Robert Langer, where she co-developed innovative techniques for the regenerative of bone and other tissues. She joined Imperial College in 2004 and was promoted as Professor in 2008. Research in the Stevens Programme focusses on designing and developing innovative bio-inspired materials for applications in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering and biosensing. Molly Stevens’ research has been recognised by over 20 major awards, such as the 2016 Clemson Award for Basic Research from the Society for Biomaterials, the EU40 Prize for best material scientist under the age of 40, a listing in The Times as one of the top 10 scientists under 40 and the European Life Sciences 2014 Research Group of the Year Award, amongst many others. She was recently elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Academy for Engineering and delivered the Clifford Paterson Lecture for the Royal Society in 2012. She has previously served on the Board of Reviewing Editor for Science and is Associate Editor of ACS Nano. -

Over the past year, we have had to put some of our HIV research on hold, learned to do our research in different ways using different tools, to communicate with each other in virtual formats, and to apply the many lessons in HIV research, care, and community advocacy to addressing the COVID-19 pandemic . Scientists and community stakeholders who have long been engaged in the endeavor to end the epidemic of HIV have pivoted to support and inform the unprecedented progress made in battle against SARS-CoV-2 . -

ANNUAL REPORT 2014 HUMAN FRONTIER SCIENCE PROGRAM The Human Frontier Science Program is unique, supporting international collaboration to undertake innovative, risky, basic research at the frontier of the life sciences. Special emphasis is given to the support and training of independent young investigators, beginning at the postdoctoral level. The Program is implemented by an international organisation, supported financially by Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the European Union. Since 1990, over 6000 awards have been made to researchers from more than 70 countries. Of these, 25 HFSP awardees have gone on to receive the Nobel Prize. Written Evidence Submitted by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) (C190073) 1. UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) operates across the whole of the UK with a combined budget of more than £8 billion, bringing together the seven research councils, Innovate UK and Research England. 2. Our vision is for an outstanding research and innovation system in the UK that gives everyone the opportunity to contribute and to benefit, enriching lives locally, nationally and internationally. Our mission is to convene, catalyse and invest in close collaboration with others to build a thriving inclusive research and innovation system, that connects discovery to prosperity and public good. 3. UKRI welcomes the Committee’s inquiry and its ongoing work meeting with leading researchers and public health officials working on the response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK and internationally. Our submission to this inquiry provides an overview of UKRI’s response to the pandemic, from launching rapid response calls to shifting existing resources, capabilities and expertise to focus on COVID-19 research. While our submission highlights several research projects most relevant to the inquiry, there are many more examples to draw upon beyond what we have captured in our written evidence. Summary 4. UK’s research and innovation is pivotal in the fight against COVID-19, and in leading the recovery from the global crisis. UKRI responded quickly to rapidly deploy funding for research to tackle the emergence of COVID-19 and has already allocated £70m to new research and innovation projects in institutes, businesses and universities across the UK. In addition to this, more than £81m worth of existing UKRI grants have been partially or totally repurposed to focus on contributing to the national effort. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. – Diana Borsa Impact Statement In a nutshell, the current body of work has focused on the problem of a learning agent sit- uated in a environment, trying to learn behaviour policies that maximise different reward signals, corresponding to different tasks in this environment. We would argue that thisis a common scenario for many decision making systems in the real world. Reinforcement learning, as a modelling paradigm, has already been shown to successfully tackle complex decision making problems. Our contributions here stem from two key observations: a) in general, we would like our agents to achieve more than one goal in a given environ- ment; b) a lot of the methods underlying even the single task setting, involve building, incrementally, multiple prediction problems that enable improvements in the agent’s be- haviour. Thus, an agent’s journey to an optimal value function, can naturally be cast asa multitask prediction problem. The only difference between a) and b) is whether or not, one varies both the policy and the reward structure. -

Designed and produced by the Communications Office of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia Printed by GAM www.ibecbarcelona.eu Welcome to IBEC’s 10th anniversary symposium The Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia is a leading-edge multidisciplinary research centre based in Barcelona that conducts interdisciplinary research at the frontiers of engineering and life sciences in order to generate new knowledge by putting together fields like nanomedicine, biophysics, biotechnology, tissue engineering and the applications of health information technology. IBEC was formally set up in December 2005 by the Departments of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise and Health of the Government of Catalonia, the University of Barcelona and the Technical University of Catalonia, but it was in 2007, with the first IBEC Bioengineering and Nanomedicine Symposium, when IBEC started to disseminate its research results. In just ten years IBEC has positioned itself among the best research centres in bioengineering at an international level. The major results obtained by IBEC’s research groups, which can be summarized in the quality of scientific publications, the 11 prestigious ERC Grants developed at the institute, the coordination of many international consortia, the development of a high number of cooperative agreements with hospitals and biotechnological and medical technology companies, and the generation of spin-offs. Today IBEC is recognized as a leader in mechanobiology, nano-characterization at molecular and cellular levels, nanomedicine for diagnostics, biomaterials for regenerative medicine, and biomedical signals. IBEC’s excellence has been acknowledged by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through its Severo Ochoa Excellence Programme, which recognises IBEC as one of Spain’s top research centres at the highest international level in terms of cutting-edge research, training, human resources management, outreach and technology transfer. -
