Fortunately, Mr. H. NisHINo has eollected a new speeies of this genus, C. nisltinoi, for the first record of the genus from Japan. I wish to express my sineere thanks to Drs. [I]. KuRoDA and T. HABE, for their kindness of affording me with the Formosan gpecimens and literature. Hearty thanks are also due to Mr. H. NIsHINo, who kindly placed his materials at the author's disposal. Clyathopama W. & H, BLANFoRD, 1861 Cyathopoma nishinoi n. sp. (Figs. 1---2) Shell minute, conic, umbilicate, thin, yellowish eorneous, translueent. Whorls 41,Si in number, each whorl very eonvex with a deep suture. Protoconch ll6 whorls, smooth, dark corneous and the teleoconch whorls ornamented with strong spiral lines, 5 at penultimate whorl and 5 to 6 at body whor}. Spiral lines eroded en the base of the body whorl, exeept for the umbilieal area. Periphery rounded. Aperture circular, peristome simple, thin and cling to the body whorl. Operculum round, yellowish white, calcareous, multispiral and sunken to the central on the outer surface. Measure"ien・ts: Height 1.4mm, breadth 2.0rnm (Holotype, NSMT-Mo 57453) Height 1.3mm, breadth 1.9mm (Paratype, MINATo Colleetion No. 20413) Type Locality: Mt. Kadoyama, Fukuregi, Amakusa-eho, Amakusa-gun, Kumamo- to-ken, Kyushu. Re・maTks: This species is closely related to Cyathopoma taitvanicu・m PILsBRy & HIRAsE, 1905, from Formosa (=Taiwan), but is distinguished from it by smaller size and lacks in spiral lines on the base of the body whorl. They are an ideal group for monitoring site specific environmental impact assessment studies because of their limited migration patterns. Majority of them remain undiscovered or under described, partly because of insufficient exploration and partly because of their often minute sizes (Emberton, 1995). Unfortunately, for the last 75 years or so, in South India, no attention has been paid for this important group with exceptions of some localized reviews and publications [(Tonapi and Mulhekar, 1963; Tonapi 1971; Subba Rao and Mitra, 1979, 1986; Madhyastha et ai., 2003, 2005; Mavinkurve et ai., 2004a, (in press); Sandhya et ai., (submitted)]. The works of Ramanan (1900) and Sathyamurthi (1960) are the preliminary source for those interested in the terrestrial molluscs of Tamil Nadu. This work is in continuation of the checklist for the land snails of the southern states that is being fonnulated (Mavinkurve et al., 2004b). STUDY AREA Situated on the southeastern side of the Indian peninsula, the state of Tamil Nadu has an area of 130,058 sq Ian. The landmass of the state can be divided into two natural divisions: (i) The eastern coastal plain (ii) The hilly region along the north and the west. Along the whole length of the western part, at a distance from the sea varying from 80 to 160 km runs the Western Ghats range, a steep and rugged mass averaging 1220 metres above the sea level.

Zoological Studies 47(5): 591-604. The Cyclophoridae is the dominant group of operculated terrestrial snails in East Asia. The group consists of 4 subfamilies and about 300 species currently arranged in 34 genera. They occupy a range of habitats and exhibit considerable morphological diversity. Members of Cyathopoma are tiny white cyclophorid snails occurring in East Asia, Madagascar, and the Seychelles. The phylogenetic relationships of Cyathopoma are uncertain. In order to investigate the relationships among cyclophorids and within East Asian Cyathopoma species, we sequenced part of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene from 31 species of 9 genera of cyclophorids. We constructed phylogenetic trees using Neighbor-joining, Bayesian, and maximum-likelihood analyses. Phylogenetic relationships based on mitochondrial (mt)DNA sequences suggested that Cyclophorus, Cyclotus, Leptopoma, and Platyrhaphe are monophyletic. Combined with molecular and radular data, we concluded that Cyathopoma and Cyclotus are only distantly related. Cyathopoma iota has been considered to be a controversial member of this group. Through molecular and radular data, we found Cya. iota to be closer to Cya. taiwanicum than to Cya. micron, and concluded that Cya. micron, Cya.

Over the last decade, more than 900 collection lots consisting of more than 4000 Leptopoma specimens have been obtained in Sabah and deposited in BORNEENSIS at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Access to this collection gave us the opportunity to examine the geographical variations in shell forms and the phylogenetic relationship of Leptopoma species in Sabah.

The results based on mtDNA sequences suggest that the genera Cyclophorus, Cyclotus, Leptopoma, and Cyathopoma are monophyletic while the traditional genus Japonia appeared polyphyletic and then J. zebra should be moved to the new genus Pilosphaera. In addition, Pilosphaera yentoensis n. sp. and Japonia boonkioensis n. sp. are described in this paper. Four species from this assemblage belong to the land caenogastropod superfamily Cyclophoroidea. Three of these are assigned to genera with Recent representatives in Southeast Asia and are described as new species: Cyclophorus hangmonensis Raheem & Schneider sp. nov. (Cyclophoridae: Cyclophorini), Alycaeus sonlaensis Raheem & Schneider sp. nov. (Cyclophoridae: Alycaeinae) and Tortulosa naggsi Raheem & Schneider sp. nov (Pupinidae: Pupinellinae). These fossil species represent the earliest records for their genera and are thus of great value for calibrating molecular phylogenies of the Cyclophoroidea. The fourth species is represented only by poorly preserved fragments and is retained in open nomenclature in the Cyclophoridae. While extant Cyclophoroidea have their greatest diversity in Tropical Asia, the oldest fossils described to date from the region are from the Late Pleistocene.

Pseudoglessula (Kempioconcha) liederi (Mts.) and Cecilioides pergracilis Conn. are new to the Malawi list. Furthermore a number of taxa already known to occur in Malawi has been treated in (more) detail. These notes may serve as prolegomena for a new checklist of the terrestrial molluscs of the country. New studies on the terrestrial molluscs of Malawi were initiated in the late seventies of last century culminating in a preliminary checklist in 1984 (Van Bruggen & Meredith, 1984) and an additional first interim report appeared nine years later (Van Bruggen, 1993). Now, fifteen years later, although progress has been slow, it is time to start updating the available data. More Malawi material has been received at the Leiden Museum.
