ISLAND WISHES FOR 2018 Very early Monday morning we begin a new year – 2018. Humor us old people for a minute…We recall when it was hard to remember to write 1980 on our checks. Now it’s “What’s a check?” and “Wow! You were alive in 1980?” While the calendar is an artificial method of marking time and civ- ilization has used a variety of methods since we came out of the caves, setting the beginning of a new year is a useful artifice. It provides a new beginning, a blank slate, the opportunity to reflect on the past and plan to improve in the future. Anyone who doubts that has never tried to get a treadmill at their gym in January. Western civilization has been using the Gregorian calendar for 435 years now, but Julius Caesar is the guy who set the beginning of the New Year as January 1 in 46 B.C. But the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions has been around for 4,000 years. We have the Babylonians to thank for that and New Year’s celebrations, though their New Year came in mid-March when crops were planted. Even if we don’t make resolutions and research shows that 55% Your Hometown Newspaper for over 17 years of us pass on that tradition, the New Year offers a chance to reflect on the past and plan for the future. What do we wish for our Island in 2018? Bob Layfield, Publisher • A safe year for all pedestrians, bicyclists, construction workers and mo- [email protected] torists that use our roadways. Segment 1 is done from Crescent Street to Lovers Lane with wide sidewalks on both sides of the street, new curbs and roadway. Segment 1 has a narrow right-of-way so there was no room to have bike lanes, as there will be with the other segments. The travel lanes in Segment 1 have markings known as sharrows, meant to indicate that vehicles and bicycles share the lane. The center lane drainage works though there were problems with the pavers cracking that seem to have resolved through some teamwork between the manufacturer and construction team. The downtown area continues to look a bit desolate, so what’s happening with the TPI project? If we only had a dollar for every time we’re asked that one... But this is a free paper, so here goes… TPI’s downtown development remained in the headlines in 2017, with a second plan under consideration at the beginning of the year. That version included the use of the Seafarer’s property, but without several of the more contentious features that had drawn criticism. A debate between Lee County and the Town of Fort Myers Beach as to which entity should weigh in first ensued, finally resolved when County Commissioners told the Town that they still needed the Seafarer’s parcel for storage during the Estero Blvd projects. The TPI project then went back to the drawing board, to emerge in the spring with a third plan. December 29th, 2017 The Island Sand Paper FortMyersBeach.news Page 13

WATER QUALITY

Living on an island, just downstream from the mouth of the Caloosahatchee that carries Lake Okeechobee releases, how could water quality not be a big issue? In some good water news, of which there is usually a drought, the Florida Legislature agreed in 2017 to fund a southern Lake Okeechobee reservoir championed by Senator Joe Negron. The plan was scaled back to include only state owned land and willing sellers, which will lead to a smaller reservoir. In surprising news, the planning of that reservoir is moving along well. It will not stop the need to send water down the rivers, but will help lower the amounts sent East and West as more water will go South. Meanwhile concern about not getting enough water during the winter dry months remains an issue as that raises the salinity in the river Page 16 The Island Sand Paper FortMyersBeach.news December 29th, 2017 Birds of SWFL
