With her bulky, bright-red headphones on, this historical Viennese a Playground café has become her ideal living room and office. This is where the trained art historian, originally from Saarbrucken, writes her articles for the Austrian newspaper Der Standard, which she’ll soon join on as their permanent fashion editor. For Immediate Release: September 21, 2015 Press Contacts: Natalie Raabe, (212) 286-6591 Molly Erman, (212) 286-7936 Adrea Piazza, (212) 286-4255 In the Aftermath of the Emanuel Nine In the September 28, 2015, issue of The New Yorker, in “Blood at the Root” (p. 26), David Remnick travels to Charleston, South Caro- lina, and explores the city’s resistance and resilience in the aftermath of the June murders of nine people at Emanuel A.M.E. Church. Like many people in Charleston, Pastor Norvel Goff, Sr., at Emanuel, says that members of the community remain in shock and immense pain “(‘post-traumatic-stress syndrome’ was the term they often used), but they were alive, and feeling joy in their pews—and at their jobs, and at their Bible classes and dinner tables and Sunday strolls—because of the depth of their spiritual lives,” Remnick writes. “This was the way of a church that had been around since the days when enslaved black men and women, in a quest for safety, community, dignity, co- hesion, empowerment, ritual, and peace, broke from white churches and built ‘invisible’ institutions, sometimes called ‘hush harbors.’ ” The black church, even as it has changed, aged, and, in some places, lost ground to mega-churches, Remnick writes, remains a powerful insti- tution of black life, and of black political influence. The families of the Emanuel Nine shocked the nation with their message of forgive- ness at the killer Dylann Roof ’s hearing the day after the murders. That forgiveness is hard to understand for anyone “who hasn’t had to cope with that kind of powerlessness,” James H.

  • The Literature of Kita Morio DISSERTATION Presented In
Insignificance Given Meaning: The Literature of Kita Morio DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Masako Inamoto Graduate Program in East Asian Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Professor Richard Edgar Torrance Professor Naomi Fukumori Professor Shelley Fenno Quinn Copyright by Masako Inamoto 2010 Abstract Kita Morio (1927-), also known as his literary persona Dokutoru Manbô, is one of the most popular and prolific postwar writers in Japan. He is also one of the few Japanese writers who have simultaneously and successfully produced humorous, comical fiction and essays as well as serious literary works. He has worked in a variety of genres. For example, The House of Nire (Nireke no hitobito), his most prominent work, is a long family saga informed by history and Dr. Manbô at Sea (Dokutoru Manbô kôkaiki) is a humorous travelogue. He has also produced in other genres such as children‟s stories and science fiction. This study provides an introduction to Kita Morio‟s fiction and essays, in particular, his versatile writing styles. Also, through the examination of Kita‟s representative works in each genre, the study examines some overarching traits in his writing. For this reason, I have approached his large body of works by according a chapter to each genre. Chapter one provides a biographical overview of Kita Morio‟s life up to the present. The chapter also gives a brief biographical sketch of Kita‟s father, Saitô Mokichi (1882-1953), who is one of the most prominent tanka poets in modern times.

  • Introduction
Introduction anne grImes had a gift for collecting songs—partly because she knew how and where to find them. “Everybody thinks you find folk music in the hills; you don’t . it’s in people’s heads,” she told a reporter for the Columbus Citizen- Journal in 1971 before performing at Governor John Gilligan’s Inau- gural Gala at the Ohio Theater in Columbus, Ohio. Born into a pio- neer Ohio family in which music had been important over the gen- erations, Anne Grimes felt a kin- ship with the traditional singers she discovered. As she told the reporter: “In the folk music field, the technical term is ‘informants’; I prefer to think of the people as contributors.” During the height of her col- lecting and performing career in the 1950s and early 1960s, Anne Grimes sang several times at the The cover of the Columbus Dispatch Sunday Magazine, annual National Folk Festival February 17, 1952: Anne Grimes and recorded on Folkways. She with her five children—Mindy also became an expert in the lore (2), Mary (4), Jennifer (6), Sara and techniques of the plucked (10), and Steve (12)—in front or lap dulcimer (also referred to of the Jonathan Alder cabin as the mountain or Appalachian west of Columbus. Prugh courtesy of the dulcimer), and the Anne Grimes Columbus Dispatch collection of these rare folk in- struments—now housed at the Smithsonian Institution—ranks among the nation’s finest. But much of her time and energy was devoted to collecting hundreds of songs and ballads that she then performed in concert-lectures with the general theme of Ohio history through song.

  • TREE of CLUES: a Packet for Popheads
TREE OF CLUES: a packet for popheads Written by Kevin Kodama 1. In one song by this artist, a background clicking noise slows down as she sings “I found another way / To caress my day”. One of this artist’s videos is a single shot of her as both a giant goddess and tiny dancers that slowly zooms out. A track by this artist that she described as “a medieval march through the destruction of a relationship” laments “I never thought that you would be the one to tie me down”. This artist asks “Why don’t I do it for you” in a video that showcases her pole-dancing skills, and she explained a part of her name as “a selection of letters that sounded... masculine and strong”. For ten points, name this artist who released “Cellophane” for her 2019 album MAGDALENE. ANSWER: FKA twigs (accept Taliah Debrett Barnett) 2. This song’s heavily ad-libbed bridge includes the James Brown-inspired lyric “Good God! I can’t help it!”. In the music video for this song, the artist crawls on the ground sporting white polka dotted lipstick. This song begins with a series of tongue clicking and a breathy “yeah” along with some funky guitars. The video for this song uses pink, purple, and blue lighting in a scene where the artist runs between a male flirt and Tessa Thompson. This song’s artist describes herself as “an emotional sexual bender”, which is a nod to her pansexuality. For ten points, name this top r/popheads track of 2018, a Janelle Monae song that was the lead single for the album Dirty Computer.
