Craig Allan Staff Writer n September 11, Prime Minister Justin OTrudeau met with Governor General Julie Payette to declare dissolving of parliament and the official start of the 2019 Canadian Federal Election campaign. As Canada enters another federal election, the world has changed significantly since the previous election four years earlier. 2015 was a very different time when Trudeau beat Progressive Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper to lead the country. The concept of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union was still unlikely, and the prospect of Donald Trump being president of the United States was still laughable cannon fodder. Four years on, and those ideas are now reality. With a changing world and changing ideas, Canada’s political parties will be tested on how they can galvanize the Canadian voters into electing their party to possibly lead the next four years. When Trudeau won back in 2015, he was the leader of change. Squeaky clean compared to his nine-year predecessor in Harper. However, with four years as Canada’s leader, Trudeau’s reputation is not as shiny as it once was. Between the SNC-Lavalin scandal, his trip to India, and his government backing the twinning of the Trans Mountain Pipeline, things have changed for him. With Trudeau’s less than stellar reputation, the rise of populism, and more right-leaning governments established in the United States, Britain , Brazil, and other major democracies, Trudeau hopes to stem the tide; advertising himself as a steady ship and pointing to the policies he has made that have helped improve the lives of Canadians over the last four years. Trudeaus main competition will be Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer. Scheer claimed the Conservative Party leadership after winning a tight race between him and leadership hopeful Maxime Bernier, who would later defect from the party and start his own, the People’s Party of Canada. Scheer is trying to place himself as the alternative to Trudeau’s policies. However, many are worried about Scheer on issues like abortion and gay rights —due to his statements on gay marriage in 2005 and Bui Billy by Photo his statement to CityNews on abortion that comprehensive climate action plans that ground for his party this time around it analyst Éric Grenier’s Poll Tracker indicates “[he] will not be bringing forward motions include committees and funding for low could spell disaster for the party. • The Literature of Kita Morio DISSERTATION Presented In
Insignificance Given Meaning: The Literature of Kita Morio DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Masako Inamoto Graduate Program in East Asian Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Professor Richard Edgar Torrance Professor Naomi Fukumori Professor Shelley Fenno Quinn Copyright by Masako Inamoto 2010 Abstract Kita Morio (1927-), also known as his literary persona Dokutoru Manbô, is one of the most popular and prolific postwar writers in Japan. He is also one of the few Japanese writers who have simultaneously and successfully produced humorous, comical fiction and essays as well as serious literary works. He has worked in a variety of genres. For example, The House of Nire (Nireke no hitobito), his most prominent work, is a long family saga informed by history and Dr. Manbô at Sea (Dokutoru Manbô kôkaiki) is a humorous travelogue. He has also produced in other genres such as children‟s stories and science fiction. This study provides an introduction to Kita Morio‟s fiction and essays, in particular, his versatile writing styles. Also, through the examination of Kita‟s representative works in each genre, the study examines some overarching traits in his writing. For this reason, I have approached his large body of works by according a chapter to each genre. Chapter one provides a biographical overview of Kita Morio‟s life up to the present. The chapter also gives a brief biographical sketch of Kita‟s father, Saitô Mokichi (1882-1953), who is one of the most prominent tanka poets in modern times.

  • Exploring the Cultural Phenomenon of Language in Japanese Band Names
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE 135 Hey! Say! JUMP: Exploring the cultural phenomenon of Language in Japanese band names Lee, Jackson Koon Yat & A.R.Woollock Abstract In Japan, English-language usage in the public sphere, from advertising through popular music, general media, and signage runs a gamut of uses and accuracies from the intentional and unintentional misuse, to the irreverent and the occasional sublime. This paper sets out to explore and record the use of English in the naming of Japanese pop and rock groups. The central thesis of this essay being that Japanese pop and rock group names fall into five distinct categories or phenomena: meaningless names using language other than Japanese, arbitrary names from second languages, bastardised 'other' language derivatives, Romanised Japanese, and mixed Japanese and other language. This grouping ignores those names rendered in kan-ji, which although acknowledged, are not specifically within the scope of this research. By deconstructing and analysing this use, it is hoped to contribute to discourse in the fields of both culture (cultural appropriation), and language (language use and accuracy). Keywords Japanese popular music, Japan, English Language, Wa-sei ei-go, Japanese culture [email protected] 136 Lee, Jackson Koon Yat & A.R.Woollock Introduction Glancing through the racks in your local Japanese music shop or rental store, the native speaker of English will be greeted with an array of Japanese band names which span the spectrum of use and comprehension from the expected and the mundane, through to the questionable and the incomprehensible.
