Available online at www.worldscientificnews.com WSN 117 (2019) 175-182 EISSN 2392-2192 SHORT COMMUNICATION Variability in fish catch rates associated with Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly (Niño 3.4 index) in the West of Java Sea Mega Syamsuddin*, Sunarto, Lintang Yuliadi, Syawaludin Harahap Department of Marine Science, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Universitas Padjadjaran, Jalan Raya Bandung-Sumedang KM 21 Jatinangor Sumedang Indonesia *E-mail address: [email protected] ABSTRACT The remotely derived oceanographic variables included sea surface height anomaly (SSHA), sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll-a (Chl a) and fish catches are used as a combined dataset to understand the ocean climate variability and further addresses their relations with the fish catches in the West-Java Sea. Fish catches and remotely sensed data are analyzed for the 5 years datasets from 2010- 2014 and emphasized the differences of climate conditions during El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. Here, we demonstrate the prominent annual variation of two species small pelagic fish catches (Euthynus affinis and Scomberomorus commerson) and one demersal species (Netuma thallasina) as representative of dominant catch in the region. Small pelagic catches had significant increment during El Niño compared to during La Niña events. Changes in oceanographic conditions during ENSO events resulted in perceivable variations in catches, with an average catches of 839.6 t (E. affinis) and 273,7 t (S. commerson) during El Niño. During La Niña event catch rates were reduced with an average catches of 602.6 t (E. affinis) and 210.3 t (S. commerson). During the La Niña event was less favorable for small pelagic catches. -

Scientific paper Barbatula leoparda (Actinopterygii, Nemacheilidae), a new endemic species of stone loach of French Catalonia by Camille GAULIARD (1), Agnès DETTAI (2), Henri PERSAT (1, 3), Philippe KEITH (1) & Gaël P.J. DENYS* (1, 4) Abstract. – This study described a new stone loach species in France, Barbatula leoparda, which is endemic to French Catalonia (Têt and Tech river drainages). Seven specimens were compared to 49 specimens of B. bar- batula (Linnaeus, 1758) and 71 specimens of B. quignardi (Băcescu-Meşter, 1967). This new species is char- acterized by the presence of blotches on the belly and the jugular area in individuals longer than 47 mm SL and by a greater interorbital distance (35.5 to 41.8% of the head length). We brought moreover the sequence of two mitochondrial markers (COI and 12S, respectively 652 and 950 bp) of the holotype, which are well distinct from all other species, for molecular identifications. This discovery is important for conservation. Roberts Research Associate, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT. - Celestichthys margaritatus, a new genus and species of Danioinae, is described from a rapidly developing locality in the Salween basin about 70-80 km northeast of Inle Lake in northern Myanmar. Males and females are strikingly colouful. It is apparently most closely related to two danioins endemic to Inle, Microrasbora rubescens and "Microrasbora" erythromicron. The latter species may be congeneric with the new species. The new genus is identified as a danioin by specializations on its lower jaw and its numerous anal fin rays. The colouration, while highly distinctive, seems also to be characteristically danioin. The danioin notch (Roberts, 1986; Fang, 2003) is reduced or absent, but the danioin mandibular flap and bony knob (defined herein) are present. The anal fin has iiiSVz-lOV: rays. In addition to its distinctive body spots and barred fins the new fish is distinguished from other species of danioins by the following combination of characters: snout and mouth extremely short; premaxillary with an elongate and very slender ascending process; mandible foreshortened; body deep, with rounded dorsal and anal fins; modal vertebral count 15+16=31; caudal fin moderately rather than deeply forked; principal caudal fin rays 9/8; scales vertically ovoid; and pharyngeal teeth conical, in three rows KEY WORDS. - Hopong; principal caudal fin rays; danioin mandibular notch, knob, and pad; captive breeding. -
