Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia having more than 1.3 million people. RCE Greater Phnom Penh (RCE GPP) was established in December 2009 to promote ESD in Cambodia. RCE Greater Phnom Penh covers not only Phnom Penh but also surrounding provinces, such as Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Speu, Kandal, Prey Veng and Takeo. Recently, in Kampong Cham province of Cambodia, subsistence agriculture tends to be converted to mono-culture. Also, more that 60 percent of farmers have been applying agricultural chemicals without understanding the impact on health and food safety. It is necessary to promote and enhance the understanding of sustainable agriculture among local people including farmers and elementary school students, as the students are the successors of local farmers. So, attention has been paid to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the agricultural sector for achieving food safety, conserving environment and reducing expense for agricultural chemicals in Kampong Cham province. -

Cross-Border Environmental Issues: The Sesan, Srepok, and Sekong (3S) Rivers Dam Developments Overview of the Sesan, Srepok, and Sekong Rivers The Sesan, Srepok, and Sekong Rivers (collectively known as the 3S Rivers) comprise the largest water system made of Mekong River tributaries. The 3S are all international rivers that flow into northeastern Cambodia from their sources in the plateaus of central Vietnam and the Phu Luang mountain range in Laos. The downstream region is made up of Cambodia’s northeastern provinces of Ratanakiri, Steung Treng, and Mondulkiri, where many indigenous and ethnic peoples live with differing livelihoods, languages and cultures. There are approximately 70,000 people living along the three rivers in some 127 villages, and their livelihoods depend on natural river resources. This region is also known for its rich natural resources and biodiversity, and about 40% of Cambodia’s natural forests are in Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri Map: 3S River basin Provinces. The natural resources of the 3S river basin are very important, not just from the perspective of environmental conservation, but for ensuring food security and livelihood for people living in the region who depend on natural resources. Transboundary Hydropower Dam Impacts Because the three rivers are international waterways, upstream development is having a large impact on nature and people in Cambodia. In 1993, construction of the Yali Falls Dam in Vietnam began as the first hydropower dam project in the Sesan River Basin, at a point just 80 km within the Cambodia-Vietnam border. In October 1996, there was flooding of Cambodian villages, the cause of which is attributed to a broken water diversion dam when the Yali Falls Dam was under construction. -

The report, which reviews available population assessments and provides guidance for including further freshwater fish on the CMS Appendices, is presented in this Information Document in the original form in which it was delivered to the Secretariat. Preliminary results were discussed at the 16 th Meeting of the Scientific Council (Bonn, 2010). An executive summary is provided as document UNEP/CMS/Conf.10.31 and a Resolution as document UNEP/CMS/Resolution 10.12. For reasons of economy, documents are printed in a limited number, and will not be distributed at the meeting. © Zeb Hogan Species of the Day: Mekong Giant Catfish The Mekong Giant Catfish, Pangasianodon gigas, is classified as ‘Critically Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM. It is the world’s largest freshwater fish and is found only in the parts of the Mekong River basin that run through Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and possibly Burma and China. The Mekong Giant Catfish has been subject to overfishing for many years.As a result of Geographical range damming and clearance of the flooded forest near the Tonle Sap Lake, its habitat has been www.iucnredlist.org severely disrupted effecting its migration, spawning, eating and breeding habits. www.global.wetlands.org Help Save Species Legislation restricting the hunting of Mekong Giant Catfish exists but is rarely enforced. Artificially spawned individuals have been released into the River Mekong since 1985, and captive breeding (reliant on wild-caught brood stock) has been taking place since 2001. The potentially highly significant impact of dams needs urgent assessment, as recent studies suggest that all large migratory catfish will be eliminated from the river system if two or more mainstream dams are constructed without effective adaptation measures.
