Wine for all peoples: people who thirst. May we who eat be bread for others. May we who drink pour out our love. VERSE 1: Lord Jesus Christ, you are the bread of life, broken to reach and heal the wounds of human pain. Where we divide your people you are waiting there on bended knee to wash our feet with endless care. (Refrain) VERSE 2: Lord Jesus Christ, you are the wine of peace, poured into hearts once broken and where dryness sleeps. Where we are tired and weary, you are waiting there to be the way which beckons us beyond despair. (Refrain) VERSE 3: Lord Jesus Christ, you call us to your feast, at which the rich and pow’rful have become the least. Where we survive on others in our human greed, you walk among us begging for your ev’ry need. (Refrain) Words and Music: Bernadette Farrell ©1990, Published by OCP. All rights reserved “Only the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, the food of life, can satisfy the hunger of hearts for love, a universal experience.” N Pope Francis I’ll be honest this feast is one of my favorites, up there with Christmas and Easter. In a way it shares in the incredible truth that God was born a little Jewish boy and that once brutally murdered on the cross He emerged from the tomb in a wonderful deathless body. All of these events are just too good to be true but...they are true. There are many Christians who are more prayerful and active in good works, who are better than I am, yet cannot believe what Jesus did at the Last Supper. Nor that He wanted the Eucharist to be our connection with Him nor that His Body is, as He said, real food. It’s not pretend: you and I don’t bow or genuflect for pretend. That’s why the Eucharist is called the real presence. We are now in a time of Catholic history in which vast numbers of our fellow Catholics do not think Our Lord was speaking literally. They think it’s a symbol, and as the great Catholic writer Flannery O’Connor once said to a bunch of formerCatholic sophisticates, “If its a symbol, to hell with it.” We may not understand this miracle of bread and wine becoming His Body and His Blood but if we refuse to believe we should not receive Holy Communion. St Paul said it was ‘dangerous’ to do that. Ironically the rabidly antiCatholic types in France, including some Satanists, who break into tabernacles and steal consecrated Hosts actually believe in Jesus’ presence and they hate Him. In a certain sense Jesus has made Himself very vulnerable in the Holy Eucharist but knowing that, He still out of love for us made Himself present. In these difficult days when so many may not be able to be present at weekend Masses you can come to daily Mass and Communion or request visits from Communion Ministers. Pretty soon we will join the 12:15 to the morning 7:45 daily Masses. We’re hungry, God knows we’re hungry and once again Jesus will feed us with REAL food and REAL drink, His Body and Blood, His Soul and Divinity. NFr.
