(RECEIVED August 31, 2019; ACCEPTED January 31, 2020) Abstract We evaluate the timing and environmental controls on past rock-glacier activity at Øyberget, upper Ottadalen, southern Norway, using in situ 10Be surface-exposure dating on (1) boulders belonging to relict rock-glacier lobes at c. 530 m asl, (2) bedrock and boulder surfaces at the Øyberget summit (c. 1200 m asl), and (3) bedrock at an up-valley site (c. 615 m asl). We find that the rock-glacier lobes became inactive around 11.1 ± 1.2 ka, coeval with the timing of summit deglaciation (11.2 ± 0.7 ka). This is slightly older than previously published Schmidt-hammer surface-exposure ages. The timing does not match known climatic conditions promoting rock-glacier formation in the early Holocene; hence we infer that lobe formation resulted from enhanced debris supply and burial of residual ice during and soon after deglaciation.

  • Besøksstrategi for Jotunheimen Nasjonalpark Og Utladalen Landskapsvernområde 2013-2017

DOVRE On historic paths among wild reindeer and alpine plants 2° 3° Dovre National Park Dovre National Park A sense of history over the National Park The Dovre National Park consists of plateaus and hiker-friendly, rounded summits that reach 1700 metres. Most of the park is above the tree line. The landscape around the highest peaks has an arctic character with remnants of permafrost. The park boasts numerous alpine plants, both common and rarer ones. The bird life is also varied and rich. The park is part of a larger area where wild reindeer roam. For some years, the reindeer have been used as an environmental indicator of the current state of the Norwegian mountains. ”United and loyal until the mountains of Dovre crumble”, the constitutional assembly at Eidsvoll declared in 1814. The expression alludes to some thing unshakeable, and symbolises unity and concord. Dovre and Dovrefjell holds a key posi- tion as a national rallying point and a mark of ultra-Norwegianism. Several famous poets and musicians, like Henrik Ibsen, Edvard Grieg and Aasmund Olavsson Vinje, have derived inspiration from this area. Henrik Ibsen’s ”Peer Gynt” with Edvard Grieg’s incidental music to the Hall of the Mountain King has made the massif a symbol famed far beyond the boundaries of Norway. Block fields in southern Norway: Significance for the Late Weichselian ice sheet ATLE NESJE, SVEIN OLAF DAHL, EINAR ANDA & NORALF RYE Nesje, A., Dahl, S. 0., Anda, E. & Rye, N.: Block fields in southern Norway: Significance for the Late Weichselian ice sheet. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 68, pp. 149-169. Oslo 1988. ISSN 0029-196X. The geographical and altitudinal distribution of block fields and trimlines in southern Norway are discussed in relation to the vertical extent of the continental ice sheet during the Late Weichselian glacial maximum. Inferred from these considenitions and formerly presented ice-sheet phases for the last glaciation in southern Norway, a new model on the Late Weichselian ice sheet is presented. This mod el indicates a low-gradient, poly-centred ice sheet during maximum glaciation with the ice divide zone located eiose to the present main watershed. During the deglaciation, the margin of the ice sheet retreated to the coast and fjord areas of western Norway. This induced a backward lowering of the iee-sheet surface, and the culmination zones in areas with low pass-points between eastern and western parts of southem Norway thus migrated E/SE ofthe present main watershed. During maximum glaciation the are as of greatest relative ice thickness were located to the central lowland areas of eastern Norway, to the Trøndelag region, and along the deeper fjords of western Norway. • Crossing the Ice: an Iron Age to Medieval Mountain Pass at Lendbreen, Norway Lars Pilø1, Espen Finstad1 & James H
Antiquity 2020 Vol. 0 (0): 1–18 https://doi.org/10.15184/aqy.2020.2 Research Article Crossing the ice: an Iron Age to medieval mountain pass at Lendbreen, Norway Lars Pilø1, Espen Finstad1 & James H. Barrett2,3,* 1 Department of Cultural Heritage, Innlandet County Council, Norway 2 Department of Archaeology, University of Cambridge, UK 3 Department of Archaeology and Cultural History, NTNU University Museum, Norway * Author for correspondence: ✉ [email protected] Mountain passes have played a key role in past mobil- ity, facilitating transhumance, intra-regional travel and long-distance exchange. Current global warming has revealed an example of such a pass at Lendbreen, Norway. Artefacts exposed by the melting ice indicate usage from c. AD 300–1500, with a peak in activity c. AD 1000 during the Viking Age—a time of increased mobility, political centralisation and grow- ing trade and urbanisation in Northern Europe. Lendbreen provides new information concerning the socio-economic factors that influenced high- elevation travel, and increases our understanding of the role of mountain passes in inter- and intra- regional communication and exchange. Keywords: Scandinavia, Lendbreen, mountain passes, transhumance, Alpine travel, climate change, ice patch archaeology Introduction Like Arctic permafrost (Hollesen et al. 2018), high-elevation ice patches and glaciers are melting due to the warming global climate. Glacial archaeology has developed to rescue artefacts exposed by this process (Dixon et al. 2014), with archaeologists studying melting ice sites in North America, the Alps and Scandinavia (e.g. Hare et al. 2012;Hafner2015;Piløet al. 2018). This research is revealing past trends in high-elevation hunting, transhumance and travel asso- ciated with social, economic and ecological mechanisms.
