9-11 Program.Pmd Dear Friends, September 11th will forever be the day when we recall all the pain that has been visited upon us. But let it also be said that September 11th is the day that we devote ourselves to the families of those who were lost. As we gather today to share the grief of the 344 families whose lives have been forever changed, it is our hope that this Memorial will help everyone to grieve and make certain that the events of September 11th will always be foremost in our thoughts. I want to thank all of you for being here today. And, a heartfelt “thank you” to the hundreds of volunteers from Long Island’s labor unions and donors listed in this journal. Their time and generosity will also never be forgotten because, without them, this day would not have been possible. So let us again offer to share ourselves, to help ease the pain of each family who has been so brutalized. Thank you and God Bless. Sincerely, Thomas R. Suozzi County Executive Dear Friends, It is hard to imagine that nearly six years have passed since that fateful day, September 11, 2001. I am sure that everyone remembers where they were when they first heard of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. As many wish they could forget the horror of that morning, it is important that we don’t. We hope that this Memorial will do just that, serve as a reminder of that day for this and future generations while preserving the memories of the hundreds of people we loved and lost in Nassau County. This Memorial was a tremendous undertaking and literally blood, sweat and tears have gone into it. We hope we have done our job and built a Memorial worthy of the sacrifice so many made on September 11, 2001. A special “Thank you” to everyone who helped make this day a reality. It truly was a community effort and a labor of love. Please take the time to read all of the names on the following pages of the victims, labor union volunteers and donors. Every one of those people are heroes today. Sincerely, Ian R. Siegel President Nassau County 9/11 Memorial Foundation, Inc. Those We Lost... in loving memory In order to compile this list of names, we began a very intensive process nearly six years ago. The actual list of those who died on September 11, 2001 is not public information so, therefore, we had to compile the list of Nassau County victims ourselves. Initially we had heard the number of Nassau County residents lost was 281, however, we realized that that number only included those who actually lived in Nassau County on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Once we began to reach out to compile our own list, we realized there were many who grew up or lived in Nassau County at one point in their lives and moved away who still had friends, family or loved ones still living in the County who wanted these names included. Therefore, we made a decision to open the list to those who had lived in Nassau County for at least five consecutive years anytime in their life. The list then grew to 344. We then went through a rigorous process of verifying the information, making sure names were spelled correctly and all other information was correct. For many of us who worked on this project, some of the most meaningful days were when family members were invited to come in to sign off on the information for their loved ones before the list was sent to the stonecutter to literally be etched in stone. We have left some space on the bottom of the wall, as every few months another person is added to the list, having lived in Nassau County at one point in their life. These are our loved ones. They are the reason we built this Memorial. It is our sincerest hope this memorial will help make certain that the events of September 11th are always foremost in our thoughts. February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. • A Course Whose Time Has Come
A course whose time has come Paul R. Joseph Law is a central component of the democratic State. It defines the relation between the government and its people and sets the rules (and limits) of the restrained warfare of politics. Law becomes the battle ground for moral debates about issues such as abortion, discrimination, euthanasia, pornography and religion. Today we also debate the role Using science fiction and functioning of the legal system itself. Are lawyers ethical? Do judges usurp the legislative role? Are there too many ‘frivolous’ law materials to teach law. suits? Law and popular culture Where do the masses of people learn about the law? What shapes their views? Some peruse learned treatises, others read daily newspapers or tune in to the nightly news. Some watch key events, such as Supreme Court confirmation hearings, live, as they happen. Some have even been to law school. Many people also rely (whether consciously or not) on popular culture for their understanding of law and the legal system. Movies, television programs and other popular culture elements play a dual role, both shaping and reflecting our beliefs about the law. If popular culture helps to shape the public’s view about legal issues, it also reflects those views. By its nature as a mass commercial product, popular culture is unlikely to depart radically from images which the public will accept. By examining popular culture, we, the legally trained, can get an idea about how we and the things we do are understood and viewed by the rest of the body politic.

  • Introduction
Introduction PETER ROBSON AND JESSICA SILBEY Scholarship on law and television has developed slowly over the past 30 years. It began alongside the study of film and law, but its trajectory and import differ in significant ways. This Introduction provides both an overview of the earlier work on law and television and context to the current collection of essays. There are several putative beginnings to law and television scholarship, all dating to the 1980s. The early work of both Stewart Macaulay1 and Lawrence Friedman2 featured the role of television in the development of popular legal culture. Their influ- ential essays form the starting point for the study of popular culture in shaping the public’s conception of the law. Around the same time, studies of Perry Mason com- plemented those describing the popularity of the pioneering legal drama LA Law.3 Others explored television’s role in conceptualising law in the modern era.4 Steven Stark’s 1987 article, ‘Perry Mason meets Sonny Crockett: The History of Lawyers and the Police as Television Heroes’, is emblematic and examines the substantial amount of ‘law and order’ oriented programming on American television in its first 30 years as a mass medium of entertainment.5 By 1990, a mere three years later, one finds the majority of scholarship on law in popular culture focused on television. However, by the beginning of the new century the emphasis switched to film, with only modest contributions in the late 1990s to the study of law and justice on the small screen.6 1 Stewart Macaulay, ‘Images of Law in Everyday Life: The Lessons of School, Entertainment and Spectator Sports’ (1987) 21 L&SR 185.

Breath and Breathlessness (Reflections from the Long Road of My Healing) April 11t h, 2021 Rev. Dr. Leon Dunkley North Universalist Chapel Society Good morning and good Sunday. I hope that this new day finds you well. My name is Leon Dunkley and I am honored to serve as minister to North Universalist Chapel Society (or North Chapel) in Woodstock, Vermont. Today is Sunday, April 11 th and the title of this morning’s reflection is Breath and Breathlessness—Reflections from the Long Road of My Healing. To all souls, I say, “Good morning. It is good to be together.” Maya Angelou proclaimed, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The sacredness of life is measured not by time but by timelessness…by the experiences in life that leave us breathless. Maya Angelou was an artist. She was a poet. She was careful with her words, careful with her meaning…with her healing messages. Poems are like remedies. They are like a little games of words—combed and measured, braided in near-perfect rows. Corn, collard, ochre-green. Lean words, wise and healthy. Fresh and tender to the touch. Maya was a poet. She captured the sun-hot intimacy of living and reflected it back to us, as sunrise…as nebula, comet and constellation, as black hole and as supernova. She reminded us that there are many great struggles in life—between enslavement and real freedom, between greed and true ambition. She’d say, “The desire to reach for the stars is ambitious.

  • What Would Sipowicz Do? Race, Rights and Redemption in NYPD Blue
E D I T E D BY GLENN YEFFETH What Would Sipowicz Do? Race, Rights and Redemption in NYPD Blue BENBELLA BOOKS Dallas, Texas JEFFREY SCHALER Just One Sip for Sipowicz to Slip Like the New York background, Sipowicz’s alcoholism is a cen- tral, if not explicitly mentioned, aspect of NYPD Blue. Sipowicz is an alcoholic, and we all know what that means. Or do we? “Yee doe here but sippe of this cuppe, but then ye shall drinke up the dreggs of it for ever.” —JOHN PRESTON (Breastplate of Faith and Love) NDY SIPOWICZ, our lion-hearted, lily-livered, existential hero, is an “alcoholic.” Sipowicz is drunk in the very fi rst episode of Athe series and wrestles with his alcoholism throughout the en- tire run of the show. Sipowicz’s alcoholism has wrecked his marriage, destroyed most of his relationships and by the end of the fi rst episode is on the verge of ruining his career. Many people struggle with alcohol problems; these problems mani- fest themselves in many ways and are solved—or not—in an equally wide variety of ways. As an expert in the fi eld of addiction and drug policy, I’ve studied the various techniques problem drinkers use to ad- dress their drinking—and the effectiveness of these techniques. I’ll get to this later, but fi rst I want to discuss the most widely known approach to addressing alcohol problems: Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). 63 64 • JEFFREY SCHALER AA has been so successful in popularizing its approach to heavy drinking that many people don’t even realize that its approach is only one of many.
