Mathis Introduction The Helcomyzidae are a small family of acalyptrate Diptera that includes only three genera and 12 species. Unlike most families of acalyptrate Dip- tera, specimens are comparatively large, with adults sometimes attaining lengths of 16 mm. All known species occur on maritime coasts where they Fig. 1: Helcomyza mirabilis Melander. 267 268 Mathis feed on seaweed, especially kelp that has been stranded on the beach, sim- ilar to species of Heterocheilidae and Coelopidae. McAlpine (1991) has suggested that the Coelopidae and Helcomyzidae are closely related phylo- genetically as well as ecologically. McAlpine also suggested the common name of “bridge flies” for the Helcomyzidae. The family is seldom col- lected, is usually poorly represented in collections, and entomologists are generally unfamiliar with the group. Although no species is known to be of economic importance, the larvae contribute to the recycling and biopro- cessing of beach strand. Zoological catalogs, checklists, and equivalent databases are indis- pensable tools for anyone needing a reference to a currently accepted name and frequently to other information relating to that taxon, such as biblio- graphic and distributional data. This is possible because most information is filed under a species’ scientific name, which is the key to retrieval of in- formation from the literature. The system is dynamic, however, and subject to interpretation. The taxonomic literature is constantly changing to reflect recent work, and some species are known by more than one name. -

ABSTRACT BAYLESS, KEITH MOHR. Phylogenomic Studies of Evolutionary Radiations of Diptera. (Under the direction of Dr. Brian M. Wiegmann.) Efforts to understand the evolutionary history of flies have been obstructed by the lack of resolution in major radiations. Diptera is a highly diverse branch on the tree of life, but this diversity accrued at an uneven pace. Some of radiations that contributed disproportionately to species diversity occurred contemporaneously, and understanding the relationships of these taxa can illuminate broad scale patterns. Relationships between some subordinate groups of taxa are notoriously difficult to untangle, and genomic data will address these problems at a new scale. This project will focus on two major radiations in Diptera: Tabanus horse flies and relatives, and acalyptrate Schizophora. Tabanus includes over one thousand species. Synthesis focused research on the group is stymied by its species richness, worldwide distribution, inconsistent diagnosis, and scale of undescribed diversity. Furthermore, the genus may be non-monophyletic with respect to more than 10 other lineages of horse flies. A groundwork phylogenetic study of worldwide Tabanus is needed to understand the evolution of this lineage and to make comprehensive taxonomic projects manageable. Data to address this question was collected from two different sources. A dataset including five genes was sequenced from ninety-four species in the Tabanus group, including nearly all genera of Tabanini and at least one species from every biogeographic region. Then a new data source from a next generation sequencing approach, Anchored Hybrid Enrichment exome capture, was used to accumulate a dataset including hundreds of genes for a subset of the taxa. -

Contributions to the Systema Dipterorum (Insecta: Diptera)
Contributions to the Systema Dipterorum (Insecta: Diptera) Where does this species occur? Where can I find information on the biology? And what is the correct name to use? “Contributions to the Systema Dipterorum (Insecta: Diptera)” answers these and other questions for eleven families of flies. This latest volume of the MYIA series contains comprehensive world catalogs for the Carnidae, Coelopidae, Diastatidae, Dryomyzidae, Helcomyzidae, Heterocheilidae, Odiniidae and Periscelididae, as well as catalogs for Xylomyidae and Xylophagidae and a supplement for the world catalog of Stratiomyidae. Altogether the nomenclature and taxonomy of more than 650 species has been studied by several specialists all of whom are leading figures in the field of dipterology. All chapters relate to the Biosystematic Database of World Diptera, now called Systema Dipterorum, which is a database on fly names available online at http://www.diptera.org. But whereas the database contains nomenclatural data, these comprehensive catalogs cite all the literature published on the included species with keywords and are thus invaluable reference works for these fly families. Two chapters focus on the important dipterists Friedrich Hendel (1874-1936) and Ferdinand Kowarz (1838-1914) who were active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and who described and collected many species. The last two chapters list the abbreviations for type holdings and serials used in the Systema Dipterorum and are helpful tools when working with the database. Summaries of the number of species in families known to be in VC55 at that time were presented with the intention that fuller status assessments would be made in due course. The known records of flies to the end of 2020 are now being collated, checked, validated and plotted in order to produce a sequence of status reports as part of the Leicestershire Entomological Society Occasional Publication Series (LESOPS). Reviews of the Conopidae and Tephritidae have already appeared (Morris, 2021a, b) and are now followed by consideration of records from the fly families with a maximum of 10 species (Table 1). Conseguente al ritrovamento di nuovo materiale di Helcomyza mediterranea (Loew) proveniente da vecchie raccol- te effettuate nei litorali italiani dell’Adriatico settentrionale, vengono qui proposte alcune osservazioni ecologiche, fenologiche e morfologiche su questa specie, con particolare riguardo alla morfologia dei genitali maschili e del postad- dome della femmina. Summary. On discovering specimens of Helcomyza mediterranea (Loew) from some old collections made on the shores of the Italian North Adriatic Sea, some ecological, phenological, and morphological remarks are given for this species, with special reference to male and female postabdominal morphology. INTRODUCTION LOEW (1854) described Helcomyza mediterranea, as Actora mediterranea, based on spec- imens of both sexes from “die griechischen und kleinasiatischen Küsten”. GRIDELLI (1942) pointed out that Loew’s types of this species, preserved in the Museum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität (Berlin, Germany), are represented by only a single specimen, labelled “Türkey [sic] – v. Friv. – Coll. H. Loew”, and that no additional specimens were found in the Diptera collection of that museum. After exhaustively discussing the taxonomic status of this species, GRIDELLI (1942) concluded that Helcomyza mediterranea is the Mediterranean subspecies of H. ustulata Curtis, 1825. Accordingly, he subdivided the latter species into two subspecies, H. ustulata ustula- ta inhabiting the sandy beaches of central and northern Europe, and H. ustulata mediterranea occurring on the seashores of the northern Mediterranean, with isolated records from Venice (Italy), Greece, and Turkey. -
