Jean-Baptiste Grenouille’s Alienation Symptoms in Patrick Süskind’s Perfume: Story of a Murderer. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Sanata Dharma University, 2017. Many novelists create unusual characters in order to attract the reader’s sympathy, and Patrick Süskind is one of them. One of Süskind’s work entitled Perfume: Story of a Murderer tells a story of a character named Jean-Baptiste Grenouille who experiences withdrawal because he is suffering a personality disorder. This undergraduate thesis assumes that Grenouille’s personality disorder manifests alienation symptoms. As the ground of the study, there are two problems formulated. The first problem discusses the characteristics of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. The second problem discusses how Jean-Baptiste Grenouille’s characteristics reveal alienation symptoms. This study employs library research in order to find out Jean-Baptiste Grenouille’s characteristics and how his characteristics reveal alienation symptoms. The writer collects the data by analyzing the books and web-based articles. This study applies psychological approach to analyze the alienation symptoms experienced by Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. There are two findings of the study. The first finding defines Jean- Baptiste Grenouille’s characteristics as an ignorant, prodigious, and ambitious character. Grenouille’s ignorant characteristic is depicted through his experience of being ignored. Grenouille’s prodigious characteristic can be seen through his quality of being an independent learner and having a peculiar ability since he was kid. His ambitious characteristic is revealed through his actions in reaching his life purposes by justifying any means. The second finding depicts that Jean-Baptiste Grenouille’s alienation symptoms are seen from his state of being helpless, disobedient, different, depressed, and difficult to interact with others. Further, Grenouille’s alienation symptoms are depicted through his interactions with other characters. English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Andalas University ABSTRAK Penelitian ini menganalisa ideologi patriarki Partrick Süskind sebagai seorang penulis pria yang direpesentasikan melalui tokoh-tokoh perempuan maupun jalan cerita novel yang berjudul Perfume; the Story of a Murderer. Analisa novel ini menerapkan kritik sastra feminis dengan teori yang dikembangkan oleh Kate Millet yaitu Sexual Politics. Pendekatan yang digunakan dapat memperlihatkan bagaimana laki-laki mendeskripsikan inferioritas perempuan di dalam karya sastranya yang dapat mengimpilkasikan kentalnya pengaruh ideologi patriaki terhadap seorang penulis. Analisa ini merupakan analisa intrinsik dimana pembahasan karya Perfume; the Story of a Murderer hanya dibatasi pada karya itu sendiri tanpa mengkaitkannya dengan faktor eksternal. Dari hasil analisis terhadap karya ini dan didukung dengan data-data yang ada , penulis menemukan beberapa bentuk stereotip negatif tentang perempuan yang direpresentasikan dalam peranan tokoh-tokoh perempuan dari novel ini. Selanjutnya, pada analisa hubungan antara karakter pria dan wanita, penulis menemukan bahwa sudut pandang karakter pria dalam novel ini juga mewakili ideologi penulis tentang inferioritas perempuan yang kemudian diimplikasikan sebagai pembawaan alami perempuan. Hal ini menyebabkan dominasi pria terhadap wanita dalam novel ini terasa lebih nyata dan secara tidak langsung telah menjadi media bagi Patrick Suskind untuk mempertahankan keberadaan ideology patriaki.     JUSTIN HAEJOON YI* Duke University The Evanescence of Smell and Sympathy A Study of Transience in the Filmic and Written Forms of Patrick Süskind’s Perfume I rejoiced when I was able to finally watch Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. I hungrily unwrapped my Subway sandwich, preparing to watch an enjoyable film. Well, I was half right; within the first few minutes, I gagged and rushed to the restroom. The opening scenes of Perfume showed various things found in the Paris downtown marketplace: secreting pus, dead bodies, fish guts, rats, and worst of all, maggots. The visuals of the film were too engrossing (pardon my pun) for me to keep my appetite. But the novel is unique because it deals with a sense that not many other authors had experimented with before—the sense of smell. It is not Patrick Süskind‘s use of nasal analogies that helps to create a new world; it is his capitalization on the ephemeral nature of the olfactory that does. He carries out this theme of transience through not only smell, but also by the lives of the characters and the events of the story. However, the film version directed by Tom Tykwer, for obvious medium differences as well as marketability, changes the story by extending scenes and transforming the egocentric and flawed characters into sympathetic ones. A story about a cast of unredeemable villains in which even the heroes maintain terrible flaws is not an appealing narrative for mass consumption. The protagonist (or perhaps more the anti-hero) Jean- Baptiste Grenouille is an unlikable amalgamation of the worst human traits imaginable.

You feel much better than in your old warthog that smells like food and burnt oil. Cake-baking aroma is spread in the kitchen of a house by the real estate agent or owner who wants to sell it. Perfume is used by guys & girls to draw attention or suggest a highly cultivated lifestyle. Garden stores can smell like fertilizer or like flowers. Which one will sell better? Hospitals & waiting rooms can have the aseptic smell of of carbolic acid or the distracting smell of flowers. A female perfume would be really irritasting! Smells –unconscious component in our behavior Odor greatly affects our evaluation of things and people. Only 20 % of the perfume industries income comes from perfuming humans, 80 % comes from ‘perfuming” the things of our daily life. Anosmia or the loss of the ability to smell leads to depression and a life where you recognize your food just by the taste alone; salty, bitter, hot , cold, sweet. Also your sex drive disappears. What? … Already the ancient Greeks “healed” sex offenders by cutting off their …………. Noses! Why are the noses of many ancient statues broken. Do they all represent sex offenders ? Oh my . Super Smellers. can smell “cyanide” - a non volatile salt in extreme dilution (my boss at Penn State).
