For over 30 years, AQS has been the leading voice in quilting inspiration and advice, through a broad suite of products—magazines, books, live events, contests, workshops, online networks, patterns, fabrics, and catalogs. At AQS, we believe that with inspiration and advice, the creative individual can take their quilting projects beyond what even they had imagined. That is why inspiration is central to everything we do. The leading authors in quilting choose to publish with AQS; the best in quilt artistry select AQS events to display their work; the newest quilters learn from the knowledge and inspiration of AQS members.

To the maximum extent of the law, your attendance and participation, including that of your children and minors accompanying you, in any AQS QuiltWeek workshops, lectures, or special events (paid for or not), is conditioned on your agreement to hereby indemnify American Quilter’s Society, its employees, volunteers, and contractors from and never to make any claim for injury, loss, or damage to you or your children and minors accompanying you, against American Quilter’s Society, its employees, volunteers, and contractors, caused by its very own negligence, strict liability, or for any other reason. By signing the registration form, registering online, or paying for show admission, you agree to the above terms and conditions.

7 Hello Grand Rapids!

We’re happy to be in the beautiful, art-loving city of Grand Rapids for another great QuiltWeek, complete with hundreds of contest quilts, an incomparable array of vendors, and eleven very special quilt exhibits. We hope you’ll take your time, inspect every quilt, and enjoy the fun of being a quilter every moment of your visit.

If you’re hoping to benefit from the added excitement of learning from renowned quilting instructors, it’s not too late to sign up for workshops and lectures. Tickets are still available, so be sure to stop by the AQS Information Center located inside the Exhibit Hall to find the class that’s just right for you, whether you are a beginner or an advanced quilter.

The fun doesn’t end when the exhibit hall doors close. This year, we’re excited to present not only the All-Star Review on Wednesday, where you’ll learn tips and tricks from this year's instructors, but also Developing the Artist Within: Melinda Bula’s Inspiration and Fashion Show on Thursday and Scrappy Quilts: An Evening With Edyta Sitar on Friday, all in Ballroom D.

Know where to find the big winners? Check! Comfortable shoes? Check! Favorite vendors marked? Check! So what are you waiting for? Here’s everything you need, including maps, schedules, all the vendors, exhibit information, and a list of every contest quilt, complete with a few details about each one.

Take some time to explore the dazzling art and culture, awesome dining and nightlife, inspiring natural beauty, and exhilarating community spirit of Grand Rapids. Stroll the downtown sidewalks, complete with river rapids running just steps away from DeVos Place, and visit a wide array of restaurants, clubs, theaters, and museums. In Grand Rapids, every day is a work of art!

Have fun! And thank you for being here—it wouldn’t be QuiltWeek without you.

Rochester Historic Buildings by Art Quilt Guild Oakland

Art Quilt Guild Oakland, which has met monthly since 2012, develops periodic challenges for its members. One of those challenges was to make buildings that represent the history of downtown Rochester, Michigan, where most of the guild lives. Members of the group took photographs of the historic buildings, then determined the amount of road to use for uniformity, and the first member to complete a building provided the overall size to (roughly) match. Any technique was allowed, including photo transfer, embroidery, painting, and more.

Finding Artistic Freedom with Joe Cunningham In 1979, Joe Cunningham assisted fiber artist Gwen Marston in the documentation of pioneering quilt his- torian Mary Schafer’s quilts. Gwen soon taught Joe a basic hand quilting stitch, and both Gwen and Mary helped him to develop a keen, classical eye. His men- tors, steeped in the history and traditions of quilts, provided in-depth instruction in the fascinating study of quilt history and a love of traditional technique.

Today, Joe’s inspiration comes from historical quilts, especially crazy quilts and those by the Gee's Bend, Alabama, quilters. It comes from artists, fabrics, and history. He recognizes and celebrates the 19th-century American women who created with complete artistic freedom. And his style is anything but traditional. “Bicameral Lover’s Knot was my way to depict a marriage. Sometimes you feel Over the years, Joe’s quilts have evolved into a like the side on the left and sometimes unique, personal style that can be found in permanent like the side on the right. The green back- collections of museums and in private collections. He has written 11 books, and was featured in the ground fabric is a wax print from Ghana, Peabody-award-winning PBS Craft in America series, which I buy from Ananse Village in Fort as well as in episodes of many popular quilting shows. Obviously, I aban- Joe’s approach to quiltmaking is absolutely unique, because only Joe knows what he is going to do next, doned the original pattern for the chance and often that next step is still harbored in the back of to make an amusing image. The only his mind. remnant of the original design is in the quilting. I programmed the block design “We all like different things. I realize that most quilt- makers want to have a fairly complete picture in their into my Handi Quilter with a Pro Stitcher minds of the finished product when they start. It’s a and made it an allover quilting pattern.” big job and there is no reason not to have that. But… for me it has become important to work with the fabric, not with pictures of the fabric ahead of time. I will find pattern somewhere as I go…”

Joe doesn’t particularly think he has a creative pro- cess. He’s amazed that, after all these years of making things, he often starts without anything in mind. “Sometimes,” he says, “you have to plan ahead, or you start with a clear idea. But sometimes you can start without either a plan or a concept, and those things will materialize.”

To start a project, Joe might pull a bunch of fabrics and toss them onto the floor. If they seem to go well together—because he doesn’t like the look of things that are too coordinated—he will likely put some back on the shelf because they are too harmonious. He’s looking for the energy he finds when he lays “unfriendly” fabrics next to each other.

Then, after cutting random pieces of the chosen fab- rics without clear direction, something will spark his direction—perhaps a memory of something he has Bicameral Lover’s Knot, 72” x 72”, by Joe Cunningham (2015). Photo by Henrik Kam. been considering. “This is my secret technique: I just start working on something, whether or not I know what it will be. Sometimes I end up with a mis- taken, misshapen, problematic thing. But usually, by the time I am solidly started, I have a sound idea for where to go and how to get there. ” The Molecular Structure of Job’s Tears, 72” x 72”, quilt and photo by Joe Cunningham (2015).

“Job’s Tears is composed primarily of paint-spattered clothing and dropcloth material sent to me from the set painting department of the Chicago Lyric Opera. The reddish lightning strike down the middle is custom-printed fabric by John Cardin. Altogether, I was trying to convey an image from the book of Job that might be more in keeping with the darkness of the story than the traditional quilt pattern by that name, a small four-pointed Star. I used the pattern piece from that star as the basis for the crystalline structure of the quilting design.”

Many of Joe’s quilts are based on the idea of taking a traditional quilt pattern name and making his own ver- sion of that pattern. “Never having gone to art school, I always approach quiltmaking with my head full of quilt references,” Joe says.

“Sometimes, in workshops, quilters will come to me and say, 'It’s just not going to work.' My advice for those who might want to give up is this:

“Don’t give up on your project; there will come a point in it where your insecurity will bloom and convince you that what you are doing is no good. You just have to work through that until you get to the point where you see the sort of secret language your project has and learn to speak it.” “And that is the hardest part: believing that an idea will appear.”

“Lone Star, for instance, is just an image of what I thought a star actually looked like, rather than an eight-pointed construct. I made it by sewing down a bunch of white ½” bias tape in squiggles radiating out from the middle. To some, I added rick- rack. That’s it—bias tape and rickrack sewn down to a back- ground fabric. I keep trying to remind myself that the simplest ideas can be the strongest.”

Lone Star, 70” x 69”, by Joe Cunningham (2015). Photo by Henrik Kam.

“I made New York Beauty with the idea of taking one element of the classic pattern and blowing it up into a whole quilt. I figured out how to make these spiky points freehand and how to make them turn the corner so I could keep all the pink and gray together on one side and all the yellow-green on the other. The pink-and-gray striped fabric was especially rewarding to cut up and resew, because it created such a con- fusing field and thereby obscured the piecing of the spikes.”

72 BIG CONTROL FOR THE SMALLEST PROJECTS Designing a quilt is just the beginning. Giving it a beautiful fi nish is why I use the Baby Lock Regalia. This 20” longarm gives me plenty of room to work more comfortably and effi ciently than ever. The built-in stitch regulator keeps pace with me, creating consistent even-length stitches. Regalia even makes free motion quilting smoother than ever – the handles are independently adjustable and extendable! Top it off with an elegant frame that supports even my largest quilts, and you can see why Regalia is my machine of choice.
