Quiz and Quill 1971-72 EDITION Published by QUIZ AND QUILL, writing honorary of Otterbein College Westerville, Ohio INTERVIEW WITH A POET “LARIAT” On May 3, 1972, the Quiz and Quill and English Department sponsored a lecture by poet William Stafford on “How to Tame a Wild Poem.” Prior to the lecture, Benita Heath had an exclusive interview with Mr. Stafford on his dual role as writer and pro fessor. What makes a writer different from other people? Is it an innate sensitivity or a special attitude toward life? In a recent interview, poet-lecturer William Stafford attempted to answer that question. The difference between artists and non-artists is not a set of qualities, Stafford believes. “All it takes is a commitment to the activity: that in itself is creative.” A professor of English at Lewis and Clark College in Port land, Oregon, Stafford views the classroom as a “hazard” to writing. “We have the mistaken notion that the way to fluency is through mechanical and artificial ways.” An author of four books of poetry, Stafford does not have a personal definition for the art form. He feels poetry is classified by other people. “I don’t know what it is. I just enter the language and let it sustain me.” Stafford said all people have the insight and reactions needed for writing. To be a writer, the poet said, is to start writing in a “sustained and sequential way.” In an ideal society, Stafford believes, the English teacher would be the person ready to listen and understand. The poet says it is easy to correct spelling and punctuation but hard to interact with people - “to ride along with another human being.” He also sides with the students who balk at literary analysis. He disagrees with substituting analysis for human participation in the study of literature. Stafford said, “A person’s reaction is all that is relevant. You’ve got to start from there.” Stafford’s poem, “Lit Instructor” provides a poetic image of the English teacher: Two DEDICATION 'Way after day up there beating my wings with all the softness truth requires . I communicate right; but explain to the dean - well. Right has a long and intricate name. And the saying of it is a lovely thing.” This edition of Quiz and Quill is dedicated to the English teachers of Otterbein College - past and present - who are always “ready to listen and understand.” Three THE QUIZ AND QUILL CLUB 1971-1972 President ................................................. ..................... That is true in nature, and that is true in our lives as well. In nature, there are different types of storms. There are thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and blizzards. In the lives of people, there are also different types of storms. Storms sometimes appear in the form of an illness, an accident, the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, a divorce, or some other tragedy. Some storms, like tornadoes, come suddenly and unexpectedly. A phone call from the doctor can suddenly change your life. An automobile accident can instantly take the life of a loved one. A declining economy can cost you your job. A change of heart by one person can literally tear an entire family apart. These and other such storms can be devastating. They often leave people confused and angry. They sometimes cause us to ask questions like, “Where is God?” or “If God 3 really loved me, why would He allow this to happen?” or “Why did this happen to me?” I must confess at the outset that I don’t have the answers to all the perplexing questions of life.

  • Madison Julius Cawein - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Madison Julius Cawein - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Madison Julius Cawein(1865-1914) Madison Cawein (23 March 1865 – 8 December 1914) was a poet from Louisville, Kentucky, whose poem "Waste Land" has been linked with T. S. Eliot's later The Waste Land. Cawein's father made patent medicines from herbs. Cawein thus became acquainted with and developed a love for local nature as a child. He worked in a Cincinnati pool hall as an assistant cashier for six years, saving his pay so he could return home to write. His output was thirty-six books and 1,500 poems. He was known as the "Keats of Kentucky." In 1912 Cawein was forced to sell his Old Louisville home, St James Court (a two-and-a-half story brick house built in 1901, which he had purchased in 1907), as well as some of his library, after losing money in the 1912 stock market crash. In 1914 the Authors Club of New York City placed him on their relief list. He died later that year and was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery. The link between his work and Eliot's was pointed out by Canadian academic Robert Ian Scott in The Times Literary Supplement in 1995. The following year Bevis Hillier drew more comparisons in The Spectator (London) with other poems by Cawein; he compared Cawein's lines "...come and go/Around its ancient portico" with Eliot's "...come and go/talking of Michelangelo." Cawein's "Waste Land" appeared in the January 1913 issue of Chicago magazine Poetry (which also contained an article by Ezra Pound on London poets).

Mindful Musings ON LIVING LIFE WITH STAGE FOUR CANCER & WINNING Sean O’Sullivan Mindful Musings ON LIVING LIFE WITH STAGE FOUR CANCER & WINNING Sean O’Sullivan INTRODUCTION his book is what I regard as a light mindful reflection of my Trecent three year battle with stage four melanoma cancer and the subsequent successful outcome. You might wonder why I decided to recount the struggle in print? I am firmly of the belief that anybody currently going through a serious health issue may get some sustenance and inspiration from my experience, as in the end the strength of my mind played a major role in getting to the finishing line. There were many times when I was so simply fatigued that I felt like crying “enough” but I found sufficient resources to keep on going. PART 1 outlines the broad details of the three year journey and you will gather that I focused on leaving the treatment in the hands of the Medical Team and concentrated on keeping my mind in as strong a place as I could. You will also note that the power of mindfulness gave me the the insight to take one day at a time, making the best of a difficult situation by focusing my mind in the HERE and the NOW, mainly by controlling my breathing. The negative thoughts in my mind were constantly knocking on my door to try to bring me down. PART 2 is a random selection of mindfulness musings written during my treatment, covering a wide range of topics, a few are fictional and in others, names had to be changed to preserve confidentiality.
