Krivonos Director, Public Sector Management and Professor of Communication California State University, Northridge Presented at the 22nd Annual International Cabin Safety Symposium Universal City, California 14 February 2005 COMMUNICATION IN AIRCRAFT CABIN SAFETY: LESSONS LEARNED AND LESSONS REQUIRED On March 31, 1985, a young man boarded an Air New Zealand flight in London for his home in Oakland, California. The plane stopped in Los Angeles, where U.S. bound passengers were to deplane and board other flights for their domestic destinations, then boarded new passengers and reboarded transiting passengers for the onward flight to Auckland. He became convinced that the Air New Zealand crew was directing Oakland- bound passengers into a transit area, where he headed, then later reboarded with the rest of the New Zealand bound passengers. Airline personnel claim that he was asked twice if he was going to Auckland, and twice answered in the affirmative. His explanation was that the New Zealand-accented crew didn’t say Auckland, but rather, they said Oakland. It was not until sometime after takeoff that he realized his error, but it was too late, and he found himself in New Zealand’s largest city at the end of his flight. The next day the airline flew him home—to Oakland—from Auckland at no charge (Baker, 1985, April 11). Communication has long been suggested as a critical issue in human interaction as can be seen in the above example. Communication is also essential for organizational and managerial performance and success. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission September 19, 2006; Designation List 380 LP-2201 STATEN ISLAND SAVINGS BANK BUILDING, 81 Water Street, Staten Island. Built 1924-1925; Architects, Delano & Aldrich. Landmark Site: Staten Island Borough Tax Map Block 521, Lot 28. On May 16, 2006, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Staten Island Savings Bank and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 2). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Five speakers including representatives of City Councilmember Michael E. McMahon, the Historic Districts Council, Society for the Architecture of the City, Municipal Art Society and Preservation League of Staten Island testified in favor of this designation. A representative of the owner asked the Landmarks Preservation Commission to defer action until recommendations for the overall reinvestment plan for Stapleton is finalized in autumn 2006. Summary The neo-Classical style Staten Island Savings Bank was constructed on the prominent corner of Water and Beach Streets in downtown Stapleton in 1924-25. Designed by the nationally-significant firm of Delano & Aldrich (and one of only a few buildings attributed to Aldrich), it is an important example of twentieth-century Italian Renaissance-inspired neo- Classicism in Staten Island. The architects took advantage of the acute angle of the site to create a dramatic entrance of a colonnaded portico with a fish-scaled cast-lead dome. The facades reflect the interior plan, with rusticated limestone and tall arched windows defined by Tuscan pilasters for the public banking area and ashlar limestone for the administrative offices. -

On U.S. air carriers alone, it has been predicted that in the coming two decades, the number of passengers will double. A global increase in air travel, as well as a growing aged population in many countries, makes it reasonable to assume that there will be a significant increase in older passengers and passengers with illness. Because of a growing interest by the public of health issues associated with commercial flying, the Aerospace Medical Association prepared this monograph for interested air travelers. It is informational only and should not be interpreted by the reader as prescriptive. If the traveler has any questions about fitness to fly, it is recommended that he or she consult a physician. The authors sincerely hope that this publication will educate the traveler and contribute to safe and comfortable flight for passengers. Stresses of Flight Modern commercial aircraft are very safe and, in most cases, reasonably comfortable. However, all flights, short and long haul, impose stresses on all passengers. Preflight, these include airport tumult (e.g., carrying baggage, walking long distances, and flight delays). Inflight stresses include lowered barometric and oxygen pressure, noise and vibration (including turbulence), cigarette smoking (banned on most airlines today), erratic temperatures, low humidity, jet lag, and cramped seating. -

-Passenger Terminal Impedances JEFFREY M. BRUGGEMAN and RICHARD D. WORRALL, Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co. Conventional transportation network analysis requires the estimation of the times necessary to complete three portions of a typical intercity trip. Al though the times associated with the line-haul and access portions have been studied extensively, the time required for transfer between access and line haul modes has not been handled adequately. These times, or impedances, occur at any intercity passenger terminal for air, rail, and bus modes. This paper identifies each of the major components of the passenger ter minal system and develops the respective impedance methodology for each as well as a technique for combining them into a single value representative of the total impedance level for a particular terminal. Data were collected at several intercity terminals in the Washington, D. C., area; and the im pedance levels were determined for each terminal. The methodology and many of the component values are directly transferable to other terminals. In addition, the methodology may be used as an aid in evaluating alternative functional arrangements of the various terminal facilities. •A CONVENTIONAL network simulation model distributes transportation flows across the network as an inverse function of the difficulty, or "impedance," of travel along each link. For a regional network, at least three major categories of impedance may be defined: 1. Link impedance is the measure of the average "line-haul" travel times, costs, or distances associated with travel along the major links of the regional network. 2. Access impedance is the measure of the average "access" times, costs, or distances involved in traveling from a typical origin or destination point to the nearest access/ egress point on the regional network. -

Ana Maria Vieira, Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA) – [email protected] ABSTRACT This article aims to propose a reflection on AIR RAGE, and open horizons and offer a contribution to discussions regarding the growth of this air threat, opening perspectives for further research and studies. This paper aims to raise questions, propose reflection and establish some possibilities of interaction with authors from different areas such as psychology, interpersonal relations, communication, and legal sciences , each of which can contribute in its own way to the debate of this phenomenon that has been growing every year.One of the results of the research in question shows that effective communication is a proactive way of preventing the Air Rage, since it would work as a bridge between the content and the emotional impact, connecting the two components and ensuring that both are granted equal consideration. In this context, the effects of the shortage of communication skills contribute to the creation of "triggers" that lead to Air Rage.The conclusion points to an urgent need to promote a better training of communication skills, which would contribute effectively to develop systems and implement risk management initiatives in order to reduce the Air Rage. -
