I would like to thank my parents and my grandparents especially, always. iii The Fallen Sage – Honours IV, Government & International Relations Abstract This dissertation is an interdisciplinary study of the reign of Emperor Huizong (1100-1126), whose rule proved so paradoxical: after building a new stage of the Northern Song dynasty that resulted in two decades of prosperity, his empire collapsed within a few years. The dissertation examines the strengths and weaknesses of the three leading explanations of the failure of Huizong’s rule, and it shows why they cannot adequately account for the collapse of the empire. The root cause of Huizong’s downfall was not that he was an undisciplined ruler, or that he was the victim of military misjudgements, or that he badly handled tensions between his own Daoist beliefs and a Confucian bureaucracy, as has been claimed. The dissertation asserts that Huizong instead had a legitimation problem. It shows that in his struggle for political power Huizong mainly relied upon the doctrine of the Wise Ruler. This doctrine is analysed in some detail, in order to develop the main thesis. It is argued that Huizong’s attachment to the Wise Ruler doctrine

Tradition and Transformation: Cataloguing Chinese Art in the Middle and Late Imperial Eras Abstract After obtaining sovereignty, a new emperor of China often gathers the imperial collections of previous dynasties and uses them as evidence of the legitimacy of the new regime. Some emperors go further, commissioning the compilation projects of bibliographies of books and catalogues of artistic works in their imperial collections not only as inventories but also for proclaiming their imperial power. The imperial collections of art symbolize political and cultural predominance, present contemporary attitudes toward art and connoisseurship, and reflect emperors’ personal taste for art. The attempt of this research project is to explore the practice of art cataloguing during two of the most important reign periods in imperial China: Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty (r. 1101-1125) and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (r. 1736-1795). Through examining the format and content of the selected painting, calligraphy, and bronze catalogues compiled by both emperors, features of each catalogue reveal the development of cataloguing imperial artistic collections.

Vol. 32.1: 113-60 jason protass A Geographic History of Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism: The Decline of the Yunmen Lineage abstract: For a century during China’s Northern Song era, the Yunmen Chan lineage, one of several such regional networks, rose to dominance in the east and north and then abruptly disappeared. Whereas others suggested the decline was caused by a doctri- nal problem, this essay argues that the geopolitics of the Song–Jin wars were the pri- mary cause. The argument builds upon a dataset of Chan abbots gleaned from Flame Records. A chronological series of maps shows that Chan lineages were regionally based. Moreover, Song-era writers knew of regional differences among Chan lin- eages and suggested that regionalism was part of Chan identity: this corroborates my assertion. The essay turns to local gazetteers and early-Southern Song texts that re- cord the impacts of the Song–Jin wars on monasteries in regions associated with the Yunmen lineage. They brought this idea to the brains of the operation, a local scholar named Wu Yong. Wu Yong suggested that they needed seven or eight bodies to pull this off, but not just any bodies. To that end, he went to recruit three fisherman brothers in Stone Tablet Village: Ruan Xiao’er, Ruan Xiaowu, and Ruan Xiaoqi. As we rejoin the narrative, Wu Yong was spending the night with the three Ruan brothers, and they were drinking and feasting over dinner at the home of one of the brothers. After a few cups, Wu Yong once again broached the pretext of his visit -- that he was there to secure a bunch of big fat juicy fish for a wealthy patron. But the Ruan brothers told him that such big fish were no longer available in these waters. “But you have such a large fishing ground here,” Wu Yong asked, “How come you can’t find big fish?” “To tell you the truth, professor,” said Ruan Xiao’er, the eldest brother, “such big fish can only be found in the waters around Liangshan. The lake around this village is too small for fish that big.” “Well, the marsh around Liangshan is not far from here, and the two bodies of water are connected,” Wu Yong said. “So why don’t you go there to get some fish?” “[Sigh] Don’t even ask,” Ruan Xiao’er sighed.

The stereotype is utterly entrenched: Emperor Huizong (r. 1100–1125) devoted himself to painting birds and flowers and to producing calligraphy in his distinctive calligraphic style in the years that the Jurchen peoples pressed down on China’s northern border. Neglecting his duties, he abdicated just in time to see north China fall to the Jurchen armies. Almost every point, this pathbreaking volume contends, is wrong. Huizong was completely committed to governing his empire. Yes, his concept of governance differed from modern understandings; ritual and music occupied a central place, but he tried to implement real-world reforms. Huizong’s ministers extended the New Policies of the Wang Anshi era (1069–1085) to a greater extent than historians have realized. Moreover, the emperor could not have devoted himself to the arts because he did not actually paint the paintings, do the calligraphy, or write the poems attributed to him (his assistants did and then stamped their work with the imperial seal). Scholars need a book like this especially because The Cambridge History of China volumes devoted to the Song dynasty (960–1279) have been mired in publication delays for years. In the meantime, readers seeking a publication with the same high standards as the Cambridge History should read this book.
