She is one of the fierce forms of the Great Goddess (Devi) mentioned in the Devi Mahatmyam. Bhadrakali is the popular form of Devi worshipped in Kerala as Sri Bhadrakali and Kariam Kali Murti Devi. In Kerala she is seen as the auspicious and fortunate form of Kali who protects the good. It is believed that Bhadrak āli was a local deity that was assimilated into the mainstream Hinduism, particularly into Shaiva mythology. She is represented with three eyes, and four, twelve or eighteen hands. She carries a number of weapons, with flames flowing from her head, and a small tusk protruding from her mouth. Her worship is also associated with the Bhadrakali worshipped by the Trimurti – the male Tantric tradition of the Matrikas as well as the tradition of the Trinity in the North Indian Basohli style.

Dadeechi Rushigalu & Narayana Varma Dadeechi Rushigalu was born on Bhadrapada Shudda Astami. Dadeechi Rushigalu is considered in the Puranas as one of our earliest ancestors and he shines in this great country as the illustrious example of sacrifice for the sake of the liberation of the suffering from their distress. No sacrifice is too great for the noble-minded in this world. During Krutayuga, there was a daityas named Vrutrasura. He, associated by Kalakeyas, was attacking Devataas and made to suffer a lot. Devategalu were losing their battle against Daityaas. At that time they went to Brahmadevaru, who took them to Srihari, who recommended them to maka a weapon to destroy Vrutrasura, with the help of bones of Dadeechi Rushigalu. Dadeechi Rushigalu’s bones were very powerful with the Tapashakthi and with Narayana Varma Japa Shakthi. His bones were very very hard and unbreakable. Dadeechi Rushigalu, thereupon quietly acceded to the request of Indra. By his powers of Yoga he gave up his life so that his backbone might be utilised for making the mighty bow, Vajrayudha. In fact, Dadeechi may be regarded as the starting point of the galaxy of saints that have adorned this great country. Accordingly, all the Devatas went to Saint Dadheechi and requested him to donate his bones to them. Dadheechi accepted their request, left the body voluntarily and donated his bones to Devatas. After his death, all the Devatas collected his bones. They made a weapon named “ Vajrayudha” with the spinal bone of Dadheechi and gave it to Indra. With the help of Vajrayudha, Indra killed Vrutraasura.

India is no exception and in the Tamil country amongst the most famous rivers, Kaveri (among the seven sacred rivers of India) has been the source of wealth for several dynasties that rose and fell along her banks. Affectionately called Ponni, alluding to Pon being gold, the Kaveri river flows in Tamil Nadu for approx. 445 Kilometers out of its 765 Kilometers. Ancient poets have extolled her beauty and compared her to a woman who wears many fine jewels. If these jewels are the prosperous settlements on her banks, the island of Srirangam 500 acres and 13 kilometers long and 7 kilometers at its widest must be her crest jewel. Everything about Srirangam is massive – it is at 156 acres (perimeter of 10,710 feet) the largest Hindu temple complex in worship after Angkor which is now a Buddhist temple.

The focus of the movement was to introduce a new form of Vaishnava doctrine, dedicated to the reformation of society and to the abolition of practices such as animal sacrifice, goddess worship, and discrimination based on caste or religion. A new institutional order was conceptualised by Sankaradeva at that time for the betterment of human wellbeing, which was given shape by his chief dis- ciple Madhavadeva. This came to be known as Sattra, a monastery-like religious and socio-cultural institution. Several Sattras were established by the disciples of Sankaradeva following his demise. Even though all Sattras derive from the broad tradition of Sankaradeva’s ideology, there is nevertheless some theological seg- mentation among different sects, and the manner of performing rituals differs from Sattra to Sattra. In this paper, my aim is to discuss the origin and subsequent transformations of Sattra as an institution. The article will also reflect upon the implication of traditions and of the process of traditionalisation in the context of Sattra culture. I will examine the power relations in Sattras: the influence of exter- nal forces and the support of locals to the Sattra authorities.

Looking back, in the month of January - our Andal Group has been bestowed with plenty of kaimkaryams – “rApathu” chanting at SVT: From 6th Jan (starting from vaikunta ekAdasi) till 15th Jan 2020, our gOshti bhAgavthAs participated in rendering thiruvAimozhi as part of rApathu chanting to please the divya dhampathis at Yatheendragiri. GGG Utsavam: One of our flagship event the GGG Utsavam was celebrated at SVT on Sunday 12th Jan. It was a divine experience with all bhAgavathAs helping each other with arrangements, cooking, cleaning, serving and singing. It was a fun filled blissful day, with cooking the delicious akkaraadisal and rendering it to gOvindan (yathEndragiri perumAL) on behalf of gOdha (AndAL) by his brother gOdhagrajar (svAmi rAmAnujA) and hence the name GGG utsavam. Screening of ghantAvathAram: As many of you may already be gantAvathAram screening aware, Shri U Ve Ananthapadmanabhanachar Swami (APN Swami) has taken great effort and produced and acted in a movie called ghantAvathAram. It is a movie about Swami Desikan. It has been screened in India regularly in the last month and has received great reviews. The first screening of this movie (we believe, the Australian Premiere screening) took place on Sat, Jan 18th in Sydney. Due to popular demand from the many who could not attend the first screening, we are pleased to announce a second screening on Sat, Feb 1st at 3pm at the T2 theatre in the Mason Theatre building, Macquarie Uni campus.
