Colonial Relations in Action in the Celebrity Big Brother Household
POPPADOMS , PRINCESSES , AND PRIVILEGE : (N EO )C OLONIAL RACISM IN THE CELEBRITY BIG BROTHER HOUSEHOLD DAMIEN W. RIGGS Writing on the topic of “celebrity colonialism” requires consideration of how colonialism continues to be reconfigured. More specifically, examinations of the “colonial” in “celebrity colonialism” must pay specific attention to the ways in which ongoing acts of empire (and the racial hierarchies they evoke) enact neo-colonialisms that assume a guise of inclusiveness, but which perpetuate colonial hierarchies. Importantly, however, it is necessary to recognise the existence of postcolonial challenges to neo-colonialisms that may occur in the celebrity sphere. The 2007 UK series of Celebrity Big Brother provides an opportunity to examine these various functions of celebrity colonialism as they played out between British and Indian housemates. Usha Zacharius and Jane Arthurs neatly summarise the events that occurred as follows: In January 2007, the UK reality show, Celebrity Big Brother , became the center of a political controversy when Jade Goody, a previous winner of Big Brother , and two other [British] contestants were accused of racial bullying of Shilpa Shetty, Bollywood film star and winner of the 2007 show. Goody and others coined ethnocentric and racist neologisms to describe Shetty’s cooking, her eating habits, and her nationality which resulted in the show attracting thousands of viewer complaints. The whole issue took on political dimensions in both India and Britain when Keith Vaz, a Labour MP of Indian origin, tabled a motion in the House of Commons criticizing the show’s racism, and Indian commerce minister Kamal Nath and others brought up the issue with visiting British chancellor Gordon Brown. -

Gender and Ethnocentrism in Roman Accounts of Germany Maggie Thompson For a woman who sells her chastity there is no pardon; neither beauty nor youth, nor wealth can find her a husband. For in Germany no one laughs at vice, nor calls mutual corruption “the spirit of the age.” (Tacitus, Germania, 19) It may be tempting to use quotes such as the one above to make inferences about what life must have been like for the German women Tacitus wrote about. However, ethnographies such as the Germania are more useful in garnering information about Tacitus’ Rome than they are accurate accounts of Roman Germany. When constructing the cultural geography of the world they lived in, the Romans often defined themselves, like the Greeks before them, in contrast to a cultural “Other” or “barbarian.” This dichotomy between Roman and non-Roman, West and East, civilized and uncivilized, is a regular theme throughout Classical literature and art. -

Ofcom Content Sanctions Committee Consideration of sanction against Channel Four Television Corporation in respect of its service Channel 4. 1 For Breaches of the Ofcom Broadcasting Code: • Rule 2.3 – Broadcasters must when applying generally accepted standards ensure that material which may cause offence is justified by the context; and • Rule 1.3 – Children must also be protected by appropriate scheduling from unsuitable material. Warriors as the Feminised Other The study of male heroes in Chinese action cinema from 2000 to 2009 A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chinese Studies at the University of Canterbury by Yunxiang Chen University of Canterbury 2011 i Abstract ―Flowery boys‖ (花样少年) – when this phrase is applied to attractive young men it is now often considered as a compliment. This research sets out to study the feminisation phenomena in the representation of warriors in Chinese language films from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China made in the first decade of the new millennium (2000-2009), as these three regions are now often packaged together as a pan-unity of the Chinese cultural realm. The foci of this study are on the investigations of the warriors as the feminised Other from two aspects: their bodies as spectacles and the manifestation of feminine characteristics in the male warriors. This study aims to detect what lies underneath the beautiful masquerade of the warriors as the Other through comprehensive analyses of the representations of feminised warriors and comparison with their female counterparts. It aims to test the hypothesis that gender identities are inventory categories transformed by and with changing historical context. Simultaneously, it is a project to study how Chinese traditional values and postmodern metrosexual culture interacted to formulate Chinese contemporary masculinity. It is also a project to search for a cultural nationalism presented in these films with the examination of gender politics hidden in these feminisation phenomena. With Laura Mulvey‘s theory of the gaze as a starting point, this research reconsiders the power relationship between the viewing subject and the spectacle to study the possibility of multiple gaze as well as the power of spectacle. -

Of the 647 actors that are series regulars on the five television broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox, and NBC) 2.9% were LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) in the 2011-2012 season (GLAAD). -

This is one of several exhibitions distributed by The Art Gallery of Alberta as part of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program. This Interpretive Guide has been specifically designed to complement the exhibition you are now hosting. The suggested topics for discussion and accompanying activities can act as a guide to increase your viewers’ enjoyment and to assist you in developing programs to complement the exhibition. Questions and activities have been included at both elementary and advanced levels for younger and older visitors. At the Elementary School Level the Alberta Art Curriculum includes four components to provide students with a variety of experiences. These are: Reflection: Responses to visual forms in nature, designed objects and artworks Depiction: Development of imagery based on notions of realism Composition: Organization of images and their qualities in the creation of visual art Expression: Use of art materials as a vehicle for expressing statements The Secondary Level focuses on three major components of visual learning. I think this is what has propelled the series to its successful status and has made it acceptable for it to deal with issues that most other series can’t or don’t get away with. Bittersweet on OurChart.com Do I think every character is representative of every lesbian that I know? Probably not, then most lesbians that I know work everyday, want a nice place to live, want a decent partner and just do about the same things that every heterosexual person does. This is a TV show. It's a soap opera, albeit a classy one. I, for one, will continue to watch, subscribe to Showtime, and post measured commentary on the site. Filmlover on OurChart.com I. Contexts I would like to provide some context for this paper on The L Word from recent news stories which directly relate to American culture’s continuing struggle with normative views of gender and sexuality. In February of 2007, Largo, Florida, city manager Steve Stanton, a 17-year veteran in his job was fired by a city council vote after coming out as a transgendered person. Sexual orientation and gender identity and expression are not protected from employment discrimination at the national level or in the state of Florida. -

Baker, PhD Texas A&M University-Commerce, 2017 Advisor: Christopher Gonzalez, PhD Superhero comic books provide a unique perspective on marginalized characters not only as objects of literary study, but also as opportunities for rhetorical analysis. There are representations of race, gender, sexuality, and identity in the costuming of superheroes that impact how the audience perceives the characters. Because of the association between iconography and identity, the superhero costume becomes linked with the superhero persona (for example the Superman “S” logo is a stand-in for the character). However, when iconography is affected by issues of tokenism, the rhetorical message associated with the symbol becomes more difficult to decode. Since comic books are sales-oriented and have a plethora of tie-in merchandise, the iconography in these symbols has commodified implications for those who choose to interact with them. When consumers costume themselves with the visual rhetoric associated with comic superheroes, the wearers engage in a rhetorical discussion where they perpetuate whatever message the audience places on that image.
