The Design Brief

1. Communities of Culture

Introduction The Hunt Museum is currently developing an active community arts and culture programme through outreach with a range of local groups. The purpose of outreach in museums is to actively encourage wider participation in cultural activities within local communities.

As part of City of Culture, The Hunt Museum proposes to design, develop and deliver Communities of Culture, a programme exploring the different unique cultural experiences and heritages of each of Limerick’s regeneration areas – Southill, Ballinacurra Weston, Moyross and St Mary’s Park. Through a series of targeted community- and museum-based multi-workshop projects, Communities of Culture will support 8 groups (2 groups within each area) in expressing their unique stories and contribution to the cultural landscape of Limerick. The groups will be recruited from a variety of communities to ensure a wide range of perspectives and voices including young people, women, men, older people, ethnic minorities, migrants, and people with disabilities are present.

Communities of Culture will also create opportunities for the general public in Regeneration areas to contribute to the overall programme through locally-held public events. The projects will culminate in 4 community-based pop-up style touring exhibitions highlighting the achievements, stories and heritage of each area through the lens of the groups involved as well as contributions from the wider community. These exhibitions will be launched within the ‘local’ Regeneration area and then tour to other community-based venues both within Regeneration areas and Limerick City/County during Limerick City of Culture and beyond.

The Hunt Museum has obtained funding from the Social Interventions Fund and The Friends of The Hunt Museum for this. The aim of the Communities of Culture is to enable a diverse range of local groups to explore their history in an accessible and enjoyable way.

It is anticipated that four of small community-based exhibitions and other interpretative projects will be developed in connection with this between now and September 2014.

In connection with this project, we are consequently seeking an experienced and creative design company to undertake the design and production of the following:
