| CANTO DI LAGO | 2012 SANGIOVESE BARBERA … Sangiovese and Barbera are not “old world”, not even “new world”, anything loud. Zonte’s Footstep’s Canto di Lago vineyard, meaning ‘Song of the Lake’ is planted next to the shores of Lake Alexandrina. Our vignerons claim that the sound of the gently lapping of the water is the more beautiful for a vine than any other sound, and is the made of Mediterranean grape varieties such as in this blend. Zontes’s Footstep is named after 19th century Zante currant vineyard as new plantings follow the original footstep. The currant business dried up, but Zonte’s Footstep became our blueprint… In 2003 a group of mates pooled old white utes and new-ish tractors to grow the best grapes from the best vineyards. All we want to do is taste our fruit in our wine, so we charged our reigning winemaker, Mr. Ben Riggs, with one goal; to make wine true to vineyard so long as it is a bloody good drink! The Canto di Lago vineyard is on a 40 million year old alluvial plain, nestled between two rivers adjacent to Lake Alexandrina, upstream from the River Murray’s sea mouth. It is an oasis in a cool desert with vines planted on their own roots, in maritime red sands that sit over pre-Cambrian Limestone and ideal for growing grapes The truth is out there in the vineyard…. but the proof is in this bottle! This is how late chairman Evans OBE made us all do it. Vale Len. Vintage 1930; Decanted 2006. Colour: Rich magenta with royal purple hue. Nose: Peppercorn spice and a hint of cedar. Warm aromas of plums and cherries. An elegant nose driven by the fruit. Entry: Rich, juicy and fragrant red fruits. Some tangy cedar and spice characters. Middle Palate: Lush round blackberry and plums, tempered with some light but typical Sangiovese savoury tannin. After Palate: A medium bodied fruity finish with savoury overtones that taper out in the mouth with persistent long grained fruit tannin. Finish: Malt, cedar and intense blackberry. Minutes later, the flavour still lingers. In Summary: This is the eighth consecutive vintage of this wine and though it will drink great now, especially with anything off the grill, it should cellar well as previous vintages.
