Judy Garland Celebrated Universal Music Enterprises Remastered Vinyl Reissues Beat: Vips JUDY GARLAND CELEBRATED UNIVERSAL MUSIC ENTERPRISES REMASTERED VINYL REISSUES VINYL REISSUES OF THREE CLASSIC ALBUMS PARIS - LOS ANGELES, 02.12.2015, 17:13 Time USPA NEWS - Judy Garland is one of America's cherished show business icons, an international superstar who went from singing her way into our hearts as a child star in The Wizard of Oz crooning 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'... Judy Garland is one of America's cherished show business icons, an international superstar who went from singing her way into our hearts as a child star in The Wizard of Oz crooning 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' to winning a juvenile Academy Award, a Golden Globe, a special Tony and numerous GRAMMYs during the course of her more than 40 years as a performer up until her death at the age of 47 in June, 1969. Universal Music Enterprises celebrates Judy Garland's incredible legacy with a trio of remastered, 180-gram vinyl reissues of her greatest albums, including two-LP versions of both the 1965 'Live' at the London Palladium with daughter Liza Minnelli and the 1961 Judy at Carnegie Hall, along with a single disc of the 1955 studio album Miss Show Business are all available now. The 50th anniversary edition of 'Live' at the London Palladium features Garland and daughter Minnelli performing separately and together on two discs, joining forces on 'Hello, Dolly!,' 'Together (Wherever We Go),' 'When the Saints Go Marching In,' 'He's Got the Whole World in His Hands' and several medleys. The new two-disc vinyl version of the album, which originally peaked at #41 on the Billboard 200 after its 1965 release, includes new liner notes written by Liza Minnelli. Originally released in 1965, Judy at Carnegie Hall will also be reissued as two, remastered 180-gram vinyl discs, with new liner notes penned by Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Ragtime). This classic album captures Garland's performance at New York's fabled Carnegie Hall on April 23, 1961, dubbed 'the greatest night in show business history,' marking her remarkable comeback from health problems. The album was a cultural phenomenon, spending 73 weeks on the Billboard charts, including 13 weeks at #1, eventually certified gold, winning four GRAMMY® Awards, including Best Album of the Year (the first live recording and first female release to do so), Best Female Vocal Performance, Best Album Cover and Best Engineered Album. In 2003, it was one of 50 recordings chosen by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. In addition, Miss Show Business will be reissued in a remastered, single-disc 180-gram vinyl 60th Anniversary edition with new liner notes contributed by Judy's daughter Lorna Luft. This studio album, originally released in 1955 on Capitol Records, peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200, and features definitive versions of classics like 'Rockabye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody,' 'After You've Gone,' and 'Over the Rainbow.' SOUND RECORDING REVIEWS Chicago Symphony Orchestra: The First Hundred Years CS090/12 (12 CDs: monaural, stereo; ADD)1 Available only from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 220 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL, for $175 plus $5 shipping and handling. The Centennial Collection-Chicago Symphony Orchestra RCA-Victor Gold Seal, GD 600206 (3 CDs; monaural, stereo, ADD and DDD). (total time 3:36:3l2). A "musical trivia" question: "Which American symphony orchestra was the first to record under its own name and conductor?" You will find the answer at the beginning of the 12-CD collection, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra: The First 100 Years, issued by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO). The date was May 1, 1916, and the conductor was Frederick Stock. 3 This is part of the orchestra's celebration of the hundredth anniversary of its founding by Theodore Thomas in 1891. Thomas is represented here, not as a conductor (he died in 1904) but as the arranger of Wagner's Triiume. But all of the other conductors and music directors are represented, as well as many guests. With one exception, the 3-CD set, The Centennial Collection: Chicago Symphony Orchestra, from RCA-Victor is drawn from the recordings that the Chicago Symphony made for that company. All were released previously, in various formats-mono and stereo, 78 rpm, 45 rpm, LPs, tapes, and CDs-as the technologies evolved. Although the present digital processing varies according to source, the sound is generally clear; the Reiner material is comparable to RCA-Victor's on-going reissues on CD of the legendary recordings produced by Richard Mohr.

  • 2006 Was Another Year of Great Events, New Releases, and Accolades for and About Judy Garland’S Great Talent and Body of Work
2006 was another year of great events, new releases, and accolades for and about Judy Garland’s great talent and body of work. The biggest news for this past year was the discovery of two of the lost Decca recordings that Judy made in 1935. Thought to be lost forever, these recordings were transferred to digital format and put up for auction (see following page for details). The other big news for the year would have to be the highly successful release of the Judy Garland stamp on what would have been Judy’s 84th birthday, June 10, 2006 (see following page for details) June 2006 could well be remembered as the best “Judy Garland Month” ever! We had the stamp release, two new CDs, over 10 DVDs, the Judy Garland Festival in Minnesota, and more! Plus, The Judy Room has a new look! Beginning in Summer 2006, I began making “vintage magazine covers” the theme of the homepage (see the thumbnails below). These covers reflect the change in seasons and special events or holidays while also fondly looking back to golden age of fan magazines . A BIG THANK YOU to “Alex in Belgium” for his masterful photo colorization. I would like to extend a special thanks and appreciation to Eric Hemphill, Scott Schechter, “tinman”, Donald, and everyone else who has helped to make The Judy Room a success. I hope you all know that I couldn’t do this without you. THANK YOU! Sincerely, Scott Brogan The Judy Room JANUARY 12, 2006: The Recording Industry Association Of America (RIAA) announces their Grammy Hall Of Fame inductees, and the 1956 M-G-M Records soundtrack to The Wizard Of Oz is included.

246 ARSC Journal The noise is not by any means overwhelming, the voice is clear and forward, but it is prominent. What we hear is a raw talent that has not yet achieved the artistry and command that would, just a short time later, make an impression that stamped her recordings as definitive. There is the same shortness of breath that would mar her late recordings, choppy phrasing, and uneasy high notes; but still, it is Muzio and we should treasure all of her that we have. There are forty-three selections on the discs. Four are unpublished songs recorded for Edison between 1920 and 1928. There are no duplicate versions or unpublished selections since all the Pathe's were published. This is a worthy companion to the other Romophone Muzio set. It will not need recommen dation to Muzio fans, but others might be better served by Romophone's earlier release of her later recordings. Reviewed by Howard Kennett Endnote 1. For a summary of the contents of these CDs, see the Recordings Received column. Judy Garland: The Complete Decca Masters (plus) MCAD4-11059. Recorded 1936-1947. 4 CDs. AAD. MCKs new four-CD box-set of Judy Garland's complete Decca recordings is a coura geous, lovingly produced splendor. It will also leave those who respect Garland's immense talents, and who love music too, perplexed and somewhat disappointed. Despite her legendary status, Judy Garland did not record much during her four decade career. Not counting all the junk collections of television appearances, out-of copyright studio dates, and bests-of ad nauseam, there were two major commercial recording contracts, Decca and Capitol, and two minor ones, MGM and Columbia.

  • Great Entertainers
Great Entertainers Judy Garland Judy Garland Judy Garland was a little Mozart of song and dance who led a dazzling and extraordinary life. Though forever remembered as the wistful little Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz going up The Yellow Brick Road and singing ‘Over the Rainbow’, it was her plaintive quality, her humour, her ability to be dramatic and send herself up that made her a unique artist. Tender love songs, torrid torch songs, quiet songs, noisy songs, songs with a swing to them, songs with a sentimental strain to them, she could do them all. She hoofed it with Mickey Rooney, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire whilst belting out some of Hollywood’s greatest songs. She was a natural. Her abilities came so easily, so naturally, that she came to doubt them. Suffering from stage-fright and emotional problems, she exasperated everyone around her with her ab- sences and lateness, but she needed little rehearsal time and all would be forgiven when she produced a moment of magic. On stage she was a tiny, stocky figure, so where-in lay the magic? Innocent of any artful management, she sang directly to her audience, able to convey the joy and heartrending pathos of human existence: “She sang, not to your ears, but to your tear ducts.” And with her gift for self-mockery and sense of the ridicu- lous, she had an ability to rise above adversity and carry on. Her highly-publicised life of suicide attempts, broken marriages and neurotic battles with weight and sleep seemed to draw affec- tion from her audiences, yet it was her gaiety, passion, and huge, warm dramatic voice that seized her audiences and filled theatres around the world.
