1999 was another big year for Dragons Volleyball. 2000 is going to be even BIGGER, but we need new players to make this a reality – this is a perfect time for you to learn how to play, and it’ll be even more fun if you get some mates along for a hit.

We’ve got some great coaches, all looking forward to mixing it up with new players and picking on all the oldies.

Here’s our calendar: Practices @ Onslow College, Sundays 1:30 - 3:30, 30 April to 15 October Johnsonville EXCEPT July 23rd as we want a holiday!

Central Zone Tournament #5 July 22 – Porirua Recreation Centre

Dragons Annual Tournament October 7/8 – Porirua Recreation Centre

Latest Results Some of you may or not be aware that the Dragons name has become quite well known around the Wellington volleyball world, and this is due mostly to our enthusiasm and energy when we play. Although our part of the club is quite small, we are becoming a very competitive unit, and this was shown in Wanganui on Saturday 17th June, when the men’s team played during a Central Zone tournament.

The story goes something like this: 6 players, 2 with the flu, and a support crew (thanks Dori & Megan) drove up on Friday night, racing against the clock to make sure we were able to watch the All Black romp over Tonga. An early start to the tournament, and a tough one, playing Wanganui (who were ranked above us). A good win, and a small 10minute breather before having to play Eagles, the number one seeds. A loss incurred, but not after some inspiring play, showing the hidden talents Dragons possess.

Throughout the tournament, despite the inevitable fatigue, each of the 6 players continued to lift themselves and their level of play, and did the Club proud with some very gutsy performances against teams who were bigger, stronger and more experienced. The best performance was against Spikes, a Porirua club team who were seeded 2nd. We lost both sets, but not without a fight: 15-25, 21-25. Coming off a game like that, against a team who were seeded 6 places ahead of us was very encouraging.

The players were: Geoff Wong (C), Manda Chin, Devlin Lee-Joe, Jeff Fowles, Derek Young, Andrew Fok. Technical advice was offered by Roger Chang.

Thanks also to Dori Chin, Megan Lay, Tamara Parnay for all their help during warmups, encouragement and water bottle duties!

Tamara also played during the weekend, for the Eagles womens team, which came 2nd to a strong NZIS team. (Superstar!)

What’s Been Going On?

AUCKLAND 2000 EASTER TOURNAMENT What Happened: This years tourney was held in Auckland, and was on the whole a reasonably enjoyable one – even if not all of us can remember the chronology of events correctly!

Wellington didn’t fare too well in the sports, making most of the finals yet being pipped at the posts by a dominant Auckland. One area we DID dominate in was the Indoor Netball, where we cleaned up, with both our teams having a chance to play in the finals.

There were a few organisational issues that cropped up during the tournament, and these will be tabled at an NZCA meeting which will review the tournament’s organisation and performance. One of the major issues raised was the lack of social events organised for players under 18, who are now not legally able to enter bars. This will need to be kept in mind when Dragons organises it’s own social events.

Other than those hiccups, it was a great opportunity for most of the local Chinese community groups to meet and play against each other, renew friendships and make new ones!

AND, in case you didn’t know: Winners Men's Open Tennis - Brent Lee & David Thackeray Winners Women's Open Tennis - Anna Young & Pam Chin

EASTER 2001 INFORMATION UPDATE! As some of you may be aware, there is an Easter Tournament held in South Africa, which is practically identical to our own. If anyone is interested in forming a sports contingent to travel there for a 10-day stay, and meeting some CHINESE South Africans (whoa, how weird is that?) please contact Roger Chang or Anthony Joe to register your interest.

At the moment, any team(s) have the blessing of the Wellington Chinese Association, however there are still a number of details to be ironed out, including fundraising for the team, and also supervisory issues.

Next year, the South African Easter Tournament will be held in Cape Town, which is located on the southern coast. (Think China Basketball Trip in a much warmer climate!)

The Queens Birthday Tournament was held over the weekend June 3-5 at the Wellington Chinese Sports & Cultural Centre (WCS). Dragons had teams in every grade ranging from the very serious A grade, the less serious B grade, social C grade, Under 18 and non-competitive Intermediate/Miniball/Tiniball grades (for ages 5-12). We battled against other teams from Wellington, Canterbury, Auckland and Manawatu. The weather was cold but the basketball was HOT! It was good to see the high standard of basketball skills and sportsmanship displayed by Dragons players. Congratulations to all winners and well done to all participants - we hope you enjoyed yourselves!

The results of the tournament were as follows:

Grade Finalists Winner Mens A Dragons A Vs Manawatu Dragons A Womens A Dragons A Vs WCS A Dragons A Mens B Dragons B Vs Canterbury Dragons B Men C Dragons D Vs WCS C Dragons D Womens C Dragons B Vs WCS Blk Ink Dragons B/WCS Blk Ink * Mens U18 Dragons A Vs WCS WCS

The Womens C grade final was cancelled and declared a draw after Judy Young of WCS collapsed on the sideline and was taken to hospital. The Dragons Basketball Committee wishes Judy a full and speedy recovery.

Write-ups on each of the Dragons teams are as follows:

Dragons A (Mens A Grade) The Dragons Mens A team was extremely successful over the Queens birthday weekend. Maintaining the solid core of players from last years Championship team, they were bolstered by the new comers of Cheeba Cheeba- 'i need 30 mins to sleep' Chang, and Craig 'The Latex Medical Glove' Young. so welcome to A grade boys ... is it as fun to play as it is to watch ? With props going out to our boyee Sander 'monkey boy' Veenstra, as skinny as a string bean and with arms like spaghetti, mad hops like an automated pogostick..... its a shame he twisted his ankle a week prior to the tournament... so the boys dedicated this victory to monkey boy of the four winds!!!!!! YEAH !!!!!!

Thanks goes out to Dean 'Dead Eye: Chin for coaching the boys to a great and convincing Queens Birthday tournament win!!!! Always well prepared and with a game plan that will beat any team he’s always the professional, and that 51 inch TV is pretty handy as well for after party functions.

On to the team...... When we talk about talent we talk about Ants Joe, this guy is so good he’s almost got his head stuck up his rear ...... staunch to the bitter end... with a drink in his hand and simone in the other.....had a relatively quiet tournie , with the supporting cast helping him out this time, although people still lay those weak fouls on him and 3 point plays .. didn't take a single 3 pointer all tournament. and he says he can shoot them ...... just not in practice when he loses every shooting drill possible......

Cliff, the original big dog . finally the undersized power forward has been succeeded by Shane Lowe at the forward spot .... but thats another story, Cliff is entering his 12th season as a pro, his scoring numbers have gone down, his dirty play is still up there with john stockton and dennis rodman..but this year Cliff showed us something special...... he didn’t foul out of any games, much to our

8 surprise, he was moved to guard permanently and his game expanded to passing to his open team mates for open baskets ..... no longer the U step 2 step hanging finger role Cliff is now the complete player his brother is.....

On to Daniel "tim duncan im the champion of the world" Joe..... after his rampaging effort at easter with 25 minutes, 0 points and 2 rebounds in the easter final Dan had something to prove. And without a doubt Danny boy was the MVP of the team..rebounding, scoring, blocking shots..... even dislocating his little finger and showing everyone it was bent....a MOnster game against Manawatu showing lawrence who the man really is.... its a shame Danny cant do this at intercity grade.....

Ed '@#**&%!!!*@@' Szeto ..... the youngest team member at age 20 Eddy showed his worth for the team with his cheap shots and low blows .....trying to learn from the great one Ant joe.....but then he had to have a seat cos the foam in his mouth was choking him ...... Our three point bomb specialist and ball fake master ......

Glendale 'smoothy' Rangi - the third 2nd divsion representative with ants and Dev ..... didnt get to show his full game . and with minutes scare had to take a seat on the bench. but when he comes on . boy does he come on..... with slick finger roles and moves around the hope glendale can sneak around any tubby young.....

Craig .... our defensive specialist .... 110% energy off the bench , he never gives up and is our spark plug his first year in A grade .. and many more to come.....martin lau says he cant shoot free throws......

Cheebaaaaaa ..... Dentist..... basketball player...... shane look alike...... had enough shots around the basket to last him a life time, too bad he didnt convert..... Bubbles still has yet to make an impact ...... Shane ' i got game ' lowe ...... his coming of age, thrust into the starting line up Shane excelled in his new role as starting power forward . with supreme efforts against every team Shane is here to stay ...... except his baseline shot hit the side of the backboard twice...... nice one Martin !!!!!

Dev ..... predicted and guaranteed a win this tournament. cool, calm and collected just not as anal as ants....

The finals was a mere formality against Manawatu..... it was over in the first 10 minutes ...... The most interesting game for this young team was against the Youngs...... a small disagreement between Cliffy and sideshow wingnut BOB led to a minor fracas that was easily sorted out by a sharp knee to the groin area.. and a Dev headlock special take down..... suddenly it was all on and WHOS YOUR DADDY ?? With players being ejected left right and Centre, we'd like to give a big thank you to all the Dragons teammates on the court who were smart enough to stay out of the gorilla rush and to save it for the game as they knew that both the brothers could handle all the Youngs put together!!!!!!!

A high octane Defensive minded team... the dragons were powered by the Diamond Press giving them easy baskets on the offensive end...... Well drilled in the zone offense and half court set the boys are looking for a 3 peat in Dragons tournament..... Truly one of the most feared and dominating teams ever seen in a Dragons Uniform...... and the Dynasty is about to begin...

Dragons B ( Mens B Grade) The B grade was split between two very experienced & controlled teams (i.e. mostly slow & old players) and two young “run & gun” teams. The Dragons B team (Roy Yee, Brian Yee, Steven Young, Matt Yee, Voldi Simi, Afa Lepaio, David Choong, Mark Young, & Jason Zhai) was obviously not one of the young & fast teams. The grade was extremely close and there was a 3 way tie for 2nd place with only a few points determining who got to play Dragons in the final. This honour went to Canterbury and it was very close between the two veteran teams for most of the game. Canterbury played a good game and exhibited very good sportsmanship. Dragons also struggled with numbers on the final day: Jason had to work on the last two days, David was badly injured the day before the

9 tournament started, Mark broke his nose on Sunday, and Matt didn’t show up for the final until half- time. It was a tough final for our coach – Paul Wong She. In the end Dragons pulled ahead to win and remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. Phew!

Dragons C Grade) The tournament started well for the team as we had some fairly easy games to begin with. We walked over Manawatu and ACM quite easily for a team who had never played together and didn’t really know everyone. The team consisted of a new and old faces. Mark Ngan Kee, Jason Chin, Mike Gua, Mike Young, Mike Ngan, Stephen Ngan, Roger Chang, Don Kai, and a short appearance by that dodgy lout Sen Thong-Song-Thong. As our first two games were not much of a challenge, we were somewhat unprepared for the semi-finals. The semis was the first game to test our skills. Unfortunately, along with the numerous players who suffered an injury, we were defeated. In the end the team played well together and it was good to play in a team who not only had fun but got along well as mates. Also a big thanx to Ants for coaching us.

Dragons D (Mens C Grade) The D stands for DESTROY and that is what we do to our opponents. This team took out the C grade and could even give some B grade teams a worry. The team consisted of Jay Phan, Nigel Ngan, Sam Kwang, Sophin Sun, Simon Ang, Holona Vaniddakinga, Louis Smith, Marvin Smith, Mei Rattanong, & John Cooper. Beware LA Lakers!

Dragons A (Mens U18) The team played well to get into the final: Aaron Yee, Ben Szeto, Craig Chin, Ed Lau, James Chin, Phillip Wong, Samuel Chan, Terry Chin, Tim Yee. Thanks to Cliff Wong and Ed Szeto for a superb coaching effort.

Dragons B (Mens U18) This team did exceptionally well considering the team only had a few weeks to prepare. The team started off badly after being walloped by Dragons A , but as the tourney went on the team improved. The points margin of each successive game got smaller and smaller as the team grew accustomed to playing with each other. The stand-out player has to be Hobbs [Johnathan Young]. He shot a three pointer to give our team our only lead of the tournament. The low point of the tourney was when Clayton aggravated his troublesome knee. The high point was that one minute 2 point lead over Dragons A. The team was: Michael Kwon, Martin C, Brendan, Kyle Joe, Ken, David, Clayton, Marty Marts and Johnathan "Hobby" Young. Our thanks to: -Head coach-Shane Lowe -Offensive co-ordinator-DJ -Defensive co-ordinator-Craig Young

Dragons A (Womens A Grade) The Womens A team chalked up another tournament win in a nail-biting one-point finish over WCS in the weekend. The result was an outstanding achievement considering the varying numbers of players available for each game in the tournament. The team consisted of Nat Foon, Diana Goh, Gina Joe, Ione Lepaio, Laura Ng, Jenny Ngan Kee, Irene Simi, Nat Tong, Anna Young and Kelly Young. Thanks go to Devon Wong for coaching the team.

Dragons B (Womens C Grade) Womens B Team: Fara Kiriau, Lilly Lee, Brenda Leong, Nu Roache, Joss Young, Audrey Yee, Issy Yee, Jenny Yee and Ruby Yee Coach: Voldi Simi

We were all so enthusiastic, fighting for first place on the bench!!! Well what do you expect after zero attendance at practice!! During the first half we encountered the usual minor hitches. But a

10 couple of airballs later we getting back into the grove of things, eventually winning against WCS U21's 30-11. Second game versus Dragons U21 was a good clean game, the juniors played really well and the game was enjoyed by everyone. Close score to us 18-16. Funnily enough, come the third game, we were starting to feel the effects of the previous day with sore backs, knees, shoulders, ribs (ask Ruby about that one!) and playing on the big court did help either (it makes a difference at our age you know)! The final outcome of the WC grade was a draw, the joint winners being WCS Black Inc and Dragons B.

Many thanks to Voldi for keeping our team on track and letting us have a laugh and enjoy ourselves on court (don't know how you manage to get the message through at time-outs, especially while EVERYONE is talking!) - I suspect you didn't expect such a loud/vocal team!!! A big thank you to our official but non-playing team member, fill-in coach and all-round most dedicated supporter - Jenny Yee!! And thank you (especially to Joss, who beat me, winning first prize for worstest ever airball of the tourney!) to the rest of the team for keeping me company during the tournament, I hope you had as much fun as I did.

Thanks, Brenda (Captain)

Dragons WU21 (Womens C Grade) This is a young, up and coming team with heaps of potential! Unfortunately there was no WU grade and the team had to play in the senior Womens C grade. Players like Amanda Chow, Emma Chin, Hayley Ng, Jade Young, Jessica Young, Julie Chin, Justine Young, Kim Foon, Rochelle Soo, Tory Yee showed glimpses of future ability. Thanks to Nat Foon for coaching.

MINIBALL

All teams in the intermediate, miniball and tiniball section enjoyed the competition during the WCSCC Queens Birthday Tournament. It was an opportunity to show the skills they had practiced during the training sessions on the court in a tournament situation. Well done to all the participants. There was great energy, enthusiasm, sportsmanship, fun and fantastic ball and shooting skills both on and off the court.

Intermediate Dragons Blue and Dragons Yellow played two games against WCS Saints and WCS Giants. Both teams played extremely well with a lot of enthusiasm and energy. Dragons Blue won both games - the second game against WCS Giants was close, going down to the final whistle. Dragons Yellow lost both their games but showed plenty of guts and potential against more experience players. Well done team!

Dragons Blue: Lisa Chin, Micah Lepaio, Fairen Lepaio, Matthew Ng, Michael Young, Kylie Ngan Kee, Matthew Wong, Byron Letoa

Dragons Yellow: Matthew Ngan, Jasmin Yee, Courtney Foon, Jared Fung, Jordan Lim, Rieon Young, Michael Chin, David Lee

Miniball Night Shadow: Andy Peng, Jessica Yung, Jessica Lowe, Katherine Chin, Timmy Young, Tim Kung, Kiki Kiriau and Coach Billy All played and shot well as a team. They won both games convincingly. The team played competitively with great sportsmanship.

11

Starlight: Jason Chin, Hana Wong, Lisa Zhou, Michail Lee, Samantha Fung, Michael Yung, Stacey Kung and Coach Stephen There were some brilliant goals scored by all team members. They won one game and lost the other. They were over the moon with their win after a first up loss. The team hopes Jason Chin recovers quickly from his tonsillitis so he can participate in the next tournament.

Mews: Scott Ngan, Charshea Lim, Hayley Yee, Justin Chow, Yvonne Lau, Rachael Chin, Charlotte Yee and Coach David Everyone was energetic, happy and enthusiastic. They won both games and towards the end of the tournament they started to work well as a team. Their zone defence was being used effectively.

Tiniball Dragons entered three teams. The teams played two games each, in a very even competition resulting in close scores. Well done teams! They were:

Super Tigers Jordon Ngan the Fantastic Bradley Chin the Brilliant Kristy Ngan the Courageous Michael Ngan Kee the Magnificent Euan Wong the Energetic Anthony Lowe the Amazing

Chicago Bulls Dangerous Daniel Kai Hard Head Hayden Yee Nimble Nicholas Young Courageous Kayla Kiriau Marvellous Megan Fung Shooter Shanee Kiriau Terrific Tony Zhou

Tweedy Birds Alex Peng the Awesome Attacker Nathan Blundell the Accurate 3 Point Shooter Nathan Kung the Brilliant Ball Dribbler Sarah Ngan Kee the Super Ball Handler Renee Yee the Great Defender Tyler Yee the Terrific Ball Dribbler

Thanks to the team mums: Kaye, Sharon and Bev for organising teams and washing team t-shirts. Thanks to Hayley and Emma for their help, in coaching the Tweedy Birds. Thanks to all the parents/supporters who attended; cheering and encouraging the young charges. Thanks to all the players who participated with great energy and enthusiasm who displayed fantastic ball skills and attitude on the court.

Good Luck to all teams participating in the Miniball Fun Day. Don’t forget the following date and more details will be available soon:

Dragons Womans 'A' basketball : A coaches' perspective, from the sideline and beyond...

Basketball has always been a strange game, just put the ball in the hoop and play some DEFENSE !!!!! The live and die motto of any coach who wants to win a game of basketball. I've always been an advocate of passion and desire, its not something that can be taught or learnt, its something that comes from the heart and soul of a human being. Rewind, back to the 5th of June 2000. Game one of the bitter rivals- Centre and Dragons. the match up that is and always will be the centerpiece of the tournament. Finals day..... 2 minutes to go ..... down by 2 ...... Time out...... This is why we play the game, for this moment in time that will never be forgotten, a memory and a chance to forge your own destiny.

We started with a close gut wrenching one point loss to Centre, with Ione showing her class around the hoop and Gina dominating with her slashing power drives and outside shooting, but we have to ask the question where was Nat (Foon that is). A few things didnt go our way but we would learn from this experience soon enough. With our two starting forwards Irene and Ione playing another tournament in Porirua we had to step up our play against Auckland, it was a showing of old and new, Anna playing like she was 20 again and Laura the baby of the team leading the way with her shooting and driving layups. Nat Tong decided to turn up half way through the game after representing for the regional Hutt Valley team. Suffice to say we won and did it in style. Semi-finals and we would play Auckland yet again.... with Jenny and Anna providing veteran experience on the defensive end ..... Nat and Nat the "firm" would propel this team into the finals on a convincing note. Kelly injured herself on another freak accident and this would be her last game of the tournament, not that she had prior arrangements at Eden for Mondays final either!!! Again Laura showed signs of her natural ability and talent which she will show for years to come at this level!!!

Finals day and we were again down on personnel ... Anna and Kelly would be absent for the game, but with Nat Foon finally returning to form and the irrepressible Nat Tong breaking ankles left right and "Centre" we would stay in touch. At the half we were down by two, with suspect calls from the referee's playing to the advantage of Centre we would slowly claw back from an 8 point deficit to 2 within the final minute.

We gave ourselves the opportunities and we never gave up, the sign of a true champion. The atmosphere in the final could be heard with each moan and groan of the crowd with every play meaning the difference....Outstanding defense on the Centre forwards by Ione and Irene who were for once under sized and the dynamic duo of Nat-Nat and Foon-Tang at the top of their games we would pull out a deserving one point win. To say that this was the most fulfilling moment as a coach is an understatement. This win was deserving of a team that played like a team. With every member contributing in their own special way and not giving in. It was a most enjoyable group of individuals to manage and support and regardless of whether we won or lost the game, we played hard and put our best effort forward, that is all you can ask as a coach- thanks guys.

In Other News

• Resignations; Farewells By now, some of you will probably have noticed that our Chairperson, Ms. Kar Yee Fransham has been conspicuously absent at sports events and social gatherings. Your most likely clue to her absence is the fact that your hearing has probably returned, and children are now much more safe while crossing roads. In addition, St John’s are now no longer required at social events. (also, mere males have also been able to remove their pacemakers now that she’s no longer striding Lambton Quay in itsy bitsy business skirts).

Seriously, Kar Yee decided that it was high time she get a job that kept pace with her lifestyle, so she went to Melbourne to try out Aussie blokes (us NZer’s are apparently not man enough for her – we lack the required “equipment”…a gold card). So all you single guys, we just lost a domina to

13

Australia (may God have mercy on them!). We wish Kar Yee all the best in her “endeavours”, and we’re sure she’ll return in a remake of a little known Bruce Lee film, “Return of the Hand”.

You can (reach out and) get in touch with Kar Yee at: [email protected], or [email protected]

In addition to Kar Yee’s recent resignation, our very own Newsletter Editor Roger has decided to call it “quits” as well, citing shoulder surgery rehabilitation due to too much time spent editing Dev’s articles, and also a longing to get more involved with his volleyball coaching (gives him an excuse to legitimately scream at people). Yeah, right.

Actually, his real reason was that the standard of suppers after meeting just weren’t up to scratch, and Jack’s office is too darn cold! (NOT)

However, he is still available for consultation (read: nosey) on anything and anyone, and will still be involved in club activities, including the South African Easter 2001 preparation. He should really develop a proper dribble (instead of “throw the ball and chase”) and a lefthand lay-up.

• Job Opportunity: Dragons Webmaster In order for Dragons to expand the way it involves itself in our local, yet global community, we would like to hear from people who would be interested in creating, and maintaining a Dragons web-presence.

Initally, the webpage will contain much the same information as the newsletter that you are now reading, however it is hoped that it will become the first stop for people wanting to know our calendar of events, a hub of connectivity, and another way for members to stay in touch.

What we require is for people who are interested in taking on this position to present a sample of their work, outlining the structure and how the site is navigated. We don’t need a site to be graphic intensive (eg. Flash/Shockwave etc), so the simpler the better. Navigational buttons are preferred over huge scrolling pages.
