He joined the Army in 1937, became an aviation cadet, and earned his wings and commission in 1938. In the early years of World War II, Tibbets was an outstanding B-17 pilot and squadron commander in Europe. He was chosen to be a test pilot for the B-29, then in development. In September 1944, Lt. Col. Tibbets was picked to organize and train a unit to deliver the atomic bomb. He was promoted to colonel in January 1945. In May 1945, Tibbets took his unit, the 509th Composite Group, to Tinian, from where it flew the atomic bomb missions against Japan in August. After the war, Tibbets stayed in the Air Force. One of his assignments was heading the bomber requirements branch at the Pentagon during the development of the B-47 jet bomber. He retired as a brigadier general in 1966. In civilian life, he rose to chairman of the board of Executive Jet Aviation in Columbus, Ohio, retiring from that post in 1986. At the dedication of the National Air and Space Museum’s Udvar- Hazy Center in December 2003, the 88-year-old Tibbets stood in front of the restored Enola Gay, shaking hands and receiving the high regard of visitors. RAF Football Association - E-Bulletin RAF FA CUP ‘THE KEITH CHRISTIE TROPHY’ AND RAF FA PLATE 19/20 UPDATE With the RAF Cup now in full swing, the second round produced some more exciting ties and saw some big names exit the competition. RAF Leeming’s away trip to Akrotiri was the eagerly anticipated tie of the round, however it proved to be a tough trip for the visitors as they were on the receiving end of a heavy 5-1 defeat. SAC Liam Thornton grabbed four of the goals, taking his overall tally to six and making him the current top scorer in the competition. RAF Brize Norton faced the long journey up to Lossiemouth and it proved to be successful as they ground out a 1-0 win with Sgt Dave Wanless scoring the all-important goal, Brize Norton will be hoping for a slightly shorter journey if they are drawn away in the next round. SAC Liam Wood scored his first two goals of the competition helping RAF Northolt to an away win at Wyton with RAF Coningsby also picking up a convincing away victory running out 4-0 winner against JFC Chicksands & RAF Henlow. RAF Honington who have a great history with the competition were knocked out at the hands of RAF Odiham thanks to a single goal from SAC Clarke Goulding. RAF FA E-Bulletin – RAF Cup Update Elsewhere, RAF Shawbury and RAF Marham both scored four goals each to take them through with victories over MOD St Athan and RAF Waddington respectively. RAF Boulmer also strolled through to the next round with an impressive 7-1 victory over RAF Cranwell. -

BRIGADIER GENERAL RANDALL K. "RANDY" BIGUM BRIGADIER GENERAL RANDALL K. "RANDY" BIGUM Retired Oct. 1, 2001. Brig. Gen. Randall K. "Randy" Bigum is director of requirements, Headquarters Air Combat Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va. As director, he is responsible for all functions relating to the acquisition of weapons systems for the combat air forces, to include new systems and modifications to existing systems. He manages the definition of operational requirements, the translation of requirements to systems capabilities and the subsequent operational evaluation of the new or modified systems. He also chairs the Combat Air Forces Requirements Oversight Council for modernization investment planning. He directs a staff of seven divisions, three special management offices and three operating locations, and he actively represents the warfighter in defining future requirements while supporting the acquisition of today's combat systems. The general was born in Lubbock, Texas. A graduate of Ohio State University, Columbus, with a bachelor of science degree in business, he entered the Air Force in 1973. He served as commander of the 53rd Tactical Fighter Squadron at Bitburg Air Base, Germany, the 18th Operations Group at Kadena Air Base, Japan, and the 4th Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, S.C. He has served at Headquarters Tactical Air Command and the Pentagon, and at U.S. European Command in Stuttgart- Vaihingen where he was executive officer to the deputy commander in chief. The general is a command pilot with more than 3,000 flight hours in fighter aircraft. He flew more than 320 combat hours in the F- 15C during Operation Desert Storm.
