President’s Message

Hey everyone, July is upon us, a time to celebrate with our families and friends the Independence of this great country we live in. What makes this country great for you? For me, I believe in embracing things that historically made a huge impact of the expansion of our wonderful nation, like the Model T for starters, the men and women who have fought, and continue to fight for this country.

There were some great points brought out during our club board meeting in June, they were regarding the participation of members in our club’s tours and events. It seems as it is always the same three or four cars making each tour. For those that are making each tour you are amazing, it’s troubling however to me that the club members who participate, have started to feel like it’s not worth having a club. I encourage everyone to reach out and say what is needed to get you out and about. Life can throw us for many loops, if we work together, I know we can get more cars out and about. Our club is worth fighting for, let’s do our part to keep it rolling.

Hoping everyone enjoys the Coronado Independence Day Parade who are participating in the event. Be safe and have a Great 4th of July, we will see you at the General Meeting on 13th of July.

Sunshine (and Showers) Report

Again, nothing has been reported and we hope all is well with everyone. We have learned that one of our club member, Nancy Barkley Nelson recently finished the Ultra Adventures 50k trail run at the Grand Canyon. That’s 31.77 miles. Nancy is an amazing women and she says she wants to run it again

Remember to call me at 949-492-4255 or email me at [email protected] when something happens, so I can send out cards or call. We care about all our members in the San Diego Model T Club. Judy Burrell

3 Ruckstell Review —July 2016 Alpine History Day Tour By Tony Bowker

Norm Kling is a member of the Alpine Historical Society and they have an annual event to which we were invited to display our Model Ts. It was not a long tour, we started in Santee and drove along Olde Hwy 80 to the Historical site, a distance of a mere 20 miles each way compensated by a long grade on the very quiet road. We had hoped for several more Ts but for this event there was just three, John Chapman in his Roadster, Bob Anderson in his 1913 Speedster and Tony in the Red 1914 Touring. Norm had brought his Roadster to the event, so there were four Ts parked along the road as an attraction, This year the event was a slightly less well attended compared to last year, as in place of the kids concert there was a demonstration of Civil War memorabilia and firearms. Kirby Pray showed up and he and John went off to investigate the proposed tour to the Railroad Museum in Campo.

When things began to quiet down after lunch, the three of us left for the great drive down the hill, I even used the Warford overdrive. John and Bob left us to head for home whle drove back to our starting place in Santee. Thanks again to Norm for inviting us to this interesting time in Alpine.

Potential Axle Failure By Tony Bowker

On the recent (Mau) Kingman tour, one car suffered a rear axle failure. On inspection, the passenger side axle had snapped just behind the driven gear. On closer inspection there was a groove in the axle just behind the gear where it then broke.

After a considerable discussion on the MTFCA forum, it was decided it was likely caused by the steel washer falling off the pins and rubbing on the axle, most likely when the original Babbitt washer failed. Today we recom- mend a brass washer to avoid this problem. While we are certain this groove was not caused recently, it was probably cut at some time in the past. Who knows all the damage that has been inflicted on our cars in the past 90 odd years? So, when inspecting the back axle of your Model T, check that there is no damage just behind the differential on both axles, because it can break at any time it wants to.

6 Ruckstell Review —July 2016 Cars in Film

Cars have been in movies almost as long as movies have been made and serve to add attitude and status to the characters in the film. Car scenes lend excitement and drama to settings. The American public has a particular connection with the automobile, and this translates to movies and TV shows that center on the characters with their cars. The shooting of a film centered on a specific car requires several identical cars for the shoot. In some series or films, several dozen cars may be required for one feature.

Hero Cars

Some movie cars are uniquely identified with the protagonists or the car as the star of the movies. These are known as a “hero cars.” Examples of Hero cars are: the Green Mustang from Bullitt, the Gran Torino from Starsky & Hutch, from Gone in 60 Seconds, the in The Dukes of Hazard, the Thunderbird from Thelma & Louise, and Bumblebee and Optimus Prime from Transformers. Hero cars driven by James Bond included the Aston Martin DBS from Goldfinger, the Lotus Esprit (that changed into a submarine) from The Spy Who Loved Me, the Land Rover Defender from SkyfaJl and the Aston Martin DB10 from Spectre. Any cars driven by Vin Diesel or Paul Walker in any of the Fast and Furious films are also “hero” cars.

Villain Cars

Cars that are the central character or the main ride of a “bad” character are referred to as “villain cars.” These include Christine from the film with same name, “The Car,” the Charger used to chase Steve McQueen in Bul/iff, and any cars of the villains in the Bond films. Chick Hicks from Cars and the majority of the cars from Mad Max: Fury Road are good examples of villain cars.

Stunt Cars

Films that feature cars that jump or crash require “stunt cars.” On the outside, stunt cars look like hero cars. Internally, they are “gutted.” The interior is removed or radically altered to accommodate the stunts by installing roll cages, special drive trains, and other devices for special effects.

Star Cars

When featuring a hero car, the car that is kept in the best shape for still shots and for simple moving scenes with no stunts is called the “star car.” These cars are kept in fairly pristine condition so promotions and later displays show the vehicle looking its best.

A representative selection of the Star Cars on display at the SDAM: 1958 Fury from Christine (1983) 1970 VW Beetle from 1966 Ford Thunderbird from Thelma & Louise (1991) 1991 Trans Am from Knight Rider K.I.T.T. 1959 Studebaker Champion “Bullet Nose” Police Car from Batman Forever (1995) 1975 Ford Gran Torino Starcky & Hutch TV series and Movie (2004)
