A la session d'aujourd'hui, apres avoir entendu l'avis des rnembres du Conseil General et obtenu leur consentement, j'ai accepts sa dcmission. Le motif do la dcmission du Pere Gaziello, c'est son etat de sante. Fin 1987, lors de la visite d'unc mission, it a contracts une malaria cerebrale et it est reste quatre jours dans le coma. Son co0ur en a ete affects. Lors d'un recent examen medical, apres une visite Bans une Province missionnaire, les docteurs lui ont conseills de ne plus entreprendre de longs et penibles voyages. A la lumiere do ces faits, j'ai decide, sur sa dernande, de Ic decharger de son office. La Congregation doit de la reconnaissance au Pere Gaziello polo- son excellent travail durant huit ans et demi. C.M. -4- Rorna, Lent 1989 To the Congregation My dear Confreres, May the grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ bi with us forevar! A few weeks ago in my Advent letter I wrote to you on the topic of our Vow of Poverty. Since that time the members of the General Council have devoted a number of sessions to reflecting on the sub- ject. We would like now to offer you the fruits of our reflection, along with some questions which should be faced and honestly answered by each one of us. We consider that the maintenance and practice of evangelical poverty in the Congregation is essential for our survival as a Com- munity in the Church, a conviction which Saint Vincent expressed frequently to us at the end of his life. During the weeks of Lent I ask each local community in the Con- gregation to hold at least one conference on the subject of evangeli- cal poverty as practised by us as individuals and as communities. Later, at your next Provincial Assembly consideration and reflec- tion can be given to the questions of evangelical poverty at a provin- cial level. The short document which the General Council now offers you will, / hope, be a help in your personal, community and provincial reflection on our practice of evangelical poverty. May the Spirit of God enlighten us about the means we should adopt to strengthen, or if need be, restore the dynamism that the practice of evangelical poverty gives to the life of a man who is intent on continuing the mission of Christ of proclaiming good news to the poor. RYBOLT, C.M. (A conference prepared for the participants in CIF, Centre International de Formation, held in Paris, France; revised and updated.) INTRODUCTION The purpose of this week of the program is to be faithful to paragraph 50 of the Constitutions, which instructs us about our Vincentian Family. 50. We should cherish devotion to Saint Vincent and to the canonized and beatified members of the Vincentian Family. We should constantly return to the heritage of our Founder, expressed in his writings and in the tradition of the Congregation, that we may learn to love what he loved and practice what he taught. As you can see, we are really interested in just the first sentence of this paragraph. Nevertheless it tells us a great deal. We could approach this subject hagiographically: that is, in the worst sense of the term, to look at these saints and blesseds as the models of every Vincentian virtue, searching their lives for examples of these, marveling at them, and drawing out lesson for our personal daily living. You are certainly free to do so, and during these hours together, I will display several items of interest which could be read, as well as a bibliography. On the other hand, I am going to approach the subject historically, particularly by giving the historical context in which these confreres of ours lived and worked.

In his shelf list of the Ethiopian manuscripts kept at the Ethi- opian archbishopric in Jerusalem,1 Ephraim Isaac makes the following re- marks in relation to the manuscript JE300E (MS 119 at the Ethiopian arch- bishopric in Jerusalem): This is the title given to the work which contains, beside other compo- site monastic works, a commentary to Song of Songs 1: 2߃14a (fols. 3a߃ 20a). This commentary is the work of Philo of Carpasia (Philon Philgos) (c. 400). I thank Prof. Sebastian Brock who helped to identify this work with the help of Rev. Roger Cowley.2 The commentary in- corporated into the catena of Procopius is published in PG KL. (In Lat- in, see Epiphanius of Salamis). As far as I know this is the only known Ms of this work in Geʞez.

The nineteenth century was in many ways the golden age of missionary activity in the Catholic Church. This was certainly true of the Congregation ofthe Mission. Although Vincent de Paul had hoped that his community would undertake missions "ad gentes," this never really happened in his lifetime. Only with the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773 did foreign missions begin to play an important role in Vincentian ministries and even then it was primarily in China. In the nineteenth century the missionary apostolate expanded rapidly and dramatically. One focus of Vincentian missionary activity was Ethio­ pia, and one of the early missionaries, notable for the hardships he endured, was Luigi Montuori. Montuori was born at Praiano, in the diocese of Amalfi, on 17 October 1798. He entered the Congregation of the Mission at Naples on 28 September 1816 and took his vows on 13 December 1818.

For the history of nursing this is an historical landmark, where, thanks to Florence Nightingale, the professional nursing was born. At the moment, the organization of health care and nursing of the Sardinian Piedmontese Army has not been the subject of extensive study. This report is meant to start the analysis of their commitment. Through analysis of primary historical sources, we would like to highlight the role of healthcare and nursing in the Sardinian-Piedmontese Army starting from 1855, during the Crimean War. We have analyzed the records stored in the archive of the Ispettorato Generale (part of the Ministry of War) in Turin and the reports by Army chief physician Dr. Comissetti, as well as the surveys in the archive of the Sisters of Charity at the convent of San Salvato in Turin, the letters of Florence Nightingale and the French doctors' testimo - nies. So we were able to shed light on the people involved in assistance and healthcare in the Sardinian -Piedmon - tese Army. A new, unprecedented historical research has shown the dedication and the daily work of male military personnel and religious during the Crimean War, a new aspect during this war that of what would later become the basis of the profession nursing Key words: Nursing History, Crimean War, Sardian-Piedmontese Army.
