  • Social Science Research on Chinese Organizations in the English Literature: a Survey
Social Science Research on Chinese Organizations in the English Literature: A Survey Xueguang Zhou and Wei Zhao Introduction: Intellectual Landscape in the Study of Chinese Organizations In this essay, we survey and assess the English literature of what we have loosely grouped under the umbrella of “social science research on Chinese organizations.” Let us first delineate the boundary of this literature. Most of what is being surveyed here are those studies carried out by social scientists, especially those in sociology, political science, economics, and management research, published in social science journals or by academic presses, and focused on Chinese organizations broadly defined—those analyses and discussions that have implications for the organizational aspects of Chinese society. We pay particular attention to the more recent research activities, especially those in the last two decades, partly because this is the period when social science disciplines have provided important theoretical models and analytical tools for understanding the organizational phenomena, and partly because the transformation of Chinese society in the last three decades has greatly stimulated social research in this area. Our survey is motivated by two general observations. First, formal organizations play a central role in the Chinese society. It is not exaggerating to say that contemporary China since 1949 has been an organizational society, where various aspects of political, economic, and social life have been organized by formal organizations, especially those of the state apparatus. Hence, the study of Chinese organizations provides a key to understanding different arenas of Chinese society. In the post-Mao era, the transformation of Chinese organizations has been at the center of the ongoing, fundamental institutional changes of Chinese society in the last three decades.

  • Zhang Ziyi and China's Celebrity–Philanthropy Scandals
Zhang Ziyi and China’s Celebrity–Philanthropy Scandals Elaine Jeffreys, University of Technology Sydney Zhang Ziyi is arguably China’s most famous female celebrity, being ranked after basketball player, Yao Ming, at number two on Forbes’s (mainland) China Celebrity List in 2009 and 2010 (‘2010 Forbes China Celebrity List’ 2010).1 Forbes issued its inaugural list of China’s top 100 power-ranking celebrities in 2004, demonstrating the growing importance of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in global cultural markets. As with the US list, China’s celebrities are ranked by combining income from salaries and endorsements with the number of times they appear in various media formats (Jeffreys & Edwards 2010: 2). Zhang Ziyi rose to international fame via her starring role in Ang Lee’s martial arts movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). A global cinematic phenomenon in 2000 and 2001, Crouching Tiger earned more than US$200 million worldwide, becoming the most commercially successful foreign-language film in US history and the first Chinese-language film to find a broad American audience (Klein 2004: 18). Since then, Zhang has gone on to enjoy critical acclaim for her starring roles in Hollywood films, such as Memoirs of a Geisha (dir. Rob Marshall 2005), and in Chinese-language blockbusters, such as Hero (dir. Zhang Yimou 2002) and House of Flying Daggers (dir. Zhang Yimou 2004). Voted as one of the ‘most beautiful people in the world’ by many fashion and celebrity magazines, she has appeared as the ‘face’ of 1 Forbes extended its China list in 2010 to include celebrities from Taiwan and Hong Kong, as well as mainland China.

UA: 165/16 Index: ASA 17/4448/2016 China Date: 14 July 2016 URGENT ACTION CHINESE LAWYER DETAINED FOR DEFENDING CLIENT Ren Quanniu, lawyer for legal assistant Zhao Wei, was detained on 9 July on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” after he expressed concerns about his client and asking for an investigation into her condition while she was detained. He is at risk of torture and other ill-treatment. Ren Quanniu, the lawyer who defended Zhao Wei, was criminally detained on 9 July on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” a catch-all charge often used to detain activists in China. Zhao Wei, a legal assistant of lawyer Li Heping (also detained) was released on bail, according to a 7 July posting on the official social media account of the Tianjin Public Security Bureau. The Zhengzhou Public Security Bureau on 8 July announced on their official Weibo account that they had taken Ren Quanniu into custody, and that on 9 July, he confessed that he fabricated rumours that Zhao Wei had been sexually harassed in detention. Ren Quanniu met with his lawyers in Zhengzhou City No. 3 Detention Centre on 11 July. According to them, he is in good spirits and denied that he had confessed to the alleged crime. He maintained his innocence and asserted that all the actions he had taken while carrying out his professional duties as defence lawyer for Zhao Wei were completely lawful. Ren Quanniu’s wife, Hu Youling, was on the evening of 13 July taken away by three police officers for questioning, and released the same day.
