Dear Editor: I was in Melville May 25 and 26 to attend the MCS Class of 78 Reunion. As former class president and part of the organizing committee, I have to say the hometown feeling was alive and well. We held events at the Legion Hall lounge on Fri- day and the Saturday at the golf course. The service from both facilities was top shelf. Personally knowing Greg Sastaunik and meeting his wife, Julie, those two did an unbelievable job taking care our needs on the Saturday. I was impressed with Mayor Walter Streelasky and his wife making time from their busy schedule that evening to say a few words. Melville, you are lucky to have such a dedicated leader at the helm. I also received a private tour of the Horizon Credit Union Centre from Lenny Wassill. Wow. I was blown away. What a gem. As well, we had tour of MCS and the school is still impressive after almost 50 years. Not being back since 2008 for the Millionaires re- union, I was truly impressed how the city is looking. When that milestone lies behind us, it becomes a way to measure the dreams we had, against the re- alities that we’ve grown in our lives. But when we are there — standing at that mile- stone — high school graduation marks the moment where we step out of “all we’ve ever known” into what could be. This week, several of the students graduating from Balcarres Community School this year, sat down to talk about what being part of this school community has brought to their lives. Many of the students who took part in this con- versation, say that Balcarres Community School pro- vided them an opportunity to grow up together. “A lot of us started school together” says Morgan Bray. “We hung out after school and played sports together, so we know each other. We don’t just think of ourselves as classmates, we have family connec- tions.” Those close bonds make the daily business of going to school a much more pleasant task. “Know- ing each other that well, makes things easier,” says Logan Betham. “It makes it more comfortable to be in class together.” %DOFDUUHVJUDGXDWHV/RJDQ%HWKDP0DKLNDQ:DSHPRRVH/HYL Carissa Esplin suggests that being part of a class /DUJH -DVRQ 0DL DQG (WKDQ 6WRQHFKLOG KDG WKH RSSRUWXQLW\ WR &KHOVHD*RRGZLOODQG0DFNHQ]LH'HVQRPLHZLWKWKHLUFKLOG$QQD that is growing together means students are more JURZXSWRJHWKHULQDVXSSRUWLYHVFKRROHQYLURQPHQW DSSUHFLDWHWKHHQFRXUDJHPHQWRIWKHLUKLJKVFKRROWHDFKHUV likely to learn the same way. “Smaller classes allow people.
