s I type this in my chilly office, I’m very aware that winter has arrived. The Register’s Golden anniversary year draws to a close, but it’s been a great A12 months packed with activities and events to mark the occasion. The North West Region put on a fantastic stand at Event City, showcasing everything the Wolseley Register has to be proud of – an enviable selection of cars (including ‘Best Pre-1950 ’ of the Show!) The team spirit and camaraderie amongst the members was also clear to see.

We have just returned from an excellent Show at the NEC. By working with the / Six-Eighty Club on the adjacent stand, we had an impressive display and spoke to numerous Wolseley enthusiasts over the weekend. A report will appear in the Jan/Feb magazine as the deadlines were too tight to turn Deadline around for this issue. for next Issue I wish you all a safe and peaceful 2 Jan 2015 Christmas and look forward to maintaining our momentum in 2015.

Unfortunately my wife took ill and was in hospital so Michael not only received the bonnet from his friend, but then delivered it to my house. Although I have no immediate need for a bonnet it will be a useful spare in case of any future mishaps.

Parts for these cars are extremely rare as any one trying to locate items will know only too well. This could easily have gone to the scrap yard but for Michael’s dedication to the Wolseley marque.

Wolseley need members like Michael for its continued success.

9 Wolseley Bake Off Amy Egan [6547]

Macmillan coffee morning was incorporated into our A committee meeting on 27 September. A wonderful selection of cakes and biscuits donated by committee members and their families raised a total of £41.50.

Long Service award to Swiss member Martin Stöckli [2781] President of the Austin-Morris-Wolseley Friends Switzerland

was very surprised to receive a long service badge in recognition for 25 years’ membership. It is incredible how time flies. I would like to say thank I you to all who have supported me and to all who will support me so that I can run my hobby.

Even though I am in Switzerland, I run a small club called Austin-Morris- Wolseley Friends Switzerland (www.amwf.ch). There are approximately 180 members with about 25 Wolseleys among others. We follow the action amongst UK enthusiasts, and most of us have visited the country in which our cars were born. [Pictured below: two Wolseleys from Martin’s collection]

We would like to do more together with the UK enthusiasts, but the distance is really very great. At least I could promise moral support alongside the membership fee. Whenever a Wolseley Register member visits Switzerland, I will happily give any information or support I can, and of course you are very welcome any time in any of our events.

Happy motoring and all the best for the next 25 years, hopefully!

10 Another Super Six back on the road Robert Butler [6871]

urther to Bob Leyland’s excellent online and Wolseley World articles on 16hp Super Sixes, I am sure this will be of interest to Bob and other Fmembers and Super Six owners. Here are some photos of my Series II Super Six Sixteen (EG 3798), recently re-enrolled on the Wolseley Register.

This Super Six has a slightly later 18hp engine fitted, date unknown. The chassis number is 216/2529 and engine number is 2531 originally. The car was registered in 1937, and from the dealer’s plate attached to the lower dash, retailed by Reed’s Garages in Peterborough.

An old-type window transfer depicts the Isle of Man emblem, crown, and coat of arms. The car has its original leather, carpets, door trims, and headlining; the rear seatback and base are ‘signed off’, in chalk, by the factory upholsterers!

EG 3798 has been out on the road briefly this year after a long rest. We hope to make a few mechanical improvements to the engine and venture further afield in the New Year!

12 The Wolseley All-Weather Road Map Mike Stanley [1234]

have recently come across this leaflet, advertising the sort of I thing available to H V Morton for his travels. It is claimed that the map is resistant not only to ‘normal’ handling but will withstand being dropped into oil or petrol spillages on the garage floor, and accidental contact with pipe ash and burgundy!

Has anyone come across any surviving maps? I’ve not seen any, and if they were as indestructible as claimed, why not?!

SOUTH WEST REPORT Geoff Bennett [923]

e were very pleased to have two splendid cars representing the Wolseley Register at the Classic Vehicle Restoration Show in Shepton WMallet, Somerset on the weekend of 1-2 November. Firstly we had a Baby X Type, not a small Jaguar but a Wolseley Baby X Type 5hp Two Seater Phaeton, built in 1905. One of only two known survivors described in The Register’s List of Recorded Vehicles as the “50 infamous Baby cars for export to India” (the other is in pieces awaiting restoration and was recently rediscovered by Norman Painting). This car belongs to Frank Loft, owner and Curator of the Moreton- hampstead Motor Museum in Devon. The Phaeton won the award of ‘Most Interesting Car in the Show’ and certainly attracted the interest of everyone who came anywhere near our stand.

In contrast, the second Wolseley represented one of the most common of the marque – a 1964 Mk III Wolseley 1500. Almost 101,000 1500s were built between 1957 and 1965; more than any other Wolseley model. This car had been recently acquired by its present owner, Stephen Wood, having undergone a partial restoration involving a re-spray and some new chrome work. The 1500 provides reliable regular Classic transport for new Register-member Stephen, but is in need of some under-bonnet refurbishment, involving checking the clutch, gearbox and engine bearings. All this promises to keep Stephen busy over the winter.

29 Our third ‘exhibit’ was Jenny Ryder’s splendid Regalia stand. Beautifully presented as always and providing the Register with much- needed revenue. Jenny manages to maintain a smiling presence throughout what can be quite an arduous weekend. Thanks Jenny, we all love you!

The Register has been granted space for four cars at the 2015 Bristol Classic Car Show. One is booked already, but another three volunteers would be most welcome. Please contact Geoff Bennett (contact details page 8). For more on what’s involved, view ‘Exhibitor Info’ at www.bristolclassiccarshow.co.uk

I wish to thank Graham Ryder for setting up most of our stand and bringing the Regalia, tables, flag and survival kit (tea, coffee, biscuits etc). Thanks to the exhibitors for bringing their cars, and thanks to the organisers for inviting us!

MIDLANDS REGION Graham Ryder [4746]

hree very different Wolseleys spanning three decades were Texhibited on the Midlands Region club stand at the popular Stoneleigh Restoration Show on 26 October.

The oldest exhibit was this recently- acquired 14/60, which had been repatriated from Ireland and reassigned its original registration. During the Show, further investigation revealed that the car was previously owned by

30 none other than our National Chairman, Geoff Craggs – evidenced by a long-lost glasses case discovered in the glovebox!

Stan Hogg is the proud owner of his 1958 Champagne Beige 15/50. Having recently completed its 17-year restoration, the car is now an immaculate example of the model. Stan had recently clocked-up 25 years’ membership of the Register and is looking forward to attending more events now his car is back on the road.

The youngest exhibit was a 1963 1500 Mk III which has been under restoration for the last four years by Midlands Chairman Graham Ryder. Now sporting two-tone livery of Birch Grey and Damask Red, the 1500 is still having finishing touches applied. The new front disc brakes generated many comments on being exposed for viewing.

Register Members travelled from all directions to the Show, some who attend regularly from as far as Scotland and Ireland. Members of the public and friends from other car clubs were all welcomed to the stand. Regalia sales boosted club funds and technical and membership queries were answered.

Meanwhile, Midlands members John O’Callaghan and Peter Wheeler exhibited their Wolseley 6/80 and Morris Six respectively on the neighbouring West Midlands Classic Car Club stand [pictured below].

The Restoration Show offered a wide range of exhibits as well as the usual copious auto- jumble. Thanks to all the exhibitors and visiting members who supported the Midlands stand.

Several Wolseleys were exhibited at the Bonded Warehouse Open Weekend in Stourbridge on 18-19 October.

SOUTH EAST REGION Alan Simmonds [571]

ur South East Annual Rally was held on 21 September in Kent. Weren’t we lucky? Wonderful weather, a fabulous venue, a good turnout from Oour members and a jolly and friendly day for us all. Hever Castle and gardens are truly breathtaking. We even had Dave Allen present, who came with Nyria Atkinson. All 12 Wolseleys were well-presented and made an impressive line- up. Even two members whose Wolseley refused to start on the day still supported the event.

32 Our judges struggled to select three concours award winners – how do you compare cars of different ages and from mainly original to fully restored? The same old dilemma! It was felt that these three Wolseleys were presented at their very best in their individual circumstances. First place was awarded to Andrew Bull’s 1500; Second to Charlie East’s 15/50, and Third to Robin Sutton’s Wasp.

Alan presented the awards, thanked everyone for coming and thanked those who organised the rally. The day passed much too quickly and it was soon time to leave. [All photographs courtesy Andrew Bull].

The existing committee was re-elected at the South East AGM in November, with the exception of John and Derek Hollington who both stood down. So the committee for 2015 is: Secretary: Alan Simmonds, Treasurer: Jim Beaumont, Committee members are Andy Bradley, Nelson Ferriera, Geoff Hunt, Stuart McCallum and Dave Allen. The posts of Chairman and SE Rep are vacant.

LOCAL MEETINGS: yy Held on the second Monday from 8pm at the Kingswood Arms in Kingswood village. Alan Simmonds: [email protected] / 020 8394 0700 yy Sunday 7 December: We hope to welcome as many as possible once more at the Kingswood Arms for our Christmas Lunch, 12.30 for 1pm.

33 NORTH WEST REGION Mike Stanley [1234]

here has been much activity by many of our members across our region. The nationwide Heritage weekend on 13-14 September saw members Tsupporting and participating in a wide variety of events. A couple of us were able to respond to an SOS from East Lancs Railway on the Saturday, following the late withdrawal of a previously booked-in group. This proved worthwhile as it allowed us access to the Transport Museum, as well as rides on vintage buses and the railway.

On the Sunday a number of us took part in The East Lancs Heritage Run. Starting from the Textile Museum at Helmshore [pictured], an interesting route took us via Haworth Art Gallery in Accrington and the museum in Rawtenstall to Burnley for Towneley Hall and Queen Street Mill. There was plenty to see at each location, and everyone enjoyed the day.

The ‘high spot’ of the period was our attendance at the Classic Car Show at Event City in Manchester, where we again put on an eye-catching stand. To celebrate The Register’s 50 years, Peter had constructed an even bigger back-drop this year. We were pleased that Geoff and Betty were able to join in our celebrations, with their well- travelled Six-Ninety part of our excellent line-up of 10 different models. All of the cars created a great deal of interest for the many visitors to the stand. Particularly catching the attention of the judges was Roy’s 12/48 Coupe, which won the award for ‘Best Pre- 1950 Car’ [pictured left].

While the organisers chose not to make awards for club stands this year (only notified once the show was in progress!) our efforts were certainly appreciated, and the following appeared in Classic Car Weekly’s write-up of the event: “Buoyant from winning the CCW award with a seaside-themed stand at last year’s show, the Wolseley Register’s members celebrated it’s 50th anniversary

34 with an equally lavish display at this year’s show. The Register’s collection of cars, including the 25hp Drop-head owned by Lord Nuffield was framed by a wooden 50th anniversary display, complete with lighting, which took Peter Cope, North West Events Manager, six weeks to make.”

The Regalia part of the display, brought along by the Ryder family, was also busy with steady sales. On the Sunday afternoon things were ‘topped off’ when a celebratory cake was cut into and ‘bubbly’ opened to toast the Register’s anniversary and continued future success.

The ‘Morton’ effort has seen the completion of all the sections in our area. While many of these have been duplicated by members taking up the challenge, there was an enjoyable ‘get-together at the end of September based at Haltwhistle to explore the Hadrian’s Wall section.

The North West Christmas meal will again be held at the Ribchester Arms, and will be on Saturday 6 December meeting at 1pm for the meal at 1.30pm. Menu details are available from, and bookings should be made to Colin (email [email protected] or call 01254 246965).

35 SOUTH & WEST WALES REGION Mansel Lovering [6277]

he Dynevor Park Show held on the last days of September were the best yet, with a great influx of cars, vans, tractors, coaches and autojumble. TThe National Trust received large numbers of tourists, visitors and exhibitors on a weekend of fine weather. Although talk on the day suggested that this may be the last show on the site, its success gave hope to the organiser and all wish it to go on for many years to come. With Tredegar now ceased it is anticipated that the Dynevor Show will grow next season. As for Mansel, well he got there, although a bad fall as he set off made for a very painful journey.

The following weekend was Llanelli Steam Club’s show at Pembrey – another great rally. Mansel’s Wolseley 1300, normally the only one on showgrounds of its colour, kind and marque, sadly stayed in the garage. Falls seem to follow the Lovering family, as Valmai has now a shoulder broken in two places.

We will be back next year with news of more Wolseley wanderings! Thank goodness the family will have the H V Morton runs to keep them talking about during the winter months.

SCOTTISH REGION Dick Peters [3566]

e had our AGM at Gartcosh Works Social Club on 26 October. Twelve members were in attendance, and the usual topics were addressed. We Wreflected on a good year for our Group – in particular, our attendance at Glamis was adjudged to have been a roaring success. To no-one’s surprise, the Committee was re-elected with no opposition, and attention was turned to the coming season (2015), which marks the 25th anniversary of our Group’s formation.

It was agreed that, once again, we should look at doing something a bit special to celebrate this most auspicious occasion. A couple of venues are being investigated, with the emphasis being on identifying someplace where there is something for all the family. Joe Kelly, our redoubtable fundraising champion, is already working on making next year’s Drive It Day outing bigger and better, and is organising a classic car boot sale in September, which, once again, will have the aim of raising funds for just causes.

Finally, Joe Kelly would remind everyone of his regular classic monthly evening gathering at Gartcosh Social Club (G69 8AS) on the third Thursday of each month, commencing at 7.30pm. Joe’s contact details are 07721 875095 / [email protected].

e regret that there will not be a regional newsletter before Christmas as initially intended. Chris Cowell has not been well recently, sampling Wthe hospitality in no less than three hospitals in as many weeks – however, happily I can tell you he is now back at home and recovering.

It is therefore important that we inform you of the Region’s Christmas dinner arrangements and hopefully you can join us at one or both venues. The York Group Dinner will be held on Tuesday 9 December at the Black A Moor Inn near Ripon whilst the Lincoln Group will be held at The Woodcocks, Burton Water on Wednesday 17 December. Menus and booking details are available from Peter Seaword (York) 0113 2623610 and Stuart Nell (Lincoln) 01949 844870.

NORTH EAST REGION – News from the south Stuart Nell [743] and Nev Holmes [6290]

hree ‘teams’ entered The Haunted Lincolnshire Run on 7 September organised by the Mablethorpe & District Motor Club. The run started Tat The Brackenbury Arms near Louth and took entrants for a leisurely meander over some delightful roads in Lincolnshire.

We passed sites haunted by ghostly apparitions ranging from the dragon of Castle Carlton dating from the 12th century to a ghostly experience at Skegness railway station in 1978. Quite a few of the hauntings dated back to WWII when airmen were killed in crashed aircraft near to aerodromes. Passing by the remains of these old airfields made one aware of how much of Lincolnshire was given over to these bomber stations.

The cars entered ranged from the classic Wolseleys, Triumphs, MGs and Austin Healeys to the prosaic in the forms of a Ford Focus and Fiat Punto. The cars were set off at one-minute intervals in order of age. Being the oldest there (the car not the driver!) Nev and Helen Holmes were first away. Lynn and Stephen Rowitt shortly followed their Hornet. Stuart Nell and Stephen Betteridge were 7th away in the 6/110, having to get past a , Morris Oxford and MGB to catch up with the other Wolseleys. Stuart even managed to get in front of the Austin Healey 100/6 which began in second position.

After the half-way stop at the Bubble Car Museum, participants headed towards Lincoln and along the glorious road following the top of the Lincoln ridge, with views over the Trent valley. Ultimately the route looped back to finish at Welton Golf Club. The 126-mile route took the cars through some delightful Lincolnshire countryside and the day was enjoyed by all.

37 Pictured is Stuart Ingamell’s recent purchase in the form of an immaculate 1500 Mk I, amongst fellow Wolseleys at September ‘Noggin and Natter’ meeting. The next will be at The Woodcocks, Burton Water on Monday 8 December. Contact Stuart Nell 01949 844870 or Nev Holmes 01522 703454 for details.

A very enjoyable lunch meeting took place at The Welby Arms at Allington near Grantham on 22 October. Roy Carrier brought his beautiful pre-war Riley Kestral. Due to the fact that his Wolseley decided not to start, Stuart Nell was forced to use his Alvis 3 litre. Wolseleys present were Brian and Margaret Huskinson’s 18/85S and Ron Wood’s 6/80.

EAST ANGLIA REGION Chris Arnold [6441]

Local members continue to meet at the Oliver Twist pub in Guyhirn (PE13 4EA) from 8pm on the second Tuesday of the month. For details please contact Chris [page 8]. It looks as though our Christmas dinner on 9 December will be the East Anglia area’s biggest event yet. We will be discussing ideas for activities in 2015, so if you are unable to attend please send your suggestions.
